Leave the car parked in neutral or first gear?

Should you park in neutral or first?

When you apply a friction force to negate the force by generated by your engine to move forward that will degrade your brake pads.

Only if the disc is rotating against the pad......which when it's stopped, it's not.

That's like saying sandpaper will wear out because it's held up against a piece of wood or metal. Unless it's moving, it's not wearing anything.

Anything but neutral. Park brake > engine off > clutch out in gear. For an automatic: Park brake > shift to Park > engine off.

It's a little redundant in both cases but practicing a little redundancy/safety factor can save your ass.

I had a handbrake fail and my car was across the street when I woke up on a fairly flat driveway when I left it in neutral. It just gently rolled across the street, no damage to anything. Kind of lucky but I always leave it in gear now. First if it is going to roll back and reverse if it is going to roll forward. When parking on a street I also angle my tires so they would roll into the curb.

I live in San Francisco and you can get a ticket if you don't turn your wheels when parked(I got one) There is a good reason for this and it is obvious. That same reason applies to manual transmission.

Depends where I am. If the car is in my garage on level ground, I just set the brake. If I'm out somewhere with the car I throw it in first and set the brake.

Put it in neutral to spare the clutch

Automatic Transmissions don't have a clutch (the reply you quoted was in response to a person talking about what they do at a light in an automatic, their logic is stupidly flawed)
