Let us think up some new Xbox Live features and share them - 2008 GAF edition

A game clock for each game played. I'd love to know how many hours I've wasted on Gears and Halo. And I don't just want daily totals, ala what the Wii message board does, but rather LTD game time.

Joke post? Clippy? That thing sucked.
Hey now, Clippy was awesome.

Every one of my suggestions has been listed, but to reiterate them:

1) Clan support. I'm honestly very surprised this wasn't made a higher priority.
2) Multi-party chat in the Dashboard. Not in-game, just expand the chat options to 16. If game lobbies can do it, it shouldn't be an issue.
3) Zune and Xbox marketplace merging. Transfer content between devices.
4) Gifting. See the Wii implementation? Rip it off shamelessly.

I agree with Ghaleon, although I don't really care about clan support.

I would also like to import my own gamer picture. Being able to convert gamerpoints into XBL points would be awesome. And as it has been said before, I'm paying $50...what the fuck is with all the ads?

Web browser and RSS reader (with podcast support so I can automatically download Major Nelson, 1up yours etc.)

Yeah, I suspect lots of people don't remember that. Just to be clear, what I'm asking for is not in-game multi-party chat. What I'm asking for is MP chat in the dashboard. I've piled into a Halo lobby just to chat with more than one friend at a time. Take that exact same experience and integrate it into the dashboard so we don't all have to fire up a game.

Someone explain the DRM problem to me.

I guess I never had to deal with it.
if: your 360 dies and is replaced in-store or you have more than one 360 or you bought content on another 360 or you bought an elite to replace your core/premium

you can't play XBLA games, use addon content you bought, use themes or gamerpics you bought, unless you're logged into xbox live, and other profiles can't use them at all

doesn't really explain why there can't be multi-party chat in the dashboard, which i imagine is what most people would want anyway. if you can have it in game lobbies, there's 0 reason not to have it outside of games.

i want more community features.

i want sharing of playback data, and the ability to view it -- even if you don't own the game. (obviously recording videos of some sort. i hear WMVs work ;) ) i think gold users should get more space to share these sorts of things and they should always be available. why should people have to go through so much to record some little video, put it on one of the streaming websites, and then share it with friends? this should work for screenshots, the halo 3 custom game types, and all sorts of other things. even if you didn't convert to videos, it'd still be cool to easily have access to this all the time from the dashboard.

Playing With ... -- i want more details on what my friends are doing in game. sometimes i'm trying to see if certain friends are playing in the same multiplayer game, so i can make decisions about which to join, but the viewable data sometimes isn't sufficient to tell. it'd be nice if i could pull up a list of people they're playing with (obviously giving the user the ability to disable this too, like FoF)

i want ALL GAMES to check for open ports, and if the users machine has open ports and they attempt to find a match, and none is currently available, that they default to listening mode, otherwise the XBL servers ping them when someone else wants to play. none of this "search again" bullshit.

game sharing -- much like the DS & GBA. allow games to send say a level or two to your friends who don't own the game, so they can play online with you.

allow users to also stream lower quality versions of the music their listening to. have this be a separate channel so users can opt out of it. this would be nice for group chat too.

gamertag badges -- in addition to achievements, allow certain people to get medals or awards to display in their profiles for participating in certain events and achieving something. say for example, placing in the top 50 in some competition, or even just top 10? these are the kinds of things achievements really seem made for. 'playa badge -- game with fame -- beat dr. dre in PGR4 on 12/12/2007'

community associations and lists -- similar to clans, but the ability to associate yourself to forums and gain little flags or whatever. then you can browse everyone from these communities online when you go to invite. Messages / Friends / Communities / Recently Played ... then i can see all the people online who are a member of the neogaf community and play with them. also when they sign on, it'd be cool if their associations were also shown. if memory is a concern, they can be shown with 3-4 letter abbreviations, like the clan tags. this could help clean up friends lists and avoid some of the hate on XBL by playing with people you like. there's tons of specialized gaming communities on the web, like for religions, females, gays, etc.

(seriously, the network testing in the 360 is nice, but it'd be nice to have some testing features for bandwidth and such. letting people host games in COD4 who appear to have 64kbps connections is silly. sure, accurately detecting the bandwidth speed is a pita, but if the xbl servers have problems sending or receiving so much data in a certain period of time, so will other users)

-Up to 200friends. And categorize them.
-Make XBLA games free to play online, I want the entire thing free, but I can understand a bit why they aren't doing to it. But lets take some steps here either way.
-Increase XBLA Size limit to 300megs.
-Group support, 8 group chat(hosted by one of the members)
-Connect the Xbox site to the game. The forums for games and such. Info, etc.

other profiles can only used them if you're logged in. so, as an example, if both of you log in, you can play them. i have to do this with my oblivion content and for my nephews if they want to play my xbla arcade games.

Something I threw together as an example of a clan blade:

clanbladev2.jpg

Obviously my Photoshop skills leave a lot to be desired, but it works as an example as to what would be nice.

The clan chat option would bring up a list of current clan members online and you could send a chat invite to each member you click on. This would require group chat, obviously.

The three boxes underneath would change depending on which three games currently have the most clan members playing, with the number in the corner representing how many players are playing that particular game.

The third, "Manage Clan Roster," would appear the same to each member in the clan, but once clicked would offer different options depending on what rank you currently hold in the clan. For lower ranked members, the only options available might be to "tag" notes onto other clan members, viewable only to you - little notes like "Ghaleon from GAF" or "loves to co-op Gears". For higher ranked members, more options would be available, namely the ability to promote/demote other members.

I'll to get "Browse Community Clan Listings" at the end.

Below that is a clan mailbox, for sending out mass messages to all members, or just messages to members of a certain rank.

"Clan Members Online" is just what it sounds like.

The calendar on the right is editable by all members (or members at or above a certain rank), and it appears the same to all members. It's just an easy way to organize games or to set dates for tournaments or clan matches.

Beneath the calendar is your clan logo - how you could actually import this, I don't know. Maybe you would just be given a small area in which you could "paint" - assign this task to the artist of your clan. And this would obviously fall under the same ToS rules that apply to the Vision camera. To the right of that is your clan name, along with the total member amount and the total number of clan "wins (see below)."

I can't think of any way that the 360 could keep track of "clan matches." Since no games currently have any type of clan functionality, I don't know how easy or hard it would be create a system that can keep track of "official clan matches." It would be nice to be able to pull up the dashboard before a game and enter the opposing clan's name, at which point a notification would appear on that clan leader (or highest ranking member currently online)'s screen signifying that they have a challenge awaiting (this could come up in the clan mailbox, viewable to all, but acceptable only by leader or highest ranking member currently online). At the end of the next game between these two clans, a win or loss would be recorded and issued to each team.

"Browse Community Clan Listings" would bring up a list of all clans on Xbox Live (perhaps all clans that have an "allow public listing" option set). Each clan would have a set of notes attached to it (each of which the clan has the ability to set to private or publicly viewable) - clan motto, clan leader, whether or not the clan is accepting new members, whether or not the clan is accepting challenges, total clan wins/losses, or any other number of cool statistics/information.

As cool as the wins/losses thing would be, I realize that it would probably be impossible to do, since no games currently have clan functionality.

Anyway, just a few ideas that I would love to see. Are you listening, MS? Are you LISTENING?

I want a fun little character to help me a long with my Xbox live experience. There was one in another Microsoft product, I cannot remember his name though...

more community features on their website would be a plus too

Blinx revived! :lol

Either make it free or kill those ads. Or both, like Sony.
More Xbox Originals. I thought we would be getting them weekly.
Downloadable MP3s. And since you're a game company, throw some game music up there. SoTN and Sonic 360 would be nice choices. Oh, and let us rip them to CD? Thanks.

Universal parties are my main wish. Let us get a group together on the dashboard and jump into a COD4 game together, then all move to Halo 3 or whatever without having to separate and fuck around with invites.

Admittedly this might be beyond the scope of a dash update, but if making Halo's party an open API for developers would make it possible, do it. Group private chat might be the next best thing as we wouldn't have to break communication.

The web browser would be nice. I could justify buying that mini keyboard for my 360 controller if it had one.

Which would in theory draw users away from using Internet Explorer, thereby lowering it's marketshare. Won't happen.

Be able to have more than 6 items in your download queue, like 15.

6-way video group chat.

PS3 does both. I'd like it on 360.

Honestly now. Who in the world does this? For that matter, who even wants this? 6-way video chat seems more like a PR bullet point than a feature that anyone would actually give a damn about.

Give me FF and Rewind buttons for the audio player. I can't believe it's freakin' 2008 and we still don't have something that simple already implimented. This is something that should've been rectified on day one, imo.

I've only been using live for a little bit but I would put in

- friends categorisation
- not having my background downloads paused when games connect to the net
- better marketplace organisation
- ability to use any usb webcam

i want a "best friends" feature. When I have 20 friends online and quickly want to invite my mate i have to scroll all the way down to S to invite him, and then if he is offline its an 80 person scroll down. Id like to have about 5 slots at the top to give to best friends so it overwrote alphabetical order and let me see my closest friends first.

i want to be able to set nicknames for people on my friends list, especially people from gaf where their usernames are different to their gamertags (myself included)

i want to be able to open to the friends list directly from the guide button, i use my friends list alot more than i use any option on the in game guide, so usually pressing the guide button is just a long way to get to my friends list
