Let's talk about Splatoon 2's rhythm game

A.K.A. Squid Beatz 2, situated in the east of Inkling Square, right beside an inkling jamming out to Dance Dance Revolution.

Having finished the single player campaign earlier this week, I was delighted that a rather fully-featured rhythm game was included in Splatoon 2. It's perfect for travelling and tuning out (or rather, in) of the usual turf war and ranked battle mayhem.

How is everyone finding it? If I had to think of a modern equivalent I guess it feels a lot like playing Taiko no Tatsujin/Taiko Drum Master with a controller, you can dual wield either side of the Switch's face buttons and triggers, and there are four note types:

-press any face button (though different face buttons play different percussion)
-press any trigger
-press face buttons on both sides
-press both triggers

as well as combinations of the above note types. Get a full combo on any stage and you'll get a Silver Inkling medal, get a full *FRESH* combo and you get gold.

I'm not really good enough yet to master Hard mode on a lot of the songs, but hopefully I'll get there.

Its a fantastic improvement on the first game's instructionless minigame.

I plan to get all gold eventually, but I might need to cheat with a second hdmi input on my tv set to overscan because the flashing border is absolutely obnoxious

Hitting the two shoulders or the two buttonpads does feel weird on the pro controller, I don't play enough gamepad based rhythm games to get thrown off as badly by it, but joycons or the Horipad if it >ever< comes out might be best for it.

Kinda sucks that like eight songs are locked behind having the amiibo though

Only given it a brief go. Did find the timing in the first game a bit off. From the little bit I played in Splatoon 2, it felt better, but I only tried normal.

Feels a bit anti climatic that nothing happens when you reach the end.

I hate the "not" ending- ending. I also hate that there's literally no point in playing it. Like, doing really good on a song, gimme 100 gold or something man. =( and this is coming from someone who absolutely LOVES Taiko no Tatsujin and other rhythm games.

Agreed about the unceremonious song endings, which is surprising considering how slick the interface and audiovisual feedback of the game overall is.

That's kind of harsh.

Ahaha! Fixed - can't believe I missed that!

I woke up with it playing in my head yesterday, and I hadn't even played Salmon Run the day before!

This is my only gripe really as well, I wish it at least said a letter score or "completed" or something before repeating. I realize it's just a glorified sound test but it feels weird to not have some sort of response from the game once you complete it even if it's just "yay, you played it". Maybe mobile game design and gamification ruined me

If you look at the upper-left of the screen you do get a medal appear on completion, but that's literally the only thing that happens when you get a full combo.

I just discovered this last night when scanning more Amiibos for the second time. It's okay I guess, I prefered the minigames in 1, they are fantastic. I would pay money to have them on my iPhone.

The way the buttons are displayed is VERY confusing, everything is either pink or green and the only difference is wether the shape is rounded or square.

It's super difficult to tell when should I press two buttons or just one -in hard mode- because there's such a tiny reaction window

My first thought was that the minigame was going for the CGA look. It probably doesn't, but the color palette is very similar.

I like it, but would absolutely love it if it had alternate control settings. After playing Taiko with the facebuttons only config, I find using triggers on rhythm games awful.

changing it to two rows without adding a high speed option and making one type of note triggers only makes it way worse than in the first

also the fact that you can't play it while queuing up for a match
