They use 6000 tons of plastic a year to make up to 60 Billion pieces. They'll open a research center next year staffed with 100 people trying to find sustainable alternatives.

The toy company announced this week that it plans to invest 1 billion Danish Krone (or about $150 million) over the next 15 years in a program to develop new “sustainable” materials which will eventually replace the plastic currently used to make its iconic building blocks. Lego also plans to make its packaging more environmentally-friendly.

The move is a testament to the company’s “continued ambition to leave a positive impact on the planet, which future generations will inherit," Lego Group owner Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen said in a news release.

Part of the investment will go the establishment of a Lego Sustainable Materials Centre in Denmark, which the company says will be staffed with more than 100 specialists. The centre is slated to open its doors by 2016.

Fuck biodegradable bricks (give it time); this is like eco cases for DVDs.

There is no reason to throw the shit away, make a durable and keep it durable.

Interesting. They've already made some strides in packaging, such as how they transitioned from hard plastic containers to plastic bags to thin cardboard for constraction sets.

Part of the reason why Lego bricks are so popular is that they extremely durable, and can remain in lock with other bricks for decades. Whatever they chose for the next materiel needs to meet the same standards.

Eventually LEGO will be all about 3D printing. And you'll be able to recycle them to turn them back into 3D Printing powder.

150Mil and 15 years...imagine one specialist perfects renewable lego in 12 months and gets one of the biggest corporate golden handshakes while simultaneously receiving death threats from their, now redundant, fellow specialists.
