Lets reminisce over Red Dead Redemption

Things I want in the sequel:

Nature is as menacing as outlaws. Tornadoes, flash floods, no fast travel, incredibly large world with tons of wildlife.

RPG mechanics from San Andreas/GTA V. Hunger would exist, stamina is dependent on weather or heat, your horse riding skills get better the more you ride (faster aiming when on horseback, can get a horse to higher speeds).

Max Payne 3 aiming and combat mechanics. Two weapons only, knife, lasso/whip.

yes yes yes yes yes no

I normally get bored of open sandbox games quick but seeing the bandits/gunfights first time heading to town and witnessing a shootout...animals that you could butcher skin...wild horses...the lasso....

ahhh..so much good in the game and it's just the small little things

Best western game on the market. It's not even a contest. If they could do that with an IP like Read Dead, I would really like to see what an in-house developed LA Noire sequel could become.

That is the best bet when it comes to legit prequel/sequel.

Disenfranchised confederate soldier, fed up with fighting for a cause that went nowhere, decides to fight for himself, to build something he can control, a vision that is his own. Red Dead Revolution. You eventually mentor a young outlaw, known as Dutch. When the empire you built eventually goes to shit, Dutch puts the main character down.

That would be awesome. Get to see young Dutch in his prime.

Absolutely love this game, I remember buying some DLC and trying to get the Liar's Dice Achievement.

I ended up getting into an hour long game of Liar's Dice where I actually won with one die and got both of the achievement's for it. So much damn fun.

edit: For anyone that's ever been in a multiplayer lobby...
I KILL ALL YOU SONS OF BITCHES

One of the trophies is called "In a van down by the river" and it's something like - win a hand of poker on the last card when you were losing prior. I remember thinking it would be very hard to get. One night I convinced two friends to play poker and there was a fourth player I didn't know. My two friends quickly grew tired of playing and went all in just to get it over with, I went all in too just for the heck of it, the stranger kept most of his chips. Anyway that was the hand that I won the trophy "In a van down by the river"
I had 8000+ chips and the other guy had less than 2000 and I ran the show from there on out.

Good times. Reminds me of a dark and empty dorm room, Cool Ranch Doritos and Diet Mountain Dew.

I'm down for this too.

Undead Nightmare made me so nervous often, you never know what would attack you any second.

ALSO, I LOVED finding the Horses of the Apocalypse out in the wild (without having to use a strategy guide) to find them. I just so happen to stumble on them in my travels.

I liked it overall but I felt that the story was incredibly underwhelming, considering the cool setup. You play as John Marston, a former outlaw that has to seek out and murder his old gang, but yet it felt like you were just pissing around in the desert doing errands for idiots. And nothing really happened until the end and then it was wrapped up in a couple of minutes (or at least it felt so to me).

I'll comment on this and the "Far Away" thread. Goddamn amazing game. It had a fantastic setting that has rarely been exploited by video games. I also love the last moment, it was really well done.

where is my PC version Rockstar, its not rocket science damn it

I like it but not to the point that everyone else seems to.

Would get RDR2 if they made it, but like i said, enjoyable but nothing blew me away.

I only got a ps3 a few months ago, and rdr was one of my prime motivators in getting one (just pc gaming before).
I completed the game a couple of weeks ago and I am still struggling to coherently describe what I feel about the game. Overall I think it was outstanding, the art direction, clever sparse use of music and interesting ending come together to make a game that was incredibly impactful. The ending left me feeling totally bereft and empty (this is a good thing - great that a game has that impact.) I love the scene where you are riding home to see your family and a song kicks in - was I imaging things or did your horse run faster?
The overall plot or mission structure was a bit stupid, superimposing the traditional gta style, characters giving out random missions, did not match up well with the deeper story they were aiming for.
I agree that the game could really do with a HD remaster. The art direction is great and I can appreciate that it was a technical achievement on the console hardware available at the time, but coming from primarily gaming on pc, the graphical issues with this game are very jarring. I am still completely bemused as to why they didn't release this on pc.

No remastered ports please. I would rather wait for a proper sequel.

New Red Dead game on new gen would be amazing.

Struggled to get through this game at the time. While I did some side stuff like treasure hunting, I mostly tried to go from story mission to story mission. I never had any "Mexico sucks" experience because it went by pretty quickly running from one story mission to the next. It also gets very repetitive. As said by earlier posters, there's just a overall theme in Rockstar games (really, open world games in the GTA model) where you're always doing someone else's job for them, and are basically strung along by character after character in some kind of laterally-moving "rising up the ranks" story. The only real thing I can decide to do as a player is shoot up civilians when I feel like it. Or do some side-quests.

There are certainly some nice moments, it's an ambitious game, the shooting is the best Rockstar has ever done (have not played GTA5), killing animals is fun and stuff. There were some cool vistas and places to go.

I just found it annoyingly unsatisfying, and much like GTA4, I was forcing myself to finish the game because it was so well regarded. I hate how Rockstar's Euphoria engine makes characters unresponsive, I strongly dislike that they insist on making you tap the shit out of your A button to run... They even make you tap A to get your horse to an acceptable speed, for fucks sake. The whole game was me slowly contributing to what will likely be decades of hand pain later in life from carpal tunnel. As with many open world games, I didn't feel like the game respected my time as a player.

And the ending was nice, if I was watching a movie. Unfortunately, I was playing a game, where I watched my main character (ending spoilers)
get killed when confronted with a situation I could have easily handled in-game. I had gotten out of similar situations before in previous missions.
Rather than the end of something like Halo: Reach, where your agency as a player is respected, and when you get to the credits you feel like the game treated you fairly (the story situation is played out by the player). Red Dead Redemption just says "now is when this is supposed to happen in our story." Afterwards, playing as (post-ending spoilers)
his son allows you to get some revenge, but I mostly was taking revenge for the game deciding to murder John Marson without my consent
.

Just recently played and finished it.

It's a Rockstar game, the GTA pedigree shines through. Personally I hated the game. The gameplay is horrible and not challenging, yet deactivating that stupid auto-aim makes it completely impossible to finish.

The missions felt absolutely tedious to me. Run to A, accept mission, go to B and then continiue to C. The vast emptyness of the game area make these rides seem even more boring than they already are in other GTA/open world games.
Voice acting was stellar, the actuall story content though was mainly garbage.

Overall it also felt like the least polished Rockstar game I ever played, encountered numerous technical issues on PS3.

I really wanted to like this game and was actually slightly hyped in the pre-release phase, because it seemed to nail the western setting, but it's just too similar to GTA in terms of gamedesign, which made it completely unappealing to me. I was actually forcing my way through this game without any fun, just to asses the game ending, which in all honesty wasn't nearly as good as a lot of people and reviews made it sound.

A nice little surprise I got was after hog tying a lady who tries to get you robbed, I thought I would see what happens if I put her on the railway line.

Achievement Unlocked - 5g - Dastardly

Yeah, lets pretend I only did that for the achievement...

Fantastic game. Probably the best Wild West game of all time for me. Hopefully RDR3 is what R* is working on these days.

I bought the game with no prior knowledge , never saw videos etc and it blew me away

The videos R* released prior to the release were incredible. IRRC I think it set the new standard for a lot of todays trailers/teasers.

What do you mean by "slowed down"

You shot people for other people. Just like in the rest of the game.

Any time I see someone explain what they mean by this, they mention:

- Missions are unrelated to overall story. The entire first segment of the game involves doing missions for people that have nothing to do with Marston finding the members of his old gang. You're only doing favors for these people under the promise they'll help you. Killing people Nigel West Dickens was trying to swindle doesn't seem directly related to Marton's mission and it doesn't seem at all justifiable/congruous with Marston's character.

- Annoying/bad characters. Seth, Irish and West Dickens. What's annoying to one person might not be to another, to say the characters you meet in Mexico are somehow more annoying than these three you meet in the first third of the game is a tall claim. Their missions consist entirely of their idiocy causing problems for Marston. The player is supposed to believe that these fools are going to help him do something he couldn't do on his own.

- Boring/repetitive missions. The entire game consists of missions where you shoot people over and over. From beginning to end. While the first third of the game has a few more non-combat missions than the rest of the game, it still features plenty of the "go here, kill these people" missions.

- Characters leading the player on. This is essentially the entire premise of the game proper. You are running errands for people until they give you help/the information you want. It's not exclusive to Mexico at all.

These issues, alongside the fact that it felt entirely like a reskinned GTA, down to the minimap on the HUD and everything, are what made me dislike the game.

It wasn't until the final two hours
on the homestead
that I felt it found it's groove. Those two hours were great, but the rest of it was dull, dull, dull.

A real disappointment.

Yeah, agree with this, except that I liked the ending. A good ending to a terrible, terribly drawn out story.

Lovely game world coupled with usual weak ass R* missions and miss-matching themes and activities left right and centre.

A homage to the great Westerns that often strays into ripping them off at the same time it pays respects.

A ticking clock central plot you're free to ignore.

Yup usual R* bi-polar mixing of plot and do what you want they know sells like hot cakes.

Would love a current gen sequel - particularly if they actually delivered a consistent experience (which they wouldn't).

I like it a lot and find it annoying at the same time.

The game is also now on sale on PSN for 10 euro's the whole package. I am going to buy it again. Played it back on my 360 a lot with friends online in free roam soo mutch fun!

I agree with this. Except I couldn't make it to the ending, Mexico was just too boring to get through.

One of the best games of the past generation. Hope that Rockstar remasters this for PS4. Truely deserves the treatment.

Btw.: IMO Mexico was the best part of the game.

Two things I wanted for the longest time in gaming were a great open-world Western and a great open-world pirate game. While I'm still waiting for the latter (though ACIV came close in some areas), RDR scratched the Western itch perfectly. The game itself has flaws, but it gets the feel of what I want out of that genre so perfectly that it still stands out as one of my favorite games of last gen. I'm looking forward to what Rockstar does with the IP this gen.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I loved RDR because it payed homage to the great westerns. R* has payed homage to some of the Classic Hollywood genres (noir, gangster and westerns) I wonder what they'll go next?

So i guess any chance of this ever coming to PC is more or less dead now considering how long ago the game was released??

My sentiments as well. Fantastic tone and setting but I found the moment to moment gameplay dull as hell.

Loved it, crazy glitches and all.

One of my all-time favourite videogames. In my top 5, easily. I'd love a 1080p 60fps remaster. And I'd love a sequel even more.

Rockstar, pls.
