Lets really talk about the Vita PSONE emulator

I don't think there is anyone in the world that could say with a straight face that this has anything to do with any kind of tech limitation, or with the manhours ($$) it would take to accomplish. (We all know the system has a PSP emu, I'm sure the PSone emu could run inside it and still be full speed)

So I think we all know what the real deal is here. Square (and other companies, and even some of the software arms of SONY intself) are all of a sudden realizing that they are not going to be able to constantly port their back catalog with premium prices. They are realizing that as soon as PSONE goes live on Vita, I have 20 new games to add to my new system, that I am not going to have to pay an additional dime for.

I think that Sony has realized that giving you rights to these games for all of their platforms forever may have been a mistake, but were they to make me rebuy the licences at this point, for my Vita, I think they realize that they would have a major, major, major PR issue on their hands.

Also, the lack of certain PSP games that work on Vita, (Valk Chronicles, etc) but aren't available in the store is curious and I can't really figure it out. I guess SEGA really really doesn't want people who have already paid for it on PSP downloading it again on their VITA for free. (I'm aware there is a pain in the ass workaround that requires a PS3, but, c'mon)

ALL OF THIS IS CONJECTURE and opinion. Please, educate me if necessarily.

Yeah, because Sony isn't already having issues showing how much value is a Vita is so they should totally not let you carry over your existing PS1 game collection...

I think you're impatient.

Joke post? I'm not freaking out or being impatient, OR saying I need it now. What am I being impatient about?

I'm just pointing out that really, really, if you look at it, the only possible reason we don't have it is backroom financial bullshit, and that is annoying, and a worrying sign for the future of my Sony digital rights.

So explain again how I'm impatient?

While you're at it, maybe you should explain how your post was constructive in any way.

Because of the crazy conspiracy theories I just read.
I think we'll hear more next month when the new firmware update is dropped.

I am kind of baffled at how badly Sony is dropping the ball with the Vita's digital distribution strategy, especially given how excellent their strategy has been on PS3 and PSP.

I don't know what specific reason they're holding it back, but it probably does have more to do with money than it does with any technical reason. It's probably more likely that Sony has to renegotiate with all the publishers with PSOne titles so they can be distributed on Vita. When most of them were put up on the service, there was probably nothing in the agreement about the Vita, so now they have renegotiate all that shit.

They really need to get this DD shit worked out, and starting thinking ahead more than 6 months. It should've been part of all contracts that they would gain rights to distribute on all current, and future DD platforms a part of Playstation Network for X amount of years or something.

I really wish they could hurry up though, I only have one digital psp game since I've bought all my other ones on UMD but I have a ton of PS1 games that I could play.

You think it's "Crazy" that Square would start balking that they are not going to be able to resell FF 7-8-9 ever again to any of the people that bought them to play on their PS3, on any Sony device ever, and Sony pulled the PSone emulator until they figured out a way to make the companies that own the back catalogs happy?

Wow, you have some broad definition of crazy.

Better hurry the fuck up I got 6 FF games a couple of RE games and some shit waiting on my PS3.

Also none of my Mini's work on the Vita so wtf is up with that shit as well Sony.

This whole situation is pretty ridiculous.

Is it really? Sony has said they they're working on it and it's coming soon. The system has only been out for 3 months. I certainly didn't buy a Vita just to play PSone games.

I know it's not really feasible... but having a ps2 emulator in vita would be a pretty huge sell point.

Just pick up a cheap psp at this point if ya want ps1 games on the go!

Or just jailbreak your ios device or get the emulator on android.

btw: how do ps1 games look on vita's high res screen?

I didn't either, but since I currently only own a Vita, but not a PS3 or PSP, I'm really bummed that I can't really take advantage of the sale on PS1 FF games right now. I'd love to have been able to get FF5, 6 and 7 for their current price and play em on my Vita, but because they're dragging their feet on that crap, I can't :(

Yes, my horrible downported version of PacMan CE is apparantly way too taxing for the Vita.

Also convenient that the PSP games they gave me for free (pursuit force, resistance) cannot be downloaded to my Vita at this time as well.

You can buy them with Media Go no?
Then transfer when the eventual update is released.

The fact that we have no timetable for something that should have been settled before the system released? Yes.

Ehh, sony's digital strategy finally came together 2 years ago. Before then they were totally wasting the psn's potential. Now we have a great library of psp and ps3 games, but for a while there PSN was kind of useless. I think Sony is very slow to catch up sometimes, things like ps1 compatibility should've been day 1 features on the vita.

You'll be doing plenty of foot-dragging if you try to play the PS1 ports of FFV and VI.

Well, you could buy them right now on the PC/Mac, right? Though purchasing them now is assuming they'll run on the Vita and assuming that the OP's conspiracy theory won't be true about re-purchasing the games again.

Some did on this forum said Vita will support PS2 games and he was sure about it

Yeah, I feel like I can't really argue with that. This seems to be a recurring problem with game consoles lately when they launch. They launch missing key features which would be selling points. The 3DS had a time table for some of this stuff, but I still found it ridiculous how it launched and they said "And these features are coming in 2-3 months" The Vita was worse, because we are missing a lot of key features with the Vita that I would like in there. Outside of PSOne games, I wish PS3 friends actually saw me online when I was playing my Vita.

That's certainly an interesting point of view, although perhaps a bit cynical.

It's actually a really big deal to me that the Vita can play PS1 games, and I don't think I can buy one without knowing that it will be coming. I'm sure they have reasons for it, but I doubt it's anything quite as greedy as simply wanting to sell us the games again.

PSX games sell for quite a price on PSN, considering the age of the games and that they are digital copies. I paid £7.99 each for FF7 -9, Metal Gear Solid also.

I think they would be quite happy with the money they already make from them frankly.

I didn't buy my PC just to play classic games, so if anything before 2000 disappeared from my steam library and I was told they are "working on it", I'm sure both myself and the rest of GAF would be totally cool with it!!

*eyeroll*

I don't think it's that ridiculous. What's more ridiculous is that the entire PSP/minis PSN catalog doesn't work on Vita. And some games that run in Japan (like Pixeljunk Monsters Deluxe) don't even run on a US Vita.

Seems like something that should have been included at launch. It's not like Sony hasn't known they were going to be releasing the Vita for like the past 2 years, nor is it like this would be the first time anyone has ever written a PS1 emulator. In fact, Sony should be the most competent at writing the emulator, they have all the specs, have an emulator currently on at least 3 platforms, and have multiple source codes to work from.

Vita not being able to play PS1 games day 1 is purely incompetence, which should kind of be expected of Sony by now.

I'm pretty sure not all games before 2000 work on your PC either

Only thing I agree with here.
That's the only head scratcher.

More than likely, the delay is because they won't be reusing the PSone emulator from the PSP, but are finalising the PS Suite emulator. Then Sony will only have one emulator to support across all new platforms.

I imaging PS Suite games will take over from Minis, and encompass not just PSone ROMs, but smaller iOS style games. Be available on both Vita and Android at the same time.

I think it'll be funny if they pull a PS3, except with PS1 games.

Also, being able to play PS1 games but not PS2 games on a PS3 is just weird.

Its the precedent. I think they know that they people who already bought them on PS3/PSP are the ones most likely to go out and buy a Vita, therefore they are worried the revenue stream they were counting on from back catalog sales will plummet in the next generation.

Only digitally downloaded ISO's. Just the discs don't work.

and they wonder why the hackers go after them so hard, sheesh.
