Late Night Wars - Conan's last Tonight Show was TONIGHT a long time ago

So what ironic excuse is NBC going to use if Letterman beats Leno?

"He needs to find his footing, give him time."

"We're in it for the long haul."

"We have to be patient, we have no doubt Leno will be successful in the future."

Mr. O'Brien's guests that evening also included the deputy director of New York's wastewater collection bureau, the editor of the NBC inter-office newsletter and a man who could eat oranges without getting any juice on his shirt (although he failed to do so on camera). Inexplicably, all the guests were introduced at the same time. Mr. O'Brien then asked each, in turn, his favorite color. To every answer, he snorted that the chosen color was "for girls."

:lol :lol :lol

That bit is just fantastic.

Sweet, just saw that Dick "Dick" Ebersol is going to be on Colbert next week

Oh my God, he is walking into the trap of all traps. Why the fuck did he agree to this?

I mean, I am going to enjoy Colbert picking apart his carcass, but man, he publicly insulted a personal friend of Colbert. This is going to be brutal and awesome. Probably uncomfortable as well.

So Jay has Kimmel on and now Dick goes on Colbert? NBC must be generating ratings for Conan so that he can go elsewhere and have an incredibly profitable show.

Yeah, I wonder if that was talked about at all. I mean Conan used to only do 4 nights a week anyway, and Carson regularly had guest hosts during his run. Maybe they could have even expanded to Sunday and have Jay take that too.

Leno would never go for that. He's a workaholic.

And someone posted a Stern clip earlier where Rosie O'Donnell was talking about how he was offered to guest host the Tonight Show once a week back when Leno took over, and Leno refused because he doesn't like to take days off.

As much as my hate for Leno has grown I can't really blame him for that. If it was my show I would have done the same thing. Starting out he had to really establish himself and if his guest host was getting better ratings than him he could have been screwed. Not that he ever allowed guest hosts once he was established which is his own insecurity/work ethic/whatever, but still I can't blame him for wanting to go solo at the beginning.

Same. Still, it's great hearing more hatred for the man.

Yeah I agree. Plus, in my mind chosing between Leno or Rosie is like chosing between having my left ball cut off or my right ball cut off.

A little unrelated, but I was reading one of these "downfall of NBC" links and started thinking about which networks have really upped their game. NBC had Friends, Seinfeld, Frasier, all these hit shows. Now all the biggest shows are on cable, like Showtime, HBO, and AMC.

I was trying to remember which network had what, when I read on the wikipedia link for AMC that they have The Walking Dead in production! Holy shit! I google it, and this is the first article:

What's your undead TV/movie/book/comics genre of choice? If it's vampires, you have to be feeling pretty well-served right now, what with Twilight and True Blood and all. If it's zombies, well, be patient. A new George Romero zombie flick is on the way, as is the big-screen comedy Zombieland. And just today it was announced that AMC has won a bidding war to make writer Robert Kirkman's cult comic book series The Walking Dead into a TV series, produced by Frank Darabont (who will also write and direct) and genre specialist Gale Anne Hurd. Darabont has been driving this project for years, and at one time had planned to make the series at NBC. But it ought to be a better fit on cable, especially on a channel that's earning a reputation for smart, challenging fare. Now if only Darabont can show a few zombies cooking meth at an ad agency in the early '60s, it could be crossover time!

Oh NBC, I am disappoint.

Was announced shortly after Ebersol gave all sorts of praise to Colbert for shining a spotlight on the Olympic skating team. Ebersol is the president of NBC Sports, and all that. So be warned, might be that the only reason the guy is appearing is to talk about Olympics/skating, and as much as Colbert is a friend of Conan's, I'm not sure if NBC's PR-people will let Ebersol be on the show if Colbert is out for Ebersol's blood.

Its better that its on amc. They have mad men and breaking bad so they can certainly do drama. On cable you go farther and if it was on nbc if it wasnt a hit right away it would get cancelled. I just started reading the comic so dont spoil anything but i like mm and bb and the idea of walking dead so i think it will be good

I don't even watch network shows on TV anymore, well except for 24 but that's just a guilty pleasure. The only real good TV for me recently has been on cable stations. HBO has an amazing line up of things coming. The networks just don't interest me.

Ultimately it's better for the show (and us, the viewers), but if I were at NBC I would jump at the chance to do a show like that, because I think it has a chance to be a hit. It's like Seinfeld, I don't think they would make that today. "You want to do an episode where everyone makes a bet to stop masturbating? You want to kill the fiancée who is a major supporting character and have it be a joke?" They'd say no way to that stuff today. The Walking Dead's strengths aren't it's gore, or language either, it's its deep, disturbing content. If they can show Jack Bauer torturing people on Fox, you can have people battling their morals on The Walking Dead.

Yes, that makes sense, but Rosie then asked if it were possible some time in the future.. assuming after he had established himself. He shot her down again. I think the major annoyance behind all that is that he does this shit while talking and pretending he is a nice guy and your very best friend.

You can talk about this in the WD TV thread :). Costanza posted it.
