Let's talk about the Paris Catacombs

This is awesome I would totally love to visit there some day. For now though, this thread just makes me want to play through Vampire Bloodlines again.

Went to see the catacombs a couple of years ago but they were closed due to air quality being really bad at the time :(

I went this past March.

I'm fairly claustrophobic, so the lengthy & somewhat cramped walkway really did feel like a gateway to hell. But the first sight of the ossuary was bone-chilling (heh) and astonishing at once. Long line, yes, but surreal experience. Highly recommended.

Is it true about the guy who was documenting the catacombs(and drop his camera) never getting out?

Yes, yes , of course it's true. There were reports of screams being heard long into the night and torn apart body parts showing up near the gates in the days after. Of course no one is talking about it because they don't want to be ripped apart by the poltergeists standing behind them right at this minute. Don't look around behind you, but if you do, do it fast.

Posted this a while back in the "Scariest/creepiest/eeriest place you've ever seen/been/heard about?"-Thread. Note that this is about the part that is not open for tourists.

Just remembered that I bookmarked this thread a while ago, while I had myself locked out of my NeoGAF Account and was unable to post.

Creepiest place I have ever been lies just below Paris:

Following an abandoned railway track:

Up the entrance, hidden in the middle of a long dark tunnel:

Through a dark, wet labyrinth:

Parts of the area are filled with bones:

Isn't it illegal to enter the tunnels anyway? Besides, I can't imagine a French officer entering the tunnels in order to look for the people. "Fu*k this, I'm getting out of here. Au Revoir.

The whole network isn't open to public and it is illegal to enter it for safety reasons, although all you risk is a small fine and a tap on the hand. There is a whole community of people knowing different unofficial entrances to the Catacombs and going there for exploration, camping or partying. Because of that, the police is also patrolling there every night.
Unofficial entrances are plentiful, since the network is huge (and has been useful in the past for hiding, smuggling,...), so many buildings have an access in their basement. The school I worked at had one and the students used it for "initiation ceremonies" of first years.

The tourists have access to a limited part of the catacombs, the one with the fancy bone arrangements (I've been wanting to visit for years, but the line is so long I always give up)

They should make it a theme park

No u know what

I bet the catacombs are just an organization for the kind of folks like zed from pulp fiction

No monsters just sick in the head people

Its just so big nobody wants to spend $$ to investigate

Scariest Places used to be one of my guilty pleasure shows, I always thought this was one of the more fascinating places.

It's just a solution to the problem of overcrowding in local cemeteries and has been going on and well-documented for centuries. There's no evil organizations.

Whats the point of making catacombs in the first place? did they use the diablo dungeon randomizer to design it?

That is interesting

I'm not sure where you live, but imagine a place with millions of people living (and dying) in it non-stop for the past 2,000 years. (or more realistically, 1700, since the Romans cremated their dead before the empire converted to Christianity, at which point, the dead body became a sacred item)

That's a whole lot of dead people, and they have to go somewhere, especially as the city continued to grow and grow.

I actually went here a few weeks ago when I was on vacation in Europe.
As others have mentioned the line was super long (it was in August). The catacombs themselves are pretty damn cool. Just a ton of bones stacked up, and temperature is pretty cool. Wouldn't really call them scary per se, but perhaps a bit unsettling.
Reminded me of Dark Souls tbh.

Apparently this is all I need to know:

In all seriousness, this is a really interesting (and creepy) thread.
