Lesser known PS1 games you loved back in the day

I can't believe no one put this up yet... Man, did I spend months on that game.

Still fun today. Where's our next-gen Monster Rancher??

Only thing I've seen that comes close to it recently but it's for the iphone/ipod touch sadly :-(

Wish I actually owned this game, I had the first two or so levels on a demo disc. I remember playing that so many times.

Everyone hates on this game, I had a lot of fun with it. It was a genuine scary atmosphere for me. You would constantly hear face huggers in the shadows and such.

Really fun light gun Diehard 2 levels. Had fun with all of them though.

Load times were super long, even for ps1. It even had options to turn off the fmv that would load before the level would load for marginally faster loading. And knocking over your friend with your arm while you are on a luge and hes on a bike was funny. I was mostly a rollerblade man though.

I want to put in game discs and get me some monsters.

I think there was a DS Monster Rancher that came out recently, but... It's just not the same.

This game came out around the same DVD/VHS release of the Ghost in the Shell movie( though I first saw it on pay-per-view). Being the GiTS fan, so I really wanted to get this game. Of coarse, it was based on the manga and you don't play as Kusanagi, but an unknown male character piloting a Fuchikoma. Not really a bad game(imo) despite all that, I still enjoyed it. It had some really animation sequences done my Production I.G as well

Also, this thread is making me so nostalgic lol.

An interesting adventure game where you try to escape from/save a space station that's about to go into the sun. It was confusing and hard as hell but it was pretty neat.

And it's been mentioned but I just wanted an excuse to post the PAL cover:

Open world spyhunter, essentially.
OMG so fucking THIS!!

I've been trying to remember the name of this game for years now. I had so much fun with this back in the day. I randomly thought about it a few years back, but for the life of me, could not remember the name of this bad boy.

A lot of people didn't bother to read the fucking thread.

Eh, I always thought Destruction Derby was lesser known. Any, these have been mentioned already, but DiscWorld, Bushido Blade and Blazing Dragons were great.

KINGSLEY's ADVENTURE

The game is similar to The Legend of Zelda series, in the sense that players are given a quest and have to explore certain areas of the game's overworld using a sword and a crossbow (both being upgradeable during the adventure). Young knight Kingsley, a fox swordsman, is sent to protect the Fruit Kingdom from warlock Bad Custard. The game starts with a cutscene of a puppet show where dark fruit is shown attacking the Fruit Kingdom, then it shows Kingsley; the main character the player controls. This, along with the ending scene, are the only cutscenes in the game.

LOVED this game

The suspicious thing about this, and maybe I'm missing something, is that the Nintendo official magazine is saying that this Playstation-exclusive game is the Mario killer.

That sure is some liberal quoting by the good folks at GT Interactive...
40 Winks came out for the N64 aswell, but why the heck would they say "Move over Mario"?

40 Winks was superhyped to become THE Mario killer when it was announced

Jumping Flash was great, the Die Hard 3 car driving game is impossible and I wish I had Alien Trilogy back in the days

This thread is fantastic. I still can't believe someone already mentioned D! D! I loved that game so much that I would have bought Panasonics M2 because of D2 for it.

Also Alundra was pretty well known

It evolved into Invizimals. Which rather than using CDs uses colour detection technology, but is more focused on battles than raising the creatures.

Besides, Tecmo would probably give Swezo boob physics or something.

ooo, just remembered 2 that i literally sunk YEARS into:

It was like garage band before garage band, also music 3000 on the ps2 was fantastic.

I'm trying to order Duke Nukem and Nightmare Creatures for PS1 off Amazon UK, but since Norway isn't covered by the Amazon Marketplace, they can't be shipped to my address, fffffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuu~ :(

So agreed. The Tenchu Game on XBLA is CLOSE in idea to TG as well, and I really wished it got a following, because I'd love a TG re-release with online play :(

The Unholy War
A turn-based strategy game that turned into an action game once two units fought. It was incredibly awesome. My first avatar on this forum was actually the Mantis unit from this game, kept it for a couple of years..
Gameplay

I'll always remember the guy on the speedbike, who'se ultimate move was to fly into the air, cooly say "OK baby, here I come!" and kamikaze-dive towards the opponent. Fantastically cheesy and dramatic!

Destrega

Zero divide

Oh yeah! I love how Destrega had hidden costumes that turned the characters into Dynasty Warriors characters. (Based off the PS1 3D fighter designs.)

And Zero Divide... how can noone have the "Game over!" line online? "I can't believe you're giving up so soon! You're such a BABY! GO HOME TO YO MAMMAAA!"

And the fact that they hid Phalanx (Was it the full game) with an awesome new soundtrack on the disk, was excellent.

Really, I love that Stage 1 Theme!

Silent Bomber is still even fun now. It'd be fantastic to see a game like that, with a next-gen destruction engine... was great how the soldiers victory line in VS mode was "You'll pay for what you did to our buddies!"

I didn't get to play this until YEARS later, but man, it's such an awesome Guardian Heroes - a like, lol. The game felt a lot deeper than I expected, and controlled wonderfully.

Suprised someone else remembered this! Great Co-Op play, and was much more fun than I'd have expected when first played. Loved all the special moves and character personality.

Guess I'll add a few of my own:

rakugai_showtime_web_a.jpg

Also didn't get to play this until years later, but it's so over-the-top... The kinda thing I could imagine playing right alongside the best of the Bomberman series.

Soukaigi_cover.jpg

I remember enjoying this... but having no idea what was going on, lol.

omega_boost_front.jpg

Since I had the import, SHADE always gone to mind when I think of the game. It wa awesome going to war with an armada of battleships that just space-folded into your immediate location... A better Macross than most Macross games.
Not gonna bother wasting time listing Tobal No. 1 and 2... Really enjoyed them. A great RPG/Fighter Mashup, I really enjoyed the bonus modes they kinda shared with Ehergiez.

Oh... can't forget:

I have been trying to figure out the name of this game for years! I played it once like 11 years ago and I've been trying to figure out the name of it ever since as I'd love to try it again.

As for a lesser known game that I loved, would Wild Arms 2 count? That was and still is one of my favorite games of all time.

This was fun too. Apocalyptic shit.

I've never beaten the 2nd mission in C-12 and I didn't like FF2 :/

My picks:
15g808j.jpg

Like Resident Evil, but with a cooler story. Great narrative in which you're exposed only step-by-step into what's going on starting with trying to find out who and where you are. Only reading the manual actually spoils some of the fun already.
.

Really liked this game until I hit a wall where I couldn't go forward because I didn't have the medicine to heal yourself or something, on disc 3.

It had a sequel too on PS2 that was pretty good too, I hear, I haven't played it though.

Thread done. One of the best most underrated PS1 games. I would day one a sequel of any kind, and consider it to be the original powerstone. My friends and I played this tons, make it 4 player and add more characters and stages, it'd be AMAZING. The level design outclasses all of the other arena fighter type games by a country mile, and the controls/abilities for each character were pretty innovative. Jaeger was unstoppable though.

I rented this game at least 4 or 5 times and played it to death in the time I had it. I should've just bought it, and I kind of regret not doing so now. I really had a lot of fun with it.

Is there any other game out there like this one?

This one is probably just rare in retrospect, I don't remember it being especially obscure at the time. Nobody ever talks about it these days though.

Whatever happened to Gex? I put a lot of time into this game as a teenager!
Has anyone seen Fox Mulder's sister?

That's to this day my Favorite Snowboarding game. The only one that ever really came close to it for me was the first Amped on Xbox.

Good pick. Blew the pants off of Cool Boarders back in the day.
