Lesser known PS1 games you loved back in the day

The latter more well known, however it is my favorite PS1 game!

Only lesser known PSX game that I played and actually liked was Trap Gunner.

I guess, maybe, Legend of Legaia might count too though I'm not sure that it's THAT unknown. It's my favorite RPG of all time. Of all time!

I don't know how good it would be today, but I loved it when I was younger. It was a good mix of dungeon crawling and relationship building.

I still own it. I should pop it into the PS3. I heard there's a sudo-sequel on DS, but I also heard it sucks.

As a huge King's Field fan, I always wanted to pick up Shadow Tower. Still salty to this day about SCEA blocking Shadow Tower Abyss.

Yeah, don't even get me started on that bullshit. Apparently, Agetec had everything done and ready besides the box art, if I remember the whole situation clearly. SCEA said "fuck no" to Agetec for god knows what reason, and we never got it. My brother and I were huge King's Field/From Software fans since we were exposed to these games, and trust me, back in the PS2 days we were mega-pissed off.

We did end up importing copies of Shadow Tower Abyss though and we modded a PS2 to play it. It was so worth it. STA was pretty much what we wanted from the original. The controls were tighter, areas were more coherent & detailed. Since there is like NO ONE to talk to in these games you can get through the Japanese version without too many hitches. It was completely playable, despite missing out on some confusing text and descriptions here and there.

The best thing about Abyss was that you could slice off enemy parts. Say you decapitated an enemy's head, some would continue to walk around in a daze, attacking you haphazardly because they couldn't see shit! Same with enemy legs, some would limp on the floor, crawling towards you attempting to take you out even though they couldn't walk anymore. It was so cool.

frigging G POLICE was awesome back in the day. sure the graphics have aged like crap, but i'd love to play that game one more time..

Now that I really think about it I think the vast majority of my ps1 days where spent mostly on Monster Raising/Battling/Creating games, and Strategy JRPGs.

I played many other games but there were so many great games in both of these genres on the ps1 that I always had games that sucked huge amounts of time away from me no matter what I did.

Hell I remember spending months on monster rancher going through every single disc I had in my house to trying to figure out which albumbs/ games/ etc gave what monsters and then spending much more time training them and fighting them.

Such a shame that genre died out, but at least we still get quite a few good SJRPGS, though still nothing like the PS1

The PS1 was when I loved gaming the most. It was also the only time I could say I supported Sony. There's something about the low poly, unrefined look of the games that just strikes me the right way. Looking through my almost complete collection:

Alien Trilogy - A fantastic Doom style FPS. Wasn't too hard, GODLY soundtrack, and atmosphere out the wazoo.

Alien Resurrection - Having played it again recently, it does seem a bit flawed, but it got somethings right few other games of it's time did. The dual analog controls worked wonderfully ... until you needed to see straight down to shoot, say, a facehugger, and found that you couldn't see down that far. Still, the alien embryo mechanics were perfect and I have yet to see any other Alien game stay that faithful to the original movie.

Battle Arena Toshinden 2 - I wasn't too fond of 1 (never played 3 .Can't find the damned thing in good condition anywhere), but 2 seemed much more grand and had a boss soundtrack as well. I heart Tracy. Oh, and it had Vermillion. The coolest sub-boss in a fighting game ever.

Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain - It seems to be lesser known, anyway. Everyone always talks about Soul Reaver like it's the only part of the Legacy of Kain. Yes, except you, Mama Robotnik. If there was ever a way to eliminate or at least drastically shorten the load times, it would have been just about perfect.

Bust A Groove and Bust A Groove 2 - Haters of 2 can lick my stick, it had better music. And Capoeira was not completely synchronized.

Colony Wars Vengeance - You know what else was as good? Star Trek Invasion.

Disruptor - Every level was unique. Something you don't really see these days. Oh, and I love that $2.50 transporter!

Einhander - I call it Square's best game. Probably because I'm insane. Oh, and it is.

Elemental Gearbolt - I make no apologies for my love of light gun shooters, and this is one of my all-time favorites. I still haven't gotten all the damned chalices.

Legend of Legaia - I finally got around to finishing this a couple of years ago, and I had a total blast. It's kinda short, and the story ain't all that, but the battle system was sweet and I didn't hate any of the characters. Thumbs up in my book.

Medal of Honor: Underground
- Seems everyone forgot this existed. Besides being cooler than the original, it had the "Where Beagles Dare" mission. Which is beyond awesome.

The Misadventures of Tron Bonne - One of my most favorite PS1 games. Abusing Servbots is always awesome, and the varied gameplay styles was a fresh take.

One - I like games that let me cut loose with abandon once in a while, and rewarding me for destroying shit was a good move. The platforming blows, but I can forgive that in the face of the quality shooting.

Pandemonium! and Pandemonium! 2 - When these came out, I was a bit worn out on platformers, but bought them anyway. I didn't play them until around 5 or 6 years ago, and I now regret that. P2, in particular, which seems way more psychadelic and.... uh, Nikki is .... uh...

RC Stunt Copter - I remember when Dave Perry was touting this as a game that would be made by just two guys, and was called Fly By Wire. I don't know why, but it intrigued me and I followed it's progress from that moment on. Things changed in that time, but I was not disappointed in the final product. The ending movie was pretty funny, too. I may have broken a controller while playing.

Skullmonkeys - I didn't have a good PC when The Neverhood came out, but my PS1 sure as hell ran it's... sequel. The soundtrack was awesome, the cutscenes were hilarious, and the platforming was brutal.

Strider 2 - Yeah, it's really badly flawed, but I loved the look. I can't get enough of 2.5 games.

Tecmo's Deception, Kagero: Deception 2, and Deception 3 - I've never seen a copy of Trapt. I hear that's a good thing. I don't know, but I had so much fun with it's kinda-prequels, that I may look for it, regardless.

Tobal No. 1 and Tobal 2 - Smooth and fun. Just like I like 'em. I'm probably one of 10 people on the entire planet that played the game more than the included FF7 demo. Gren is my man.

Turbo Prop Racing - I was on a Hydro Thunder kick when it first hit arcades, so I tracked down a copy of this less adrenalized boat racer. It may be not as kinetic, but it runs at 60 fps (believe it or not), and included a fractal map generator.

There's a lot more, but everyone has played Resident Evil 3 and MediEvil. Right?

I don't know the name of this game. It was some kind of wacky volleyball game with pretty crazy character designs and different kinds of balls to play with.

Pretty colorful (also suffering from really bad PAL slowdowns).

Don't know the name. But it was pretty fun back then.

Rogue Trip. I don't know how popular it was, but among my friends and acquaintances I was the only one who cared for it.

While good, I'm not sure about "lesser known." Especially Bushido Blade. I feel like that game was everywhere and talked about all the time, but memories are fallible so I could be wrong.

Anyway, my usuals for these threads:
Unholy War

GO PLAY FUTURE COP AND PLAY PRECINCT ASSAULT MODE AND HAVE YOUR LIFE CHANGED.

You can and will thank me later.

I never got to try that game properly, but wasn't it just a reskin of the too-violent-to-be-released game Thrill Kill?
Yes. I had both. A pirated copy of Thrill Kill and the Wu Tang game. The Wu Tang game was more fun because it had a crazy story and more modes. Thrill Kill had dismemberment though.

I haven't played this in forever, but if I remember rightly it was a 3D adventure game in similar vein of Zelda. I remember the way they spoke being good / bad, but it's been so long since I played it I honestly don't remember (and can't access YouTube at the moment.)

Ghoul_Panic_Pal.jpg

Point blank style shooter based in a haunted house. The bosses were pretty epic, having players fight enemies such as Dracula, Frankenstein's monster and a witch.

Micro Machines with little characters instead of cars. It's the same developer too.

Overboard.jpg

A fun top down game where you controlled a variety of different pirate ships sailing from one level to another. I remember the intro being very cartoony and silly and I think there was a pretty cool two player mode too.

Monkey_Hero_ntsc-front.jpg

Another top down game based on the old tale, Journey to the West. This was another Zelda inspired one, with dungeon and town levels where you interacted with NPCs.

And this game if anyone else can name it. =)

Dead%20ball%20zone.jpg

Dead Ball Zone was a very fun multiplayer game. Kind of makes me miss all of the futuristic violent sport themed games that came out during that period.

Crime Crackers and its sequel were very fun. Its a Doom style Japanese FPS game where you can change between 4 characters on the fly. I would love to see an update with better controls. It has the most personality out of any FPS game I played.

This game wasn't all that good iirc, yet the 4 player multi kept me & my mates up for days till we finished it.

I'm surprised this game is mentioned. It was extremely unpolished but local 4 player action rpgs are extremely rare (even moreso now).

Here is my contribution:

Awesome verhicular combat using submarines.

Loved this game... the GBC version's pretty good too.

Formula 1 '97 was a fucking blast. i remember that i did a full distance run in monaco once. and in the the last lap... my engine broke.

YEEEESSSS! Beatmania on PS1 was SOOO GOOOD! Huge fan of Beatmania 6th mix myself. That game had both quality and quantity. I still have Bad City stuck in my head after all these years.

Also DDR 4th mix. So many good memories of that game.

Playstation One was such a great era for games.
