If you're being forced to quit The Tonight Show, and you're given a FREAKIN' 4-5 YEAR HEADSTART to look for another place to work, it just shows how selfish Leno is and how lacking in talent he is that he didn't seem to see ANY alternative to working late night at NBC. Seriously? No other network offered? And seriously? You're that greedy that you can't be paid less to do stand-up or a scripted show or a film or anything?
And I don't get why he acted like he was "retiring" (I'm pretty sure he SAID he was retiring too) when that is the opposite of the truth. Everything about him seems greedy, lazy and ersatz.
I don't really get the Leno hate in this thread. From all accounts he loved doing the Tonight show and NBC kind of forced him out. They gave him the prime time show to pacify him (after offering him a chance to launch Top Gear USA). He chose not to do TOp Gear because he didn't want to live up to Jeremy and the gang on the UK version. If you're doing what you love, why would you not want to go back? To me, both Leno and Conan got screwed. I don't see any reason to lay blame on Leno. If he wants to go back to the old job that he loved, more power to him. NBC should have just stayed out of it. It was Leno's show and just like Carson, should have been able to end it on his terms.
Also, you say Jay is selfish. Why did Conan sign the contract that helped push Leno out? Why couldn't CONAN see alternative to working late night at NBC? If Leno's a dick for trying to get his old job back, Conan is just as guilty for doing (however small) his part to get Leno out in the first place. Again, I don't think the blame lies with either of these guys. They're both entertaining, and are both trying to get a job they love. In the end some talented guy is going to get the NBC axe.
Ideal solution for me would be Leno deciding to give Top Gear USA a try and Conan staying where he is. Leno has a completely rational reason for not wanting to do it, but I still think it would be great.
