Ninjas are cool. There's no ifs, ands, or buts around this HARD HITTING FACT
ual opinion
. I'm pretty sure that ninjas have been around in video games since the BEGINNING OF VIDEOGAMES

Has there ever been a game that you think has a very unique and visually appealing design when it comes to Ninjas?

Here's an example, and one of my favorites:

HotsumaHibana.png

Hotsuma and Hibana from Shinobi/Nightshade. I really dig the slick neo-ninja esque design that these two have. Along with their impractical scarfs that are just cool to have around.

when i hear ninja i think of tenchu.. the ps1 games... tenchu 1 and 2 were the best.... rikimaru... tatsumaruu... man i miss these games

They are an oppressed minority, suffering persecution at the hands of bad dudes everywhere.

It's like, as soon as you see a guy's a ninja it's okay to kill him. WTF is up with that bigotry?

My three favorite Ninja games are:

-Revenge of Shinobi (Genesis).

-Legend of the Mystical Ninja (SNES).

-Ninja Gaiden *series* (Xbox/Xbox 360).

And Ninja games have been around before the Genesis and SNES era. The earliest ones I can remember though is Ninja Gaiden for the arcade and NES and Shinobi for the arcade and Master System.

ninjas in games go back a long time before that, chief. there's some VERY notable 8 bit and arcade titles that predate those systems.

Yeah me too.

I'm not so keen on Ninja Gaiden type ninjas that don't even bother to hide. That dude fought his way through a zillion waves of enemies to reclaim his sword. If he was a real ninja the villain would be like "yeah we took his sw- wait where is it" and there'd just be a lotus flower there or whatever.

I did like the thing they did in Mark of the Ninja with the combo tattoo/ninja garb:

also.. yes ninjas in games go back a ways:

This thread makes me happy. :)

Shinobi for SNES was the bomb. Also Ninja Gaiden Black is still one of the best ninja games with a high difficulty curve.

Ninja Gaiden Black is not only one of the best ninja games of all-time, but flat out one of the best games of all-time, period. If for nothing else than that red/black ensemble that never appeared again

the only true ninja in this thread
no, because he never ever sneaks anywhere and everyone sees him.

he's like the worst example. more of a samurai if anything.

not saying the game isn't an awesome action game but "ninja game"... nope

Serious answer:

(Yeah he starts a thief but he's the closest the game gets to a ninja imo)

Looks cool, and will probably kill a guy for a bag of candy.

If you think it's all about pretty girls and clothes being ripped, you are horribly wrong. Thematically, the franchise is way more faithful to the usual ninja tropes than one would expect at first.

I really liked the look of the PS2 Shinobi main character, the scarf and the eyes on the headband are cool.

But clearly the best videogame ninja was in MGS1.

I'm actually a fan of Senran Kagura, so I agree 100%!

Ibuki is pretty close to faithful, outside of one of her supers, as to being a proper representation of a ninja.

Um, maybe you could mention what the series actually is...?

oh ok

Senran Kagura is a side scrolling action game for the 3DS. The player will assume the control of 5 different female ninja characters. The more they are damaged by enemies, the more their clothes are torn off. The game also features erotic elements that use the features of the Nintendo 3DS system such as stereostopic 3D, 3D cleavage along with 3D images of other body parts. Senran Kagura will feature character designs by Nan Yaegashi and scenario work from Yukinori Kitajima.

um... hmmmmmmm.

pretty hard to believe. do they spend any time actually hiding? and aren't they called kunoichi when they are female ninjas?

We did mention Tenchu.

I think Warframe sticks out, that's about it. Which is not to say that the others are badly designed.

Phew, I was worried Mini Ninjas wasn't gonna be on the first page.

Love that game! Super clean visuals, simple but functional stealth, shame it was a bit too easy even on Hard.

Thank you for doing it, it took this thread long enough.

Are there any games that takes the ninja approach of Tenchu (1 and 2?) That's the only ninja game for me. The other ones are cartoony-action games, that happen to feature ninjas, but they're not real ninja games in my book. :P

Maybe Red Ninja as well, mentioned early in the thread.

Yes. No. Depends. Kunoichi is sexually connoted, and generally means female ninjas who use seduction techniques, but not always. DOA and Naruto use kunoichi IIRC, but they don't go any further than the sexy, I believe.
Japanese also use 女忍者, or shinobi and ninja which are gender-neutral, etc. it's a mess.

Congratulations, you are a fine example of why I wrote...

Remember, first-hand experience of a game is always better than all the wikipedia articles in the world ! ;p
