Late to the Portal: so I heard this was a triumph…

Portal. A game that had one of the most positive reactions from gamers that I can remember. Awards, great reviews, everything positive. Needless to say I was curious to try it, but my PC was too old to run it when it came out. Some months later, I got a new computer and I remembered that I could try Portal now. And then I was like, “look at me still talking when there’s playing to do”. And playing I did. Besides already knowing quite a lot about the game, the first contact with the portal mechanic was great. Loved the idea, and actually doing it was so fun and different.

With the game proceeding, I was in complete awe of the way you could play with the portals (when I first did the flinging technique I actually paused the game to appreciate the awesome and brilliance the best I could…you gotta love speedy things). I liked the pace of the game, I could take my time, explore environments without being too worried with enemies attacking me out of nowhere and such. And near the end, when
that thing
happened, I was really surprised and like NO WAY, and it was so great to make the correct party escort submission position decision. The game really transported itself to another level in that moment.

I loved GlaDOS (how can you not?), made what could be a simple puzzle game so much more, so much more layered, and so funny. She did make me laugh, and laugh, and laugh, and laugh...oooooh boy. The final battle? No words can describe all that greatness packed in such a small period of gameplay. And this is one of Portal’s trumps, being such a short game; every moment could be packed with good things. I think we could use more games like this: short, straight to the point, no-filler experiences. A shorter experience, but every moment of it is great. If you have nothing else to put in your game, don’t repeat things, just for the sake of making it longer so that it could feel like it has “more value”, the game will simply lose steam. The game is short, but I loved every bit of it, and wouldn’t trade that for a longer, more hit-or-miss experience.

As I said, I already knew a fair share of things about the game before playing it, and even though I wish I could experience the game without knowing anything about it (specially the end song), I don’t think it ruined much of the experience. Among all the things this game is famous for, the only that didn’t click with me was the companion cube. I felt that
carrying it for only one level wasn’t enough to build a connection
, and when I was done, all I could think was “is that it?” Besides that, everything else delivered immensely.

This is one of the few games that the first thing I did after finishing it was to start a new game (I think I only did that before with ICO). It is one of my favorite games ever, and I love it so much I want to marry that thing. Everyone should play this game; it’s an excellent example of an experience only a videogame can provide, and maybe if we had more games like this we would try less to compare gaming to movies or books in order to legitimize gaming as a valuable medium and deserving of respect. Videogames have its unique road to travel, and I believe this is a great step towards new territory, in both gameplay and presentation of a story. I know this may sound hyperbolic, but I really am being so sincere right now.

As I said in the title, I heard this game was a triumph…

…and it is. I was a bit afraid that all the extremely positive feedback this game got was a overstatement of satisfaction, but no, this game really is a huge success.

In sum: love.

(and cake).

I have a question now: since the game was released, were any good mods released? Recommendations?

Completely agree with everything you said. Portal should be a model for future games (including its length and pricing).

And I didn't fell in love with the companion cube either. Now, the cake... That was an awesome cake.

I'm sad in a way because while I enjoyed Portal a lot, the sheer proliferation of the "in-jokes" has turned it all incredibly sour for me. Just the topic title and picture of cake instantaneously made me groan out loud.

Good OP, Portal does rocks. I would like to see more games in the same vein, short and polished in every way.

I've ignored the internet memes that were born from it before playing and I still do.

I couldn't resist them, they're just a display of love. don't hate love.

I was surprised that I actually felt something for the companion cube. :lol

The little guy was just so... helpful.

Yea, same.

These guys made a map pack based on the flash version of the game that someome made a while back. However, it's not just a room-by-room recreation. Some of the puzzles are carried over, but there's still a lot of new stuff.

One thing that's really nice about it is that it adds a bit of the difficulty that I felt was missing in the original game. Not only are the puzzles themselves harder, but there's some interesting applications of the portals that weren't in the original.

i played it for 15 minutes ( 5 minutes of it spent in that room waiting for the door open).
The annoying voice acting raped to my ears and i never touched to that game ever again.

Favorite game of 2007. Such a unique experience.

Before playing custom levels, try to beat the Advanced levels and challenges. Start out with the Advanced levels (shouldn't be too hard, except for 18 maybe). After that, move onto least portal challenges which will teach you good strategies for the least time challenges. Then comes the least steps challenges, which can be a little frustrating, but you'll get it with some perseverance. I powered through the entire thing in 2 days and it was quite fun and rewarding.

I can't decide if I'm looking forward to Portal 2 or HL2:E3 more. Can't wait.

two days ago, it would have been an easy decision for me to want portal 2 much more... yesterday i finished hl2e2 finally.. and i'm now stuck in the same position as you

First time I see anyone not liking the voice acting in Portal. GLaDOS' character is very clever and well done, a shame you didn't like it.

1) You suck.

2) You have a terrible perception of time. It's 1 minute.

Orange box was so amazing. I still haven't gotten around to playing TF2 yet. A freind at work keeps telling me I have to. So many games, not enough time.

I bought Orange Box for that on TF2

Got pretty far in my first run

I need to find time to finish it.

Thanks a lot for the link! I'm intrigued with the "interesting applications of portals" that you mention.

Thanks for the tips; I've done some of the advanced levels, I like the increase in difficulty, and since the game lets you be creative in your solutions, harder puzzles are very fun to tackle. I'm not so fond of the time attack challenges, I like to be forced to think harder to solve a puzzle, but not to run faster when doing it )

It ended when it got interesting and challenging. It felt like an oldschool shareware-style version of the full game.

The companion cube meant nothing to me, really.
I just threw that bitch into the incinerator
. I did, however, have some compassion for the turret-bots. They were adorable.

Just as a note - the same people that released the map pack, are those who made the Flash version (which is fucking great).

Same with me. It's like when I was a big Invader Zim fan, then a bunch of idiots started quoting GIR too damn much. "IM DANCING LIEK A MUNKEY LOLOLO." I hate that shit.

The "CAKE IS A LIE" meme is obnoxious.

I agree.
People mentioning it so much made me think there was some brilliant way to save it, where it would open up to reveal a baby puppy or something. If there is some way to save the cube, I never found it.

For me, Portal was the most overrated game of 2007. It was still a alright game though.

The legnth of the game was a issue for me. It was definitely too long and there was alot of ineffective padding in the game. I only really started enjoying the game once you had
escaped
, otherwise the first half of the game was just really tedious and I really had to force myself to play it. And even then I could only stand 15 minutes at the time.

Gameplay wise, it was okay. The portal idea was neat but personally I grew bored and I felt it lacked some depth to it. Like above though, I started to enjoy the gameplay alot more in the second half once it had become more focused and it felt like there was some meaning to it. It just felt really forced and repetitive in the first half. I'll echo the comments above about the companion cube, there wasn't nearly enough development and it turned out to be a gimmick.

Thats the thing that probably annoys me the most about Portal; Alot of it very cute and gimmicky and it feels really manufacted and forced. The Internet memes have only made it worse. "THE CAKE IS A LIE ^_^", "Y DID U LEAVE COMPANION CUBE 0_o". I can stand alot of the internet memes, but the Portal memes are just embarassing. Especially when people keep referencing them in real life and everyone is thinking: "What the fuck is he going on about?"

This applys to the end song. Yes, its catchy and cute, but jesus its overplayed to hell. The OPs title is a testerment to it. What especially fills me with all kinds of eRage is all the awards the music won (I'm looking at you Penny Arcade). If I was a developer who actually cared about what the internet thought/ a fanboy, I would be face palming myself because the music found in Halo 3, Mario Galaxy and Mass Effect is miles better compared to the music found in Portal.

Also, the credit song ('M4,Part 2') in Mass Effect totally kicks the shit out Portal's "Still Alive".

A little bump; I've just finished this Portal mod recommended by Vlad (thanks again!):

It was great, it was just like playing a new game, a Portal 2, if you will. It had a lot of challenging puzzles, and the ending was pretty cool.

So I'd like to ask if anyone recommends any other map pack of this kind, or is this the best one?

Me too, but still what made me laugh about it were Glados' commentary about it and some of the writings on walls.

Portal isn't overrated at all, it's rated just right. Probably the best 4 gaming hours of last year for me.

Regarding maps, make sure to play the ones made by the bethesda guy, they are great.

I approve of this thread. portal is probably the game of the generation.

I just beat portal a few days ago as well, and I agree; didn't feel much for the companion cube, and I wish I didn't have so much of the game spoiled for me, like "the cake is a lie," or the ending song.

I also wish I had a worthy PC :( Playing on PS3 sucks balls.

ignoring the dissenters is the best option for threadgoers here. :lol the cake is a lie etc.

i loved portal.. the "twist" was what made it amazing for me.

I know many found the game to be easy as hell, but Portal was a mindfuck for me after a few levels. I had to have my friend help me beat it.

The game is still good though.
