League of Legends Beta [PC] (Dota Clone)

I highly disgaree with anyone who thinks the persistence in the game does little. Been fighting some lower levels lately and ive got off some massive crits that basically killed them. my build is full crit damage. Persistence means everything in the the start.

I could go on and on to explain this but ive already done this in the thread.

Not like itll take long to hit 30 anyways so the inbalence wont last too long.

With normal, post-beta concurrency match-making will have a larger pool to pull from and you won't see lvl 1 vs lvl 30.

I can tell the ones saying the talents and runes don't matter have never played WoW.

Sure, you can say it's only a few percent here in there, but all those percentages added up make a huge difference. Hell, a level 30 probably has a few thousand gold in items worth of stat boosts.

Let's just take a quick look at what 30 talent points can do:

+2% crit
+0.6 ability power per level
+4% attack rate
-3% ability cooldown
ignore 6 armor
ignore 15% magic resistance
+3 attack damage
+10% crit strike damage
+5% base damage and magic damage
+6% health and energy regen
+6 armor
as well as a bonus to a spell

That is an absolute huge array of bonuses over level 1 players, and I'm not even counting spells/runes.

So I got a couple of games in tonight after everyone and their mother got a beta invite. I'm amazed at how terrible the game is performance wise, considering how minimal shit be. Tons of lag everywhere and ridiculous load times for some people to get in the game. The lobby/game system is just plain old confusing.

As for the actual game, it's sad to see the Dota influence ripped so heavily. Wish they had looked to other AoS too. ToB and EotA especially got so much right that it's kinda silly to just disregard the both of them. Also it's amazing that they built a whole new system and still managed to include Dota's fucking terrible pathing.

I played three games, first picked Jeena first or w/e the wind Jaina is called. Seemed to be complete bottom tier, a healer who can barely heal and her KoL nuke was not nearly as well implemented as it used to be. But whatever, I tried to squeeze that shitty bubble for all it was worth.

After winning that, mostly because the other team was terrible, I looked over the support character list (Which is really cool feature, though I'm sure it has more to do with the storefront they want to present) and found Morgana. A DD root and some sort of massive aoe, sign me up. Oh and another bubble.

To cut to the chase, I saw later when messing around in some menus that Morgana was the highest rated character or something and was completely unsurprised. I went 9-0-9 in my second time ever playing this game, not having much of a clue what the enemies I were facing could do or hell whether or not any given animation was friendly or not.

My biggest complaint, outside of how unambitious the thing is, is that there's seriously fuck all to do at the start of the game. As far as I could tell, there's no attack move, no denying, and no other characters to control. My left arm pressed a button maybe three times in the first five minutes.

I can tell the ones saying the talents and runes don't matter have never played WoW.
This isn't wow, that entire list doesn't make up for being able to dodge a single aoe or getting an extra whack in. The actual stat bonuses a level 30 has are rather meaningless.

Oh yea the positives: This game had a *much* more relaxed atmosphere than any Dota match I've ever played. My last game devolved into a teleport-die-alt-tab fest and it caused one guy to go nerdrage and pretty much everyone there laughed at him. I can very much see myself getting in a game before sleeping or something if people are gonna be that chill. Game still took too long after it was over though.

Thats what it looks like until you realize that its only letting him hit you for like 5 or 10 extra damage.

yeah, my summoner is level 30 now and i honestly don't feel it has given me a massive advantage.

the thing that makes the biggest difference for me is that my skill level has increased and my knowledge of what champions can do.

"This is the most unbalanced shit I've ever played. Guy can take us on 2v1 on a lane just because he's got runes, spells, and talents."

As said above, If the guy knows what he's doing he can take you on 2v1 in a lane simply because he's outlevelling you and doesn't have to compete with a partner for last hits.

The problem I have with LoL is that the matches just go on for to long.

Yeah this patch increased average match time up like 15 minutes for me, I much prefer the half hour matches.

Really? I've been getting lots of surrenders since the new patch, which shortens the games quite a bit for me. Normally if a game goes on for a while it's because it's balanced.

Got into the beta and am loving the game so far.

I'm not any good at it seeing as this is my first dota style game ever. Still, I'm finding the game to be so addicting. While playing Mass Effect today, I kept thinking "maybe I should play a game of LOL". This is mad unusual for me as I usually don't like strategy games.

So who are the best heroes? I don't know much about the balance so I don't know what beats what. Is picking someone with high hp and just getting hp upgrades still viable?

From what I've played so far, games seem to go on for too long simply because towers are more powerful than they should be.

From the *masteries*? A physical damage character gets something like +10% dps from the offense tree, with several of the bonuses not scaling and only being halfway relevant at champion level 1.

Several thousand gold? More like 200-300.

Well maybe I exaggerated, but the bonuses do scale as you level, since many of them are % based, so their value increases over time. It's not quite as imbalanced as I was lead to believe.

Still, having fun with the game overall, even though I feel damned useless. Guess I just haven't found a hero I click with yet.

Between my masteries and my runes, I can get 13% dodge or 23% cooldown reduction, depending on the hero I'm playing. For Jax, my dodge/armor page basically makes him god (not that he isn't already, just godlier). For casters, I can reach 38% cooldown reduction with a single item.

It can be a pretty big advantage if you put the effort into the rune pages.

I am really, really surprised at that statement...towers are strong, but its SO much easier to push them compared to DoTA. They target any creeps in the area 90% of the time over you, so even a melee hero can run in fearlessly and chip away at it.

PS: Masteries probably wont be as big of an issue later on, considering itll take a long time to get to 30, meaning there will be way more people in the "in between" levels to get matched with when its released. And even then, all it does is tweak your character to fit your playstyle a bit better, the better player can still easily pwn a 30. :P

100% actually. The towers will only attack you if you're the only person in its range or if you attack an enemy champion.

This game is so much fun...when you win!

Yeah got my first victory just now after round 5 games and it was a really late game, the one random on our team won it for us, he was doing crits every hit doing 900dmg! he was Tristana so I think I will be trying her out next.

Don't they switch to you if an enemy hero attacks you or you attack them?

Yikes. So I got into the Fileplanet weekend Beta thing, and finally decided to download it (I've been trying to get a HoN key instead, but beggars can't be choosers) and have a shot. Wait times are 35 minutes to download, and the only other link I'm seeing (from LoL's own boards) nets me a 45 kb/s download speed. Why can't people mirror it on Filefront or something so I can get my 900 kb/s. :<

Pretty long 4v5, we were all 18 and I'm roaming around as Teemo. This Jax (note: still very OP) sees me as I approach the team battle zone and comes after me by himself. I pretend to run away, just because I know it's going be a long fight and I don't want his teammates to join in. He follows me all the way across the map (confidence!) to the eastern edge until I find one of my earlier placed mushroom mines. I direct him into it and we battle it out. My items include a fully charged Bloodthirster (25% lifesteal) and a Wit's End (mana drain) among other things. His mana empties out fast and he can't use his abilities anymore, has to autoattack me. Spends much of the fight blinded and under mushroom poison. I solo kill him, finish at 70% health, and he makes a holy shit face in chat.

Fear Teemo in 1v1 physical dps battles.

i signed up. Username is GaimeGuy .

I have no experience with Dota, so this game is going to have somewhat of a learning curve.

Ryze seems like an interesting choice to me.

eh, i've one hit kill someone at the beginning of the game when i was at a low summoner level.

i did it with Jax. I activated that ability that does extra damage on the next hit and it just happened to crit. killed annie in a single blow. my summoner would've been no higher than level 10 at that point.

honestly, i think the persistent summoner aspect of the game has a very small impact on the game when compared to CHAMPION imbalances.

perceived SUMMONER imbalance isn't a big deal.

Yeah especially with wits end. That drains mana like crazy.

I played with him once. Utterly destroyed the other team. I dont think i am going to play him ever again. Its just too much overkill. Its like going fishing with thermonuclear weapons.

Just started playing, it's pretty cool, never was that much into dota, but i'm liking this one. I added some of you, tag is "King of Psyborg Rockstar", so if you see some random invite, it's me ; )

I think I'm misunderstanding the basics. If Jax's attack is at the highest level on the 'preview' of each character, what should I be upgrading when I play as him? Make him MORE powerful, or more health for survivability etc

Jax's abilities just let him get a greater return on the items that he gets so you mainly need things that give you damage and crit.

For survivability Jax just needs items that have +dodge on them and 1 life steal item.

Of course this doesn't work that well against caster champions. Or at least it doesn't work as well. Also you need to watch for anyone that has abilities or items that reflect damage, because Jax's damage output is so high theres a chance you might end up killing your self.

Edit: Also Infinity Edge is pretty much a must for any physical damage champion.

Edit 2: Speaking of which this game needs a hardcap on crit rate. 100% crit rate + crit damage is pretty broken.

Is this true of everyone? So I should always be buying items that exaggerate my existing abilities or should I buy things that compliment it? I suppose I'm simplifying it a lot, saying that I just won my first game online! 1 kill and 14 deaths but that's life :D

Well that depends on your play style. After playing a few games with the same hero maybe you will figure out what you items you need to supplement the way you play.

Morgana is amazing. I got into a match against another Morg and it was beautiful. Shields flying everywhere, trying to time roots against shields, the constant dancing in and out of line of fire for her dd. Really enjoyable stuff.

Buy items at the start to amplify your abilities, items at the end to make up for your shortcomings.

Well, assuming you trust yourself enough to do good. If you don't just get more hp.

Okay, I finally got around to downloading this and giving it a shot (only 2 rounds with the CPU, I honestly know nothing about this genre going in!) and it's fun! The game looks incredible. It's like...what I remember Warcraft 3 looking like through my nostalgia goggles. Sexy stuff.

Anyway, on to the beta nag comments. I can't say much about the gameplay, because I was really just fumbling around and having a blast learning.

I really don't like how much space and how spaced out everything in the game UI is. Enemy health is way up top, and buffs are barely visible (but I probably just don't understand the icons well enough for anything to snap anyway). Your HP and stats are at the bottom, and nothing makes good use of the real estate down there. I like how big the minimap is, but yikes, everything else needs to shrink a little. The whole quarter circle thing is just too huge, too useless. Many of the skill icons don't really meld well with the ability functions. Example: Rapid shot's icon is of a red dot sight on a head, but first thing that comes to mind for me is increase accuracy/crit chance. I guess a gun with muzzle flashes and numerous spent cartridges would work better. And I don't know what's going on with Soraka's Astral Blessing. Also, the interface textures look kinda stretched at 1680x1050.

Outside of that, the client UI isn't snappy. It's slow, but I guess that's because alot of it is held server-side. But still, a responsive UI would be really nice.

Anyways, enough nagging here. I guess I could be constructive and post a little something on their beta forums before my Fileplanet thing runs out. And then sneaking in a few more plays, because this game is damn fun!

I'd say the first thing to buy is something that restores mana/health. From there, get the upgrade for the item(I usually shoot for the phail that restores mana/health and gives you gold). The 2nd item you should get after that is the speed boots. Always get this, as it will help you with escaping and for reaching enemies as they run away. From there its personal preference, depending on what class you choose.

That hp regen +17.5 item is pretty much a must from what I see, if you want to do some good lane farming early game. It really helps a huge amount.

played some games with warwick (the wolf) last night.

fun character. in both games he hit level 18 first out of both teams. great champ for farming.

for the first time i was able to take on multiple champions at a time and hold my own. took 3 of them at once to kill me.

Was he level 18 as well? Seems crazy to me that Jax would lose a fight to anyone, but I've never tried a physical Teemo. Will have to go give that a shot because I like the character but playing him as a trap-centric character never works out at the end of the game.

Lately I've just been playing tank-ish melee types with defensive masteries/runes/gear and running around as an unkillable machine demanding 3+ heroes to slow me down.
