Lets talk about the Shadow Hearts series

First off, I think SH:C is probably the best RPG on the PS2 outside of the SMT series (as I haven't played those at all) and therefore best RPG of this gen. I know it's saying a lot but I absolutely loved every part. From the sympathy you eventually feel for Kato, to Nicolai and Rasputin arguing:
"He didn't just defeat that demon. He overpowered him and now controls him!"

I loved the campy humor in the entire game. Laughed my ass off at the Man Festival, too... particularly Yuri's reaction when he's told what the loser of the Grand Finale has to do. :lol

First one was good, too. I played it before it got any real popularity here in the US, of any sort. I actually went and rented it the moment after I read EGM's review saying "The best RPG you've never heard of."

I'm worried about the third one though. I don't know whether to buy it immediately or wait until I get some more reviews on it. Right now my choice is between going and getting DQ8 or waiting a week and getting SH3. I just don't know which would be the better game.

OH, and for those of you wondering, my Gamestop has SH:C marked at 20 bucks brand new.

Christ, I haven't seen it anywhere recently. Gamestop doesn't even have the game (new or used) in their website.

Get off your high hourse. Just because I don't like the games doesn't mean I'm wrong. I have my reasons why I don't like it and think it's mediocre. In fact, I just tried the SH3 demo again, and I just hate it. I've given the series 3 chances (if this demo counts as a chance then be it) and it's not for me at all. To say I'm wrong just because I don't like this game series just makes you look narrowminded.

Himuro, calm down dude. I'm just teasing you.

Of course Shadow Hearts 2: Covenant is awesome and rocks your face, but that's only besides the point man!

Well looking at your posts from BM's old rpg thread, i was positive you were provoking and treating as if I'm some nub just because we disagree.

Well in THAT thread... there was actually something worth debating about ;)

Shadow Hearts Covenant is awesome to me, but hey... if it's not your thing...

1. The battle system is fun for the first 5 hours, then you don't feel like messing with that ring any longer, atleast I didn't.

2. How is the story different from typical jrpgs? From what I played of Shadow Hearts and SH: Covenant, it was cliche tripe. The only thing that SH has going for it that seperates itself from other jrpgs is the early 1900's setting, it doesn't even use that effective because many of the designs, architecture, and so forth are things you'd find in the modern world (ie Johnny's office in SH3). From what I remember in SH:C, some pretty boy priest guy stole an evil cup or something. I don't even remember anymore because it was so awful.

3. What is great about homoerotic shop keepers? Seems like a lame anime fanboy gimmick to me straight from a harem where there's a gay character that constantly hits on the main character. "Oh Johnny boy! You're just my type!" *turns off ps2*

I haven't even mentioned the awful, bland, lame, and uninspired characters (Joachim, Gepetto, the dog..), nor the boring one screen towns, boring and unimaginative dungeons, or the awful comedy (see the homoerotic shopkeepers, Gepetto, and Joachim, or the monster designs like that boss early on who was basically a fucking float pair of TESTICLES. LITTERALLY).

With all of this mentioned I have one conclusion: most overrated rpg series this gen. By far the most uninspired, boring, and overpraised series that doesn't hold well in any area aside from maybe music.

After playing the SH3 demo I still hate it. I hate the character designs. I hate the music. I think the battle system is fun, but I doubt it'd hold my attention long, and once again I am positive I will not be a fan of the characters. I wish those two gay guys would die.

"Johnny boy you may be my type!!"

Poor execution to try to get your audience to laugh.

Homophobia's a BITCH, ain't it? :lol

Seriously, though:

1.) Very few RPGs don't have battle system that plateau or come close to it after a few hours and just rely on stronger weapons/armor to carry it for the rest of the game. I can't fault SH for this.

2.) It's different from typical JRPGs in that it actually makes me laugh from time to time by not taking itself too seriously. Laughing may require you to HAVE A SOUL, though. :)

3.) Dude, c'mon. At least they have personality instead of just being "Shop Wench #29523."

only animu swishes likes suikoden 3. you couldn't make an rpg with worse mechanics and field design if you tried. it was bad polygon puppet theatre.

i've been trying for awhile to find suikoden 3 and I can't find it anywhere except at a Family Video up here. Ugh.

And by the by, that Gamestop that used to have Shadow Hearts: Covenant doesn't have it anymore. They only have a used one with no case, and since my slumming stops when I don't even get the original case... death upon that game and death to gamestop.

Square's lack of presence this gen was substantial. I think if they had more of a presence we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

I agree with Himuro, wasn't my bag. But I can see why others would like it. I'd suggest a rental at least to try it out.
