Yes, @Danjin44 makes plenty of good threads. And he's making some good points — there's less discussion about actual video games (you know, and the joy of playing them) than there are "shiny plastic box wars" posts. I really don't have any criticisms of NeoGaf except I wish they were slightly tougher on console war posts. Evilore suggested, and I think he was right, that there should be more focus on creating official threads (which by the way take a lot of work) need to be made more often and posting needs to be encouraged therein.

I'm totally with Danjin44, as someone who's been on the forums for 7 or so years — the best times here, people and topic wise, were the result of strictly moderated discussion guidelines that encouraged discussion about games without personal attacks or system wars nonsense. But, the old moderation team went WAY TOO FAR, became politically and ideologically obsessed, totalitarian assclowns who ruined the forum ultimately. And since those moderators set the tone for the discussion, all of the posters become SJW assholes.

So I think there's a sweet spot to still be attained — create and foster a strictly moderated (not but politically biased) environment that encourages thoughtful discourse and a mature, passionate community.

That's a fair assessment. I've leaned heavily on course correction from the previous problems and would rather err on being too light with moderation than too heavy-handed, but I've nudged us toward the middle ground more this year in response to console warring getting out of hand at times.

I joined NeoGaf back in the day after a decade+ on IGN as a user and eventually a moderator. The consolidated forum structure just led to more active discussions and while the rule sets were more adult oriented, the stricter moderation was appealing in that bad actors were quickly shown the door. I do think that rigid moderation was a slippery slope that led to the site only letting one side of the argument have a voice and eventually the exodus so I get why that type of moderation was paired back in this iteration of GAF. You also have to consider that the user base is growing (regrowing?) so stiffing posters probably isn't the best course of action right now. On the one hand I do wish some of the more obvious trolling stuff was corralled a bit, but on the other hand it's not that serious and I like how goofy we can be here. And while I don't agree with some of the over arching tones found here, I'd rather those views be able to be expressed and engaged. Maybe we all might just learn something from one another.

edit; And EviLore EviLore posted my word salad much more elegantly. You win this round.

We're in pretty good shape. The only thing we need is to step up with games discussions and official thread creation going into the new generation, to balance out news and console warring. You can help by volunteering for official thread creation and covering games that haven't gotten their own OTs yet.

You are ok with console warring?

I thought you were going to weed it out with moderation once forum picks up.

I don't think there is any discussion to be had when everything boils down to the same thing.

It is all appreciated. Everyone has an opinion, but literally nobody would want to be in the big seat, caught inbetween the specter of everything that happened, and also trying to maintain order while two new consoles and a major PC part launch.

Sometimes I feel like we have the equivalent of 'first world problems' on Gaf. People, including me, get angsty about stuff like the console warring, while sites like Reddit and Reset have people just trying to get a word out without stepping on any toes and getting banned. We really, really have it good here.

You were doing well until everyone died.

There are people who have talent for that, like MiyazakiHatesKojima MiyazakiHatesKojima , I'm not one of them and I'm just not really in to making clickbait threads.

The fact is most of the games I'm in to just don't have mass appeal, making clickbait thread is really not going to do much to change that.

It doesn't matter, write stuff you're passionate about and don't think too much about appealing to other people (don't try and push your point of view down their throat), because people who are also interested in what you're saying will organically be attracted to what you're writing. You're thinking way too much about this, relax.

I agree that there's a flood of threads revolving around silly topics with no incentive to post in. That's because there are a lot of enthusiasts which are hyped about the approaching release of the next generation, so they're going to gobble up any bit of information concerning that and share it here, regardless whether or not it's sparking engaging discussions or not. And enthusiasts hyped about different stuff are going to collide. And that collision results in shitty posts.

While I personally think the forum needs less unprompted anti-SJW jokes and comments because they're at best boring and at worst give the site a worse reputation, that's more of a personal preference and I can always use the ignore feature.

What I see as an actual problem is people posting shitty scandal-bait articles from shitty click-hungry sites who see 3 tweets saying some bullshit and write an article about it. Instead of letting things that don't deserve to be read die the death they deserve, they're clicked and viewed and the other side comes in to rage and it keeps going. People let themselves be manipulated by it, and it's clear as day but people don't learn because they only see red. This isn't Facebook, this is GAF. We're better than that.

Make GAF great again and you don't even have a face.
Don't you get it young man/woman whatever you are... I can't have a face. I'm not strong enough to take on the burden of change. That's why I write long monologs for people like you. You are the future. You are the change. NOW GO!!! FLY AWAY AND SPREAD THE MESSAGE!!! You can do it Kadayi Kadayi ..

I believe in you

I made you an avatar.

Everyone may I have your attention. I have broken free from the shackles of the default (blue?) M. I am reborn like a fucking phoenix, not any phoenix, but a phoenix who is grabbing Mark Walhbergs cock. Thank you bender bender . I would shake your hand but it's full at the moment.

I much prefer the console warring over the cringe political threads about trans people and other forms of mod sanctioned bigotry...

So I say, let's continue the console wars!

Xbox sucks 😂

I mean, just create a thread about a game you care about.
But don't expect the whole world to revolve around your point of view and the things you like.

Also, I feel with threads around that get 1000 posts in 24 hours it's easy to feel that your thread about something more obscure doesn't get enough response with only 100 posts in all, when in reality it wouldn't get much more than that on "specialist forums" as well.

It's really cool here, but sometimes it might lead to a bit skewed view on what's important and what's not FOR YOURSELF.

It's okay that all this tech talk exists when a new console gen is imminent, and it's okay when there are 8 threads on the first page about TLOU2 when this is one of the biggest games of this gen.

It's become increasingly less enjoyable as we get closer to the new console launches. Feels like I'm back in middle school at this point.

Great? It's going to be AWESOME when the Digital Foundry face offs start dropping.

Also all the bell ends are over at Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee so what's not to love?

(mostly) preventing retarded console warring is the only thing REEEE does better than this forum. If you don't want to moderate it, at least quarantine it into its own section.

Half these problems are solvable by yourself though. Old GAF boards didn't have ignore features, ignore threads. I ventured into politics properly this week for a bit. It's not hard to just scroll past something even if it's an insult to yourself or someone else. Next gen is on ignore for me now. No users are though. Everyone just needs to shrug shit off and get on with it.

It's tough making threads that only get a few replies - but don't make threads to get replies, just use them to make a point or be informative. People still google and end up here in the future anyway. GAF already has picked up the main headlines of gaming again which is a massive improvement. Technical discussion does get derailed which is why I hang on b3D as well. But not may tech threads here created by MS or Sony fans are actually about Tech, they're just disguised 'Look at what my plastic box has and look at what marketing have called it', there's very little discussion on how it works or what it means and then it just decsends into well Xbox also has this feature called xxxx and Sony also has that service called yyyy

That's a salient point. Confrontation with shit you would have rather not read hardens you and distinguishes you from the folk that cries about everything but revels in adding to their ignore lists.

I half agree with the OP. There is a fair amount of people being overly hateful/whiney/tribal/religious and it would be nice to thin that out a little bit. This is what the internet is today, and GAF is probably better than most places in some respects.

I do get annoyed by the people who attack devs for artistic choices or shit all over something they haven't played. If it weren't for these people working their asses off in an industry that will flush half of them down the toilet without thinking about it. When I see some of the vitriol here, and across other fandoms, it just pisses me off. Constructive criticism is fine, but ripping on things that people put all of their energy into for years because it doesn't align with your politics, or because it is not on 'your' system, or because the sequel was not like the one you imagined, or whatever. I think the sillies bickering is the Epic store. People going apeshit over having to use a different launcher while a company is trying to bring some competition into the market. FFS clicking on another launcher is much better than switching inputs, grabbing a different input device and playing a game on a console.

If you don't like something, move on. Don't keep trashing it while others are trying to share their enjoyment of it online.

Sony and Nintendo suck though. They make me buy an expensive console just to play their exclusives when I would prefer to play the games on my PC.

The difference between 6 months ago and now is very noticable. Gaf is obviously picking up a lot of new traffic (guess from banned reee people). It's great to see the comeback is fully underway.

Cry more!!!

I already know I'm gonna catch shit for the title but oh well. Gotta have a sense of humor. It's nothing literal.

We are in the midst of a new generation, not only on consoles, but on PC as well. That's fucking exciting!! This is the best time to be a gamer. New consoles!!! New generation of graphic technologies on PCs!!! Why are we dogging each other out!!!

Honestly, it's not as fun as it used to be on here. The social media/Facebook/Twitter mentality of "I believe this and fuck everyone who thinks differently" has infested this community. We should be excited about the future of gaming. We should not give two fucks what someone else is going to game on. There is going to be a platform for everyone. Buy what you like. Don't worry about what other people like.

There are a lot of unanswered questions about the upcoming consoles but you know what? In like a month we will know all the answers. Game and chill.

I know this shit is gonna get buried in about 10 minutes but man... I just wanted to give this off my chest. If I pissed you if on here in they past, I'm sorry. I'm just as guilty as the next guy. I'll be better.

P.s. Xbox fans are pussies :messenger_beaming:

Maybe wash your right hand first then we can talk.

Yeah piling on the gaf is already great without the crazies love

don't get too attached to your boxes people it's gonna be a buffet of gaming this gen on all platforms so strap on your preferred pronouns your gonna have a great time

it sucks seeing politics blend into the gaming section. neogaf is better when the discussion is focused around games, sans console warring.
