We went a WHOLE PAGE without this shit? Slipping GAF, slipping.

The revolution would not have succeeded without French aid. They sent armies and fleets to help complete the victory. Really, it was a war between England on one side and France and the colonies on the other.

I'd add the Germans/Hessians to Britain's side of the table, they were major players even if they weren't really involved in the deep enmity between Britain and France that played a part in France's entry.

The American Revolution is one of those moments in history where there are truly shades of grey. The conflict is romanticized to the point of comicalness.

American history books try to paint the colonists in a good light, when in reality, they were just as bad, if not worse than the red coats and loyalists. Is there an equivalence of fault here? Maybe...it depends on one's perspective and what one values as important or evil.

At the end of the day, the colonists won, for better or worse, on a flawed and outright hypocritical stance on Freedom...if you were white, 21, male, and owned property.

It's a shame that the Tea Party of today's political world has no idea what the Tea Party of the Late 18th century actually stood for.

The colonies were hardly out of step with much of the world at that point.

Crown loyalty is overated?

Except Crown Royal. But that's my Korean talking.

Not sure what you're looking for in the thread...

In my opinion, the war was on of the most impactful in the past 500 years.
While many people think it was all due to the American colonists being badass, the truth is that many countries, such as the netherlands, Spain and France helped the US tremendously by supplying them secretly at first. Though all of the help put France in major debt and ruined their economy (thanks dude!).

It was not as popular of a decision to declare independence as one might think. There were plenty of loyalists in the colonies, and they would fight for the British.

We didn't have any kind of radical revolution truthfully. Not like the French Revolution, or the Bolsheviks. However, the mere fact that the American colonists basically uprised because of the British Empire's constant bullshit had such an impact on the future of many countries, its crazy. It was a "revolutionary revolution" so to speak. Many countries modeled their own governments after ours was formed. This was the first time a colony had rebelled and successfully asserted its rights to self-government and nationhood. This inspired many European nations and colonies to revolt.

Read a book called "The Glorious Cause" some years ago that was a historical style novel about the revolution. I think it's written by the guy that did Killer Angels or his son maybe. Anyway, I remember liking it. I think Washington got really lucky a couple times, his army should have been annihilated more than once.

If I remember right at the battle of New York the continental army was in bad bad shape, and only escaped cause a freakish thick fog settled just as they needed to retreat. Crazy stuff like that.

Also Liberty or Death that old Koei game on SNES was pretty awesome and I know a ton of names of figures involved because of that game... even if I don't know all their roles :P
