Let's talk about the WipEout series

Wipeout 2048 is the closest thing to 2097 (XL) they've come so far. I'm madly in love with it and I can easily ignore the issues.

This game is dope/crack/whatever, and the soundtrack is just so right! Setting a new record while listening to Invaders Must Die is nothing but amazing.

Buy this game!

God damn, you guys are killing me here! A month is too long to wait....

I picked up another copy of Wipeout 2097 a couple of weeks ago, with visions of reclaiming a world record time on Vostok Island. I was ashamed at my deteriorated skills. I've decided to leave that dream behind, and focus all my efforts on 2048.

Was that on one charge or did you have mains power in that flight? If it was just on the battery how long did you spend playing the game?

I charged it fully before the flight, and turned down the brightness to about 60% (far too bright of a screen at default brightness in a dark airplane), and it lasted the whole flight. I was playing pretty much nonstop. Very pleased with the battery life thus far.

I've seen some, but it still looks very clean compared to the older, industrial settings.

It's interesting...visually 2048 is quite a mix, because you've still got a lot of 20th century (and older, in regards to Triumphal Arches etc.) architecture that the tracks wind around. I look forward to spending a few sessions just looking around under the guise of timetrials.

As it stands, though, the track design and flow I've experienced thus far will please ol' Poimandres like nobody's business.

Was listening to the Wipeout 2097 soundtrack today. The best videogame soundtrack ever, in my opinion. I don't think a soundtrack has ever captured a moment in time or even contributed to the success of a whole platform or the industry at large more than that.

Utterly incredible.

I want 2048 so badly. As soon as the Vita drops to an acceptable price for me I'm going to pick one up even if that's the only game I want for it right now.

Oh, and team Feisar for the win.

I've been playing Pulse on the PSP and gotten myself hooked. I am interested in the DLC, but can't find it on PSN. Wipeout-game.com, the URL on in-game splash screens, seems to have died. The wipeoutpulse.com website has a click-through agreement for downloading, but I can't see any actual download link. Am I missing something? If not, is there any way to grab the DLC via a legit method?

played the psp version of wipeout a little and i find it really sluggish compared to the PS3 version. Anyone else find this?

Are you in North America? If so, then I've got bad news for you--they never released the DLC in this region.

Even though the game is a few years old, it would be great if they would go ahead and release the DLC anyway. I'd still buy it, provided that it's not overpriced.

I also thought it would've been smart of Sony to release a PSP Dual Pack (kind of like these) featuring Wipeout Pure and Wipeout Pulse, complete with the the full range of DLC packs for both games. Since Sony has been releasing their Dual Packs in the PlayStation Store, this would have been an excellent way for PSP owners who are latecomers to the series to get acquainted with Wipeout while they await the imminent releases of the PS Vita system and Wipeout 2048.

Sony give any reason for not releasing the DLC in US? I only discovered this after buying the overpriced version from PSN... At least, DLC for Pure is free

They just couldn't be bothered. Europe got a PS2 port for Pulse also (does that contain the DLC?). I really liked the Pulse DLC -- a European friend let me borrow his account in order to buy them (he also picked the game up for me, so I have it on UMD) but one day my save file got corrupted (or whatever) and it can no longer see the DLC; this wiped all the records I'd created with it. Sony, just let us buy the full game!

yes, it comes with all the pulse dlc on the disk ready to go. :rock

I wish they'd bring in a design studio for WipeOut again. I don't think the visual design is as good now as it was in the games up to WipeOut 3.

I finished wipeout pulse (psp) recently. What a wonderful game, and long too (it took me 16 hours and a half, counting all the dlc).

So now my body is ready for 2048.

Even though this might be true, the visual aesthetics for the Wipeout series is still better than half the games available today. There might have been some missteps (Fusion and 64), but other than that, the series has been pretty consistent in my book.

Has Wipeout Pulse on US PSN ever been discounted? I'd love a digital copy on my Vita, but wince whenever I see the $20-something price tag.

I know that Pure and Pulse were both on sale in the EU store a few weeks ago.

I've always wanted an F1-style career mode for the series, my friends and I used to talk at length about how it'd be awesome to grow as both a racer and a team throughout several seasons of AG racing.. getting new sponsors, buying/researching new tech, testing out prototype tracks, etc

fans of this series should love this, a guy compiled a backsotry on all the teams in the series dating back to the beginning

fantastic insight into the world not seen in the games, making me wish there was a story mode to compliment the races

That's super badass. Almost threadworthy.

I've always thought that a WipEout game would have incredible potential if they found some way to put emphasis on the crazy backstory and lore.

I've only ever Played the initial game on the PS1. This was really around when I realized the play station wasn't some shitty also ran system with a few good games (and there were a lot in the 90s) but a system bursting with creative new games.

Loved the voice 'miss-isle' 'rohket'.

Cool thanks, I never knew about any of the backstory.

I still have my 2097, glad I never sold it when I cleared up my PS1 games. I had a moment like Andy in Toy Story 3, but kept it... ^-^

That's awesome, thanks for sharing. I'm playing 2048 right now, I'm having so much fun

Also 'Contender eliminated', especially during Combat events

Its called Received Pronunciation English.

Which is in itself interesting because the games are developed in Liverpool and no-one speaks like that up there.

I know, i still like it though (frankly no one speaks RP anywhere in the UK really)

'shouckwaive' :)

re-watching the story on the teams also got me thinking, how cool would it be if there was like a old school style (cowboy bebop/ghost n the shell) anime based on the series, the episodes basically write themselves

I love the series but at the same time i suck at racing games.

Was playing Fury add-on for 2048 and last batch of races were so hard, even on easy setting.

So i want to bitch about things i don't like as we all know well what we like about the game :lol
Speaking for 2048:
-Computer gangs up on you with weapons.
-Pulling a risky move is more punishable then rewarding. This usually happens in tracks like Sol, if you can pull it off you can just fly over like half of the track. But if you fall you lose like 5 seconds.
-90 degree turns and having to pull your finger from thrust kills it for me :(
-Some rubberbanding, actually it somewhat helps too, but on A speed (especially for add-ons) when you are leading the race if you go off the track you are like 8th racer.

I don't know if you guys are okay with these problems. Because i am not so good at racing games :/

Funny how the 9000 series is considered the dark age of AG racing. I bet that isn't part of the official lore of the series. And even though I thought Fusion was a meh game, at 60 fps it still looks mighty fine in that video.

well fusion gave us Zone mode so I guess it wasn't all bad, but the story on the collapse of the 9000 league makes for great drama

Would that problem be fixable if they had patched in customizable controls?

Wipeout HD is currently broken as fuck. Because of utterly incompetent QA (from the beginning) and patches to get crossplay working me and many other people are unable to play online.

In the past I regularly started up the game for some short sessions of online play. I guess I have to buy the next WO to get my fix. Nice going SL!

I loved the Wipeout games on PSP, just perfect for the handheld, I spent a lot of time on them. Didn't like Wipeout HD though, the zone mode was killer but the game felt hit or miss.

If it is, in fact, Wipeout-related, I hope that the PS3 portion of the project is an add-on for HD. I'd had for them to fragment the community, especially now that I just got back into the game after finding out the loading ads had been removed for awhile.

Q: is there any reason I shouldn't delete the dozens of files of ghost data clogging up my saves folder?

I like Wipeout conceptually and aesthetically, but in practice I was always completely horrible at it and could never get into it.

Huge bummer about Studio Liverpool.
