Late Night Wars - Conan's last Tonight Show was TONIGHT a long time ago

Lead-ins matter. A lot. Want proof? Look at Jimmy Fallon's numbers following Conan's last show.

Jay Leno was a poor poor poor lead-in for Conan. After his petty 5 million viewers drops off after the news, Conan had very view people left to peek into his show.

The advantage of a 11:00 show on FOX is enormous, because as all the other networks are airing news, FOX will be airing late night already. FOX not only has its shows providing in-direct lead-ins to Conan, all the other network shows will provide direct lead-ins to it as well.

For anyone who wants it...

There's a site out there called TVTunes that has themesongs to pretty much every TV show ever.

They have Conan's Late show (but the Tonight show version that they used for 7 months) theme with direct audio w/o Andy or the crowd.

http://www.televisiontunes.com/Tonight_Show_-_Conan_O_Brien.html

They also have a rip of the end of the show song from the 2nd last ep:

And of course this site doesn't have the Jimmy Fallon song. :(

Because what primetime needs right now is another show about lawyers.

Can you really make this point anymore? I mean, primetime used to be all doctors, cops, and lawyers, but it certainly seems to me like it's not so much lawyers anymore.

head swap and the thank you notes can actually be really, really funny

if only jimmy could work out his monologue delivery :(

Winfrey: Have you talked to Conan in person?
Leno: I haven’t talked to him through all this. No. I haven’t.
Winfrey: Did you want to pick up the phone?
Leno: Yeah, but it didn’t seem appropriate.
Winfrey: Why?
Leno: I don’t know. I think it — let things cool down and maybe we’ll talk, you know.
Winfrey: Were any of the things that he said about you hurtful?
Leno: No. They were jokes. And that’s okay. I mean –
Winfrey: So jokes don’t hurt you.
Leno: It’s what we do, you know? You can’t — it’s like being a fighter and say when you got punched in the head, did it hurt? Well, yeah. But you’re a fighter. That’s what you do.

I am going to watch the first episode of the Tonight Show with Leno returning. Just to see how it goes. A part of me is wondering if any "Team Coco" fans will be in the audience to boo Jay. Not saying I approve of this, but I think it will be an interesting show to watch.

As for Conan, I hope he does go to FOX and I hope his show is at midnight actually. I personaly feel that his material is just better suited for a later timeslot. I could be wrong though. Either way, I hope Conan finds success at a new gig. He deserves it.

If Conan starts any later than 11pm his lead-ins would be reruns of Seinfeld and The Office. I can't imagine that's a recipe for success.

That's his most glaring problem to me. I don't watch many late night shows, but it's the first thing I see and it's awkward for me, as a viewer. After that, it's mostly gravy. One he sits down, he's pretty funny. The skits are usually good.

The show is taped anyway, so they can remove those people.

It might be different from where I am, but my FOX stations has news from 10-12. I just assumed he would be following the news like Leno does for the Tonight Show. But maybe that isn't the case.

I remember some Kuchinich fans booing/making a scene when Bill Maher was a guest. They weren't booing him, they were booing the fact that NBC or it might have been MSNBC was refusing to allow Kuchinich to particpiate in a debate they were airing.

You are right though, they could remove the people. But the Tonight Show has been interupted before. Just wanted to point that out.

Yep.

"Let things cool off for a bit."

Is he seriously? Carson and Letterman hasn't spoken to Leno since 1993. I don't think Conan will ever want to speak with Leno.

it may be different with Conan. He may be willing to forgive, or rather place more of the blame upon NBC and their decision.

Please note: I'm not trying to defend Leno or anything. Just pointing out that people do have different reactions and Conan may not harbor a grudge against Leno. Or if he does, he might get over it.

Of course I could totally be in the wrong.

This is probably an unpopular opinion, but I think NBC is probably more to blame here than Leno, especially when you go back to the original decision to force Leno to 'retire.' Even looking at that video of Leno where he claims he doesn't want it to turn into something ugly you can tell he wasn't even remotely happy, and I don't really blame him. I also doubt he was aiming to receive all this bad press, but any dumbass should have been able to see it coming (and he doesn't appear to be a dumbass).

Basically, I think they were both fucked over, and this series of events doesn't really benefit anyone in particular. The fact that Leno is an unfunny slimeball in general makes him an easy target for ire, though.

I wouldn't be surprised if Conan sees it that way. His anger seems to have been mostly directed at NBC, not Leno, and I can't really see why he would aim it at his bosses instead of his 'coworker' if that wasn't who he was really angry at.

Pretty much, though to be fair, Leno had FIVE years to find another job until his contract would run out.

I don't understand the "honorable" motion of leaving Jay Leno's show and NBC alone. I would love nothing more than Team Coco keeping up the fight and more importantly the media attention as NBC keeps attempting to do cleanup. The fact of the matter is that no matter what they can/will be edited out from anything they do during the show UNLESS Jay has a nice guy answer to the problem.

They need to keep up online chatter and creative postings. It will keep the new percentage of Conan sympathizers as well as general interest in the Conan property.

At this point, I'm just waiting for 30 Rock to reference this situation. They've always been pretty current and hilarious with this kind of stuff, especially with NBC or GE gaffes. I feel like it's only a matter of time before Liz or Jack Donaghy mention it or, better yet, a guest appearance by Coco. He hasn't been on the show since he left New York, and it'd be nice to see him on something.

He had offers from pretty much all the major networks(CBS Excluded). NBC wanted him to do a Top Gear US, Daytime show, etc. I thought the only restriction was he wouldn't be able to be on for a year if it was another station.

NBC panicked and gave him a deal none of the hosts would honestly refuse. A chance at a talk show during primetime hours. None of the others could have offered that

They couldn't and wouldn't have offered it because it would, and did, flop.

NBC wouldn't let him out of his contract. After the end of the tonight show he couldn't start a new show for 2 years.

Jay Leno is gonna be headlining the White House Correspondents Dinner

Man that part is going to be so boring.

"Did you hear about this? Apparently Obama's approval rating went up by 2% last week. Yeah if a candid video of him playing with his dog and daughters get him 2% Bill should have continued playing with his dogs. Hey Hey! ... Usually this is the part where people applauds and Keven laughs uncontrollably, but you know!"

Leno fucked more people than just Conan and his crew. He fucked everyone who had a TV show on NBC at 10. Now, knowing the network, those shows would've probably been canned anyway due to ratings, but he's still directly responsible for putting hundreds of people out of work. Fuck Leno.
