Lets talk about action RPGs or Lets talk about the best genre around

Mount & Blade still has my favourite combat even if it is very quite dated now and the animations are not exactly pleasant to look at. So satisfying though.

The thing I loved about Mount & Blade was actually the overworld and the potential it had for complex dynamic storytelling (in a true role-playing kind of way), and the way that interacted with combat. It wasn't fully realized, but I'd love for another game to expand upon that kind of broad kingdom-shaping alongside the RPG aspects and medieval combat. I haven't tried the mods, but I've heard great things.

Otherwise, every time I see a screenshot of D2 it makes me want to hop back on again. Such a fantastic game, and I agree that the genre is amazing. I think another one to add to the list of upcoming games is Lost Ark, if that lives up to its trailers it could be a blast.

Also, I've never heard of Below, and the atmosphere and music are both great. The trailer sucked me in immediately.

I really like Secret of Mana except for one critical flaw in its mechanics-- the enemy targeting being incredibly unfair. Half the time they don't need to be anywhere near you to hit you, and this is only exacerbated with magic attacks. Either the magic or special attacks deal massive damage from across the room, or they incapacitate you and immediately hit you a bunch of times with regular attacks.

An action RPG that I don't hear people talk about a lot is Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates. I won't claim it's the greatest game in the world or anything, but I really enjoyed my time with it. It looked pretty good for a 3D DS game, had some neat ideas and was set in the interesting Crystal Chronicles universe.

Simple question, is Monster Hunter considered an ARPG or not?

Upsetting the next Ys game looks kinda ugly. I hope they put a bit of effort into the PS4 version. Toukiden is on Vita too, and it doesn't look out of place on the PS4, but the trailer for Ys Next looks PS2 quality.

Will still give it a go, if it comes West. Just bummed. I like RPGs for their world a lot of the time, and nothing like some poor graphics to take you out of it.

There was a trailer showing the PS4 version of Toukiden? Can you link it? (if you consider is too off-topic go PM :P)

It surely is, but also offers the worst, cliche filled cast ever in one of the most boring, plain, stupid, cliche stories and the single handedly most unlikable protagonist since the beginning of time. It's almost amazing, when a character can make Lightning seem like a deep, likable character. Where it not for the godlike battle system, it would have been the worst jRPG I have ever played.

You're right. That game is probably the worst entries to recommend to people that want to give a try to the series. It's so bad sometimes I wonder if it was done in purpose or something. If you told me the writter previous works were limited to fanfiction, I would believe it.

Completely agree that action RPGs are basically the best shit ever. Especially when the RPG side is as flexible as Dark Souls with a ton of build variety. I hate how all regular RPGs have passive avoidance stats. Feels so cheap when you just RNG wrong and miss your hit. At least ARPGs base missing the enemy on whether you're good at the game or not.

Also there needs to be a new internet law specifically for GAF about how every thread is a Dark Souls thread.

2 Questions.

1. Does Star Ocean International count as an Action RPG ?
2. If I've already played the 360 version years ago, is it worth replaying the PS3 version ? Are there any story add on's like Tales of Vesperia or Eternal Sonata had on PS3 ?

Thread could use more retro love so I'll give shout outs to Crystalis, Final Fantasy Adventure, Legacy of the Wizard, Faxanadu, Faria, Zelda II, Willow, Magic of Scheherazade, Battle of Olympus, Radia Senki, Grand Master, Zeliard, Maze of Galious, Roland's Curse 1-2, Brain Lord, Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma, Secret of Mana 1-2, Secret of Evermore, Brandish 1-2, Tales of Phantasia, Star Ocean, Sorcerian, King Colossus, Popful Mail, Beyond Oasis, Dungeon Explorer I-II, Exile I-II, Xak I-III and Ys I-V.

Terranigma is by far the best Action RPG.
The Ys series is a good second followed by Secret of Mana/Evermore.

Anybody here ever played LoM with this combat mod?

Dont....$6 is worth the mystery
EDIT: Play on hard if you are a DMC vet
Play it on hard regardless, I say =P

Only played the sequel, but I've found it so boring...

Of course Star Ocean are action RPGs! Some of my favorites in fact! If you've played the 360 version already, there's not much additional content beyond playing the game again with Japanese VA and user interface. Not having to constantly switch discs to do endgame content was nice though.

Preach on, soul brother. One of my favourite games out there.

I couldn't finish the sequel either. I was so disappointed by it, but it's entirely possible there is not a lot of difference in its quality. Mechanically and design-wise they are pretty similar. The only real difference I noticed was that Echoes of Time's level design made the aI pathfinding go crazy a little too often. It's entirely Rings of Fate may have been a "right game at the right time" title for me, and I may not enjoy it as much any more today.

Does Dragon age inquisition count - if you ignore the tactical option on console you can play it like an action RPG.

Shame some of the Area of effect powers halt time, but most of the attacks dont

Does it have tropes related to the genre? Yes, you could argue that it indeed does. Though the mechanics are extremely watered down and streamlined in order to appeal to a wider audience, especially in comparison to many of the excellent entires mentioned in this thread.

What's a good Ys game to start with? Maybe Oath or Origin which are on Steam? I don't have any PS consoles.
Any of those two on Steam is a good bet. If you're unsure, try the free demo for Origin. If you enjoy it, then you should also enjoy Oath. I played the Origin demo, but ended up buying Oath because it was cheaper XD and I wasn't disappointed.

Its really strange that no one has mentioned Dark Messiah of Might and Magic
If You are fan of action RPGs, You have to play this game.

Also, its really great time for fans of genre, especially Diablo-like games. So many quality titles, some are very cheap [Van Helsing, Grim Dawn, Titan Quest, Torchlight] and some are even free [Marvel Online or Path of Exile]

To be honest, it's the PS Vita version I've been watching. But even so, the art assets look miles nicer than the ones in the Ys Next trailer. It's all about art style, as opposed to any kind of technical advantage.

That's a shame to me.

No Monster Hunter?

Let me help you out with Tales of Graces too.

While I don't think of Monster Hunter as an RPG, I don't fault people who do. The line between "Action Game", "Action RPG" and "Action Adventure" is pretty nebulous due to all the variation within the genres. Monster Hunter has lots of transparent numbers in its equipment, and careful management of weapons, equipment, as well as the active and passive buffs/debuffs are a core element throughout the entire game. Your experience is hidden early on, and makes it seem like you level up by doing key quests. Once you clear a certain key quest, your hunter rank starts showing your actual level, which is calculated based on the hunter points you gained from doing missions. It shares plenty of elements with other games that do get considered to be RPGs, and it's weirdly difficult to come up with a definition of an RPG that doesn't exclude other obvious RPGs.

It's probably best to treat hunting action games as its own thing, because there are enough of those these days to consider them separate.

I'd still say start with Chronicles. Mostly so you can appreciate the evolution of the series. It's kind of awkward to go back to Ys II and especially I after playing Oath or Origin.

Out of those two though: go with Oath.

What's GAF's view on Vagrant Story ? I haven't played it in years and I don't think I ever beat it, but I remember liking the battle system alot.

VS is one of my favorite games ever, but I have trouble calling it an action RPG in the same sense as the rest of these, since it's so particular about being wedded to the timing-based combos that don't actually happen in real-time. It's this bizarre hybrid of real-time and turn-based that I don't think I've ever seen another game do.

Obviously the first Parasite Eve was a bit of a precursor to VS' combat, so there's some similarity there.

That's a shame to me.

Toukiden may not be the most impressive thing ever (there aren't a lot of particle effects and that kind of stuff and the fields aren't especially complex), but it has a really great IQ. It has some great AA, it's native res and framerate holds really, really well. At least I didn't notice any drops. Character models are quite good too.

MH is an action game, not ARPG.

Well, I asked that because it's kind of hard to say. There are customization elements and a progression system with the crafting mechanic even if there aren't levels or skills you need to unlock.

So it's posible that some people consider it an action RPG while others don't. I understand both sides. And considerign in most MMORPGs leveling is a tutorial and most of the time you're grinding to upgrade gear like in Monster Hunter I find it kind of heard to draw a line.

It probably depends on who you ask.

The difference in MH is that the character customization and skills come strictly from their gear, rather than levels or builds. But that's pretty RPGish, as Earthpainting said. I have no problem calling them that, but the level/mission structure is a bit particular too. Perhaps hunting should be its own genre now, indeed.

It's possible finish it without a guide? I've been stuck for some time without knowing how to finish a couple of quests.

hmmm......Pandora's Tower, & Nier fit the bill :) they should be added to the list. It's odd how little love that game (Pandora's Tower) gets :(

This thread is my jam.

I love player oriented combat. Hate when I lose a fight because the enemy had bigger boots.

Great game with some unique systems and gorgeous graphics/soundtrack. Just don't expect it to be a rehash of Secret of Mana.

Is the combat this crappy throughout the whole game? Just kinda blew through the first cave area without breaking a sweat, and it seems like my movement options do nothing as I stand still to attakc anyway.

Yeah, the combat is really easy. You can get tons of movement options (and attack into/with them) the more skills you unlock. Pretty intuitive stuff, actually.
