Late to the Party: Steambot Chronicles

Where is the love for this game? The game was highly recommended to me by my brother, so I picked it up, and I'm loving every single moment of it. The controls at first were clunky when using the Trot machines, but I got use to them. The combat is solid, and the world/cities both feel lively and have great scale to them. The models are nice, even if the rest of the world doesn't look great. Nice water effects too. I'm also liking how many options you have for making money. You can escort people to another city if you buy a carriage for your Trot Machine, or you can mine and bring back fossils to a museum if you buy another upgrade. It makes it interesting earning money, unlike the normal way in most games of selling items or defeating enemies.

The music is great, but it would be nice if the translation for the songs wasn't direct. The lyrics were odd at most times.

Odd is being kind.

I hope they get a second crack at this game. I'd love to see it with refined controls and music games and a world that wasn't so dang ugly -- because the story and game were unique and interesting enough to make up for it. A complete Steambot package would be really great.

i thought the song's were taken from the JP version where they were already in english?

even though i've finished the game a few times i still have much sidequesting i havent gotten around too. i'm taking my time enjoying all the IREM goodness, because it doesnt happen that often.

though, since DR2 came out in march, i have to wonder what they're up to next (maybe designing a game with a new engine finally?)

I enjoyed the hell out of it. It definitely has it's problems. Slowdown during timing-based music minigames? Bah. And the camera sucks some royal ass during arena combat and some of the boss battles. Overall, a fun game.

BTW, the Lil' Swabby will make a man out of you.

you can't put a price on sparks
if it had more actual trotmobile fighting action and better controls, it woulda been an awesome game

I thought it was pretty decent in the few hours I played. If it drops to $30 or less I'll pick it up for sure, but not worth $50 IMO.

There was a party for this?

I got it, and I must say I did enjoy what I played. Perhaps I'll give it a try a little bit later ...

But damn I hate those controls for the mech.

I'm in Happy Garland right now, I've adapted nicely to the controls. I can do pretty much anything with relative ease. I probably won't get much further this next week because I'm on vacation.

I only have two questions, how long is the game? Is it worth multiple play-throughs to be both good and evil?

The Admin at the Atlus mb confirmed that all the songs were taken directly from the Japanese version. It is a good game, but it took me almost one whole play-thru just to get used to the crappy trot controls.

Controls like a Virtual On game.....y'know if you had control over the Virtuaroids after they were destroyed hunks of scrap. :lol

Also the songs were horrific and the graphics were not so good. I didn't finish the game myself but I heard it's under 20 hours long.

I was really looking forward to this game and it sucks to be disappointed.

I'd just like to say that for anyone who's played Armored Core, Virtual On, or Remote Control Dandy the controls in SBC are pretty straightforward. All the bitching about controls are unfounded, stick to platformers kiddies.

i didn't have any problem with controls but i think the entire game move at a too slow pace... i also found annoying that
- music minigame sucks
- you can make money with fossil,by carring people or selling goods, but they are just a bunch of nice way to say fetch quest... the funny thing is when you are playing the evil storyline and you have to do some fetch quest for your boss... ugh.
- i bought the claw arm and never needed a new weapon, nor did i never used a different body or different legs after buying the spider legs
- i could end any battle by just dashing to the enemy and hitting the melee attack button after reaching them
- i was really really really pissed off with the evil storyline ending
basicaly at the end you can decide to be the slave of the boss of the bad guys or you can become the new boss... if you decide to become the new boss, you just end up in a prison and nothing happen... what the hell?!?!?! where is the part where i destroy city and kill people?

I only played the demo to the game. I really enjoyed what I played and was able to get use to the controls quickly. I thought the game was interesting also. I'll admit that I had some interest in the game originally (mostly because it was published by Atlus), but since I was short on cash, I let it slip by me. I'd like to pick the game up myself, for a reduced price (like $30), but the chances of it happening aren't very likely I'm thinking, since Atlus games rarely drop price.

PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS oh god i am drowning in them
I only played up until a little past when the girl stops holding your hand, but I enjoyed it. I paid $10 for the Asia version and that felt about right. Fun, but not something that's going to jump to the top of my playlist.

This is one of the few games I have looked forward to, played the demo, then decided to pass on. This is made even more poignant by the fact that I buy goddamn EVERYTHING.

I've started playing this game a couple of days ago, and after 23 hours i must say that it is a very interesting game, with many technicals flaws, but otherwise fun. Alot of freedom is given to go about making money, with many sidequests and many little things that really adds up. If only it didn't slow down so much in weird points.
