Legend of Korra - Review Thread

To be expected when you use Rising as your base

Oh well saved me 15 bucks.

I haven't bought the game yet and I don't have a problem with reviews that aren't favorable to the game, but what the fuck is this shit? During the previews and hands on people were busting their nuts all over the screen.

You're really taking video game journalists' opinion of the combat over people that actually know what they're talking about?

This is one mighty dumb sentence.

If you truly are convinced that game journalists don't know what they're talking about, then why are you expending time and energy repeatedly posting in a review thread?

Unless, and this is just a throwaway thought, they don't know what they're talking about solely because their opinion is opposed to yours.

I cannot emphasize enough how much I hate the temple run sections. If I wanted to play that, I'd get on my phone and play it. Also, I've had more than a few deaths which feel a bit unfair.

With that said, if only Platinum was given the proper budget and time, I think they could make an amazing Avatar game.

Well, Platinum was bound to make ONE bad game. At the very least, It happened with an IP with a history of bad games instead of their best IPs or new ones like Bayonetta or Wonderful 101.

Don't worry we still love ya Platinum. :D

But it's actually pretty good though.

Another cheap tie-in game from Activision ? Wasn't there already a game this year called Transformers ? Call me shocked.

This series is way to good to ruin it with games and hollywood movies that getting rushed out just to meet some fucking deadline.

From the Wiki:
The series has been a critical and commercial success, drawing favorable comparisons with the HBO show Game of Thrones and the work of Hayao Miyazaki,[3] and has been praised by reviewers for its production values and for addressing sociopolitical issues such as social unrest and terrorism.

How accurate? Never watched an animated show like this.

I'm a couple chapters in, and the game seems fairly solid for a $15 title. Definitely worth checking out for fans of both the show + Platinum. It's not a $60 AAA game, so I have no idea why IGN is comparing it to games like Bayonetta 2 and Batman Arkham City. The IGN review bitches about it being too hard for younger fans of the show, but there's a casual difficulty mode specifically for people who don't have much experience with these types of action games.

So I think I've gotten pretty far in, no idea how this got such low scores from some reviewers. The combat is very fun to mess around with and master, even with the insane expectations I had going into this I'm not disappointed, and the time to parry isn't too short at all, no idea how someone can think that. Have to admit that I agree with IGN in that the story and charm is nothing like the show even though it was handled by one of the show writers, seems like a missed opportunity.

Just finished the PC version on Normal. The game isn't going to win any awards but some of the reviews are way too harsh. The game was clearly meant to be replayed to gain access to all the combos, which makes sense given the fact that it can be completed in around 4-5 hours. The combat is rather repetitive and there aren't a lot of different enemies, but it does get more interesting the more combos you master (which is again why replaying it basically mandatory). Pro-bending mode is pretty much what you'd expect, the gameplay is rather basic but it's a nice addition to the game.

What I found the most disappointing part is actually the story, which really doesn't live up to expectations. A lot of the events that occur simply don't make much sense and other than Korra there are very few returning characters from the show. The animated scenes don't really live look particularly great either, with poor animation and art that doesn't match the standards set by the series.

Basically, this game shows a glimpse of what an AAA The Legend of Korra game could be like, but this clearly didn't have anywhere near the budget to deliver a game worthy of the franchise. For $15, I'd say it's definitely worth picking up for fans of the series. For the others, perhaps not so much. Still, there are far worse games to spend your money on.

EDIT: one thing to note is that the PC version, as one might expect, is poorly optimized. There are practically no graphics settings other than the resolution (maxed out at 1920x1080) and the graphics quality (you only get a choice between "Normal" or "Smooth"). Framerate seems to be capped at 60fps.

stop giving BioGamer Girl clicks

I've known people who met her, and it's my understanding she self-identifies as a blogger, not a critic. Loves nothing more than to make friends/be social/drink and get invited to review events, and reward the publishers with high scores

See: COD Ghosts 10/10, Destiny 9/10, this game, and I know they are currently (or were recently) at the COD AW review event (paid by activision of course). Expect another 9+ from that.
So...basically a typical games journalist.

Reviewers gonna give shit reviews.

I played the game twice in casual and normal. The difficulty is perfect for both. Kids can definitely play casual and beat it.

Perfect length for a $15 game, looks gorgeous, combat is extremely well done. I'd disregard those reviewers because they seriously don't know how to do their job.

That's how I feel. For the price, if you are a fan of Platinum and a fan of Korra it's a good get. I've finished normal but need to replay on extreme and go through Pro-bending. I would love to see Platinum get given a second chance and given a bigger budget and more development time to see something truly special. Not sure how likely that'll be though as Korra will wrap up at the end of this season and like with all tie-in games they only exist to sell toys or drive up views of the actual thing it's promoting.

Would be cool to get a Korra game after Book 4 (if plot permits) or even an Aang game set after Book 3 and the comics (maybe with adult Aang?).

With the PC version I found it ran great even when forcing AF and AA through the Nvidia control panel. It looked super smooth and sharp with next to no jaggies (none I could see from where I was sitting). Think it looked as good as it could for me given the less then great models and textures in the game.

So what's bad about them?

Going to sleep, will update the OP in a few hours if new reviews come up. I apologize for any delay.

Wow them scores!

Would I have downloaded it if I saw these impressions first?
yes
.
I a have yet to play it, but I think I will look forward to it because I like the franchise.

I'm not sure poorly optimized is what you mean. There's a lack of options yeah, but I'm pretty sure it runs at 60fps on most any PC.

Well, at least most have some sort of editorial team / a boss that they need to be aware of and actually do a job for which they are getting paid.

She is just a freelancer that got lucky with exposure to certain PR departments who realized her easy going scoring.

Alright, as if I wasn't convinced that me and gaming journalists have differing tastes before, this game really highlights that fact. This game, to me at least, is not a 3/10, a 4.2/10 or even a 6.5/10. If I had to give it a grade score so far it'd be a solid 8/10.

I really like the combat system
(once I figured out that you could swap Korra's stance and her fighting style changed, it was a game changer!)
and the challenge. It's standard Platinum Games challenge... they train you how to use the fight mechanics and then release you into the wild. If you fuck up or get sloppy, you get punished by the enemy. If you get stuck in an area where you keep dying, you can access Iroh's store from the continue menu at whatever the last checkpoint you hit. This is where you can buy new skills/abilities, talismans that buff you in different ways and healing items (these have been CRUCIAL for me so far).

Some things I don't like would be the camera and the lock on system. I spend most of my fights fighting the damn camera to try to get it to show me where the enemies are and I don't even bother using the lock on because it's a pain trying to cycle through the enemies to get to the one standing closest to you.

I just started playing this game this evening and I'm up to chapter 4. I don't know how far into the actual game I am, but I'm really liking it so far!
minus the Temple Run BS in Republic City

The bad review scores from the major sites are downright bizarre. I got the game today and beat it on Normal. While it is short (4 hours for my first playthrough, before touching NG+ or extras) the quality is definitely there. Honestly I'd compare it to Call of Juarez: Gunslinger; both are a short but sweet $15 game that nails the core gameplay and doesn't overstay it's welcome. But whereas Gunslinger was favorably reviewed, Korra is getting panned, unfairly I believe. I'd give the game a solid 8/10.

I totally don't get the negative reviews. It's not a 10/10, but it's definitely a solid 8 for fans of the genre, and a 7 for everybody else.

The combat system seems to be a more basic version of metal gear rising, which was one of my favorite games last gen. It lacks variety and fancy stages... but I think that's to be expected, given the budget and $15 price point.

I wonder if it's ok to include more less known review sites? This licensed game isn't really getting that much...^^

I'm pretty sure the Moviepilot guy never even played the game.
It just reads like he amassed information from all over the place, threw it all together and called it a review.

There is some factually incorrect information in there (such as each bending element being assigned to its own button, which is not a mistake anyone who's actually played the game would make), or the mentioning of "different creatures" to ride, when it's only Naga.

Plus, his is the only review that went up on the 20th (before the embargo), so I'm calling shenanigans.

Edit: Aaaaaaand the BioGamer Girl review says the exact same thing about bending elements being assigned to buttons (which only happens during Naga Running sequences). Wow.
The only really positive reviewers don't seem to have actually played the game :S

Oh wow. I also found this weird site here. Gave it 5.5

Considering Biogamergirl's insane high review scores for all Activision products (Destiny especially), seems likes it's rather shady.

Kind of a shame about Gamespot / IGN though. They actually played it and failed miserably.

I think reviewers giving this game insanely high scores are just as silly as the ones calling it pure garbage. Destructoid's review seems like the most reasonable one of the bunch. The game has problems, but it's a fun quickie for action game fans.

Gametrailers - 6.5

There was so much potential for Korra when you consider the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a developer like Platinum to work on the combat, but it seems like the Japanese studio's B-team showed up for this project. The game is certainly better than any of the previous efforts to adapt the Avatar universe, but it falls short of expectations. On its own, it's just an average character action game with a bland story that offers little incentive to come back for seconds. You're better off sticking to watching the show.

Game is fun as hell, gorgeous for what it is, and even on normal I'm funding challenge.

Reviewers have to remember this is a $15 Budget title, not AAA tier such as MGR, Vanquish or Bayonetta.

For what it is, a $15 downloadable cartoon series adaptation, it's fantastic and could've been much worse. Easily 4/5 when weighing in those factors.

There are a lot of great $15 or less games. There are a lot of $15 games that have great reviews and those are not based on the logic "this is a game that deserves a 9 based on its price". The price shouldn't be the most important factor in the quality of a game. I think the more limiting factor here is that Platinum was developing on the concept and story of others, not theirs. Time and budget constraints didn't help either.

This track is amazing. -3 to the game for interrupting it with other fight musics 90% of the time it plays.

Game is still 7/10 for what it is, though.

Wish they'd had the budget for some polish, and that they'd written a story that made sense and wasn't just an excuse to string fights and locations together, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time playing this.

It's pretty obviously built on the Bayonetta engine, and while it doesn't have near the combo depth or polish of that game, it's a hell of a pedigree to build a foundation on. When it's clicking, it's so, so satisfying, but you'll wish there were more scenarios where you just got to fight against well-balanced waves of enemies.

Extreme difficulty is bullshit.

What about the difficulty? Some say it is too easy, some say the boss fights are tough. The naga runs seem to be difficult too.

I am not really a pro with those action games, to be honest :D
