Lesser known PS1 games you loved back in the day

I did not get my first gaming PC till about 1999, so I often had to make do with PS1 ports of PC games

Oh and found this neat site if anyone wants a trip down memory lane, http://www.coverbrowser.com/covers/playstation-games

Doesn't seem like a lot of lesser-known releases to me, but it's still a good excuse to list PS1 stuff we like. Most of the other stuff I'd list has already been listed multiple times.

One on One (Japanese action half-court basketball game).

Rakugaki Showtime (Japanese Treasure multiplayer action game, somewhat similar to the Pointer's Point/Poy Poy games).

Clock Tower (Sequel to the SFC game, also a point 'n click horror adventure).

Wow, I totally forgot about D. It was one of my first PS1 games as well. At the time it was like the best looking game you could get on a home console and it scared the shit out of me. Really thick, creepy atmosphere.

I had The Hive as well, and remember thinking how good it looked.

But I basically came in here to see if anyone would post OverBlood and the OP nailed it, so nice work GAF.

Boo at you guys for not mentioning Elemental Gearbolt.

Glad to see Vigilante 8 is mentioned. One of my most favorite car combat games. I especially liked how almost every single environment is destructible.

Yep I loved future cop too, remember playing the game with my cousin in co-op mode after school. Favorite weapons where the ones that produced the big shockwave and the electrical stream.
Plus turning into a hover craft at will was just plain cool.

I quite liked playing the competitive mode against the cpu aswell.

I remember there being a racing game sequal but I never got it, sounded kinda crap.

Clock Tower! Loved it. Slow and clunky, but so scary and awesome <3

Too bad this one was never localized - the game was fully in English almost - even the FMVs were acted in English altogether. Come to think of it, Monkeypaw should DEFINITELY release this on the PSone - though the Pepsi license may be quite a hurdle.

Dynasty Warriors: Such an awesome fighting game. Plus it had three kingdoms characters and Nobunaga! I wish Koei would make another DW game like this.

Fire Pro Wrestling G: Probably my favorite game in the series.

Super Robot Taisen Alpha: Evangelion, Macross...together...nuff said.

Neo Atlas: There is prequel released on PC as "The Atlas" as well as a Super Famicom/Turbo-CD version. I wish Artdink would have brought this out to the west. It was so neat sending your dudes out to explore uncharted areas of the world. Really addicting.

Silent Bomber: The demo from OPM sold me on this one. I loved the art style.

Tobal #2
: I never really played Tobal 1 other than at a girlfriends house. Tobal 2 was one of my good finds from ebay back around 01, it was such a fantastic game in every way.

Tokyo Highway Battle: Played just about every game in this series on DC,PSone, and PS2. Really want to pick up the 360 one.

Eretzvaju: God I want a sequel to this so bad. One of my fav PSone games.

Rage Racer: I love/play every single RR game. This one was so revolutionary at the time. (I don't really consider this one a lesser known...but someone else posted it!)

Tail Concerto: One of my early imports, it was so quirky.

Bust a Move: I still love the music in this game.

Tondemo Crisis: Another crazy game!

Ace Combat 3 (JP): Freaking awesome, so underrated due to the horrible US release.

What a game huh?! They should release it on the PSN! Did you hear about the fan-remake of the game that is on the way?? It looks interesting by the way!

Hell, I'd be happy with a new-aged sequel!

This is maybe my favorite game on the PS1. I put well over 200 hours into it over multiple playthroughs. Check it out sometime if you like SRPGs.

I loved Flashback and made this one of my first PSX game purchases. I enjoyed it.

Animation was cool and I liked the puzzle gameplay.

I can't remember too much about this but I know I liked it.

One of my favorite games on PSX. Appeals to the Mario 64 fan in me.

I loved this game so, so much.

Is this one on the PS Store?

Don't think it's on the EU PS store, at least. But yeah, it was pretty cool.

That game where there's this guy with a huge sword or something chasing you in a church. It was a horror game I think it was called Clock Tower, googling now to see if I can get the cover. But that game scared the fucking shit out of me so much. edit - I guess they were scissors instead of a sword.

I remember first playing on demo of the game on one of those PS1 demo compilations. The demo must have been an hour long. It's been over 10 years since I have played the game, but I remember co-op being extremely fun. Me and my brother played that demo at least a dozen times before getting the game.

Ah, I guess it's not in the US one either. Oh well.

Great thread.
I too loved Gex: Enter the Gecko, Tomba!, Trap Gunner and Wild 9. Jade Cocoon wasn't bad either.

Here are some that I believe haven't been mentioned yet...

blast_chamber_front.jpg

Blast Chamber
Kinda hard to describe. You play against 3 other players/cpu and your goal is not to explode, and score the most points. For both you need to pickup crystals and put them in your goal. You'll need however to rotate the stage, jump around on springs... loved the stage interactions in this one.
Gameplay

The Unholy War
A turn-based strategy game that turned into an action game once two units fought. It was incredibly awesome. My first avatar on this forum was actually the Mantis unit from this game, kept it for a couple of years..

V-Rally was under the Need For Speed moniker in US?!?!?!?! The more you know.jpg
V Rally 2 was even funnier because it was released both as NFS and Test Drive game.

I cannot believe that people haven´t put this one, it wa a fucking awesome game, i love beating sephiroth ass everytime LOL!:

And this game was so goddamn good too:

My picks:

Like Resident Evil, but with a cooler story. Great narrative in which you're exposed only step-by-step into what's going on starting with trying to find out who and where you are. Only reading the manual actually spoils some of the fun already.

2vuinpd.jpg

Anime-style breakout clone, addicting and funny animations (and original voices).

King's Field was one of those games I would rent multiple times, but for some reason never purchased. It was a first person rpg, but it was very slow, very plodding, and most of all it was extremely difficult. This was actually the second game in the series, though the first never quite got out of Japan. So this game was simply dubbed King's Field, and it of course was developed by From Software, the people who eventually brought us Demon's Souls, and the soon to be released Dark Souls. But even though it had issues, it drew you into it's world. You were utterly alone, though you would meet the occasional NPC or merchant. I recently acquired (finally) a copy of this, and it is still as difficult as it ever was. Oh my God is this game hard. But I love it. Also loved Kings Field 2 (KF3 in Japan) just as much. Someday I have to get a copy of that as well.

Some of you early Playstation adopters may remember a video for this game on the original purple "Playstation Picks" demo disc released with systems in the States. Kileak The Blood was a Doom Clone. Though it's mechanical enemies were not as inspired as Doom's baddies, they were all polygonal, not flat 2d sprites. This is another one of those games while deemed bad by nearly all who played it, kept me hooked because of that King's Field-like feeling of isolation that it provided. These foolish looking but extremely dangerous robots would pop out of the darkness often scaring the living shit out of me. Even though it was repetitive as hell and the controls were iffy at best (just imagine playing an fps with only a d-pad) I played this for hours and hours. I think this game emotionally scarred me.

Ok, enough. I could literally go on and on. But i want to hear about some of those lessor known titles you used to play to death. Again, they don't have to be as obscure as some of these, but bonus points for you if they are.

Holy hell OP I love you. Came in to post these two.

OMG you people stealing all my faves:

Man, so many memories. I loved Nightmare Creatures, game was pretty awesome. I also remember really, really wanting to buy Johnny Bazookatone and Rapid Reload, but I'm kinda glad I didn't, seeing that JB looks pretty awful, and Rapid Reload seems way too hard for me. I played the demos of Motorhead, Micro Machines, Pandemonium! and Fade to Black too, and the first three were fun, but I didn't like confusing and clunky gameplay of Fade to Black.

The PS1 really did have an amazingly diverse library of games.

PS: Gex 3D was awesome. Liked it way more than Mario 64 (which I still don't think is a particularly good game)

Edit: Oh, just noticed some other games. Had the demos of G Darius, Rollcage and Wild 9 too. Good shit. I had Alien Trilogy too, and shit was so cash. And Motor Toon Grand Prix, man, I wish Polyphony would make a sequel before starting GT6. MTGP was awesome. I had Tobal no. 1 too, and it was.. not very good.

I also remember playing Krazy Ivan on the PS1, and the game pretty mech blew.

Krazy_Ivan_Pal.jpg

Edit 2: Oh ho, I had Duke Nukem 3D: Total Meltdown too for the PS1. I'll have to snag a copy off Amazon later today. Loved the re-recorded music.

Back when Psygnosis could do no wrong, the G-Police and Colony Wars series had high production values, graphics, and difficulty.

This game was amazing~ because of a misunderstanding you become the master of an "evil" castle.

The entire game is just different hunters/monsters coming after you while you design your castles floor plan and set up traps that you have to lure enemies into.

And D! DDDDD!!! Someone posted D!!!

This is my darling:
