The PS1 was when I loved gaming the most. It was also the only time I could say I supported Sony. There's something about the low poly, unrefined look of the games that just strikes me the right way. Looking through my almost complete collection:
Alien Trilogy - A fantastic Doom style FPS. Wasn't too hard, GODLY soundtrack, and atmosphere out the wazoo.
Alien Resurrection - Having played it again recently, it does seem a bit flawed, but it got somethings right few other games of it's time did. The dual analog controls worked wonderfully ... until you needed to see straight down to shoot, say, a facehugger, and found that you couldn't see down that far. Still, the alien embryo mechanics were perfect and I have yet to see any other Alien game stay that faithful to the original movie.
Battle Arena Toshinden 2 - I wasn't too fond of 1 (never played 3 .Can't find the damned thing in good condition anywhere), but 2 seemed much more grand and had a boss soundtrack as well. I heart Tracy. Oh, and it had Vermillion. The coolest sub-boss in a fighting game ever.
Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain - It seems to be lesser known, anyway. Everyone always talks about Soul Reaver like it's the only part of the Legacy of Kain. Yes, except you, Mama Robotnik. If there was ever a way to eliminate or at least drastically shorten the load times, it would have been just about perfect.
Bust A Groove and
Bust A Groove 2 - Haters of 2 can lick my stick, it had better music. And Capoeira was not completely synchronized.
Colony Wars Vengeance - You know what else was as good?
Star Trek Invasion.
Disruptor - Every level was unique. Something you don't really see these days. Oh, and I love that $2.50 transporter!
Einhander - I call it Square's best game. Probably because I'm insane. Oh, and it is.
Elemental Gearbolt - I make no apologies for my love of light gun shooters, and this is one of my all-time favorites. I still haven't gotten all the damned chalices.
Legend of Legaia - I finally got around to finishing this a couple of years ago, and I had a total blast. It's kinda short, and the story ain't all that, but the battle system was sweet and I didn't hate any of the characters. Thumbs up in my book.
Medal of Honor: Underground - Seems everyone forgot this existed. Besides being cooler than the original, it had the
"Where Beagles Dare" mission. Which is beyond awesome.
The Misadventures of Tron Bonne - One of my most favorite PS1 games. Abusing Servbots is always awesome, and the varied gameplay styles was a fresh take.
One - I like games that let me cut loose with abandon once in a while, and rewarding me for destroying shit was a good move. The platforming blows, but I can forgive that in the face of the quality shooting.
Pandemonium! and
Pandemonium! 2 - When these came out, I was a bit worn out on platformers, but bought them anyway. I didn't play them until around 5 or 6 years ago, and I now regret that. P2, in particular, which seems way more psychadelic and.... uh, Nikki is .... uh...
RC Stunt Copter - I remember when Dave Perry was touting this as a game that would be made by just two guys, and was called Fly By Wire. I don't know why, but it intrigued me and I followed it's progress from that moment on. Things changed in that time, but I was not disappointed in the final product. The ending movie was pretty funny, too. I may have broken a controller while playing.
Skullmonkeys - I didn't have a good PC when The Neverhood came out, but my PS1 sure as hell ran it's... sequel. The soundtrack was awesome, the cutscenes were
hilarious, and the platforming was brutal.
Strider 2 - Yeah, it's really badly flawed, but I loved the look. I can't get enough of 2.5 games.
Tecmo's Deception,
Kagero: Deception 2, and
Deception 3 - I've never seen a copy of Trapt. I hear that's a good thing. I don't know, but I had so much fun with it's kinda-prequels, that I may look for it, regardless.
Tobal No. 1 and
Tobal 2 - Smooth and fun. Just like I like 'em. I'm probably one of 10 people on the entire planet that played the game more than the included FF7 demo. Gren is my man.
Turbo Prop Racing - I was on a Hydro Thunder kick when it first hit arcades, so I tracked down a copy of this less adrenalized boat racer. It may be not as kinetic, but it runs at 60 fps (believe it or not), and included a fractal map generator.
There's a lot more, but everyone has played Resident Evil 3 and MediEvil. Right?
