• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

Lets turn the mirror on ourselves. What are some examples of hyperbole on NeoGaf?

[Game] is garbage/ best thing ever. There seems to be no middle ground to a number of people here. It's especially worse with the types who hang out in game OTs and recount their torturous experiences.

The angry nerd persona, basically. It's not endearing whatsoever.

If you read that entire post you quoted, you'll know this comment was unnecessary!

the age of my edit is done ;)

I will add, I don't think you should pay for that one forever, but you drag it out when you insist that it was "true"

And yet still the PS3 remains as the hole in the ground that cost Sony every penny of profit they made from PS2, PS1, PSP and every other PlayStation related enterprise.

Sure, they barely managed to squeak out a second place victory worldwide, but I think the admission from Cerny on the PS4 circuit on how many things they did wrong with PS3 and needed to change is at least partial admission that the PS3 was, in large part, a failure - at least in any way a business would measure it (profits). So whatever, MGS4 part notwithstanding, it may be hyperbole, but it's hyperbole with heavy truth in it. >:)

wow you just gave another perfect example of hyperbole. how do you do it?

"This popular series you like is shit"

Runner up: "There wont ever be (or has existed) a beautiful mature innovating game like the Last of Us ever again"

Using "garbage", "atrocious" or "horrendous" as an adjective for any slight negative opinion.

I think Demon Souls or Dark Souls praise is well deserved, but some forum visitors can over praise them to the point of being annoying. The games' design is still far from being perfect.

No offense to Ami this has nothing to deal with him but yea, that post is an example of how silly people can look when they post stuff looking at dat crystal ball

Explain which part of the post you quoted is hyperbole. They did lose all their profits from the PS1, PS2, PSP and every other PlayStation related enterprise thanks to the PS3.

See, even though my post originally is obviously hyperbole and doesn't ring true in its extremeness, most people just don't like hearing how bad PS3 was for Sony. They don't like to address that, ya know, PS3 was a failure as a business enterprise.

Open an average Zelda thread and bask in the hyperbole directed at Twilight Princess or Skyward Sword. I often get the impression that I've played completely different games.

A recent winner from PC gaffer Alexandros(rip in peace) in reaction to The Chinese Room going Sony first party with Everybody's Gone to the Rapture:

Their attitude deserves a boycott, no matter how
they try to rationalize it. They got funded by the
Indie Fund, did great sales on PC and jumped to
console exclusivity immediately. This really is
nothing short of despicable as far as I'm
concerned, I will not buy A Machine For Pigs or
any other Chinese Room game in the future.
They have every right to make a business
decision as professionals, I also have a right as
a consumer to vote with my wallet and express
my displeasure.

Dark Souls is the best game ever and recent Zelda titles were complete crap. It's all one big hyperbolic time chamber of crap.

Of course it was serious. At the time we were in, PS3 was losing every single exclusive it ever had from the PS2 gen, every multiplatform game was superior on 360, PS3 was losing in sales worldwide and the final third party game that they still had to call their own of any major scale was FFXIII. When that was lost, I said the comment, which was about that without that final exclusive, I'm not sure how Sony could turn the PS3's fate around.

And of course they didn't. It remains a profit hole in the ground and barely squeaked out second place, while giving up their previous gains in the US and the UK to Microsoft. And the reason they remained in second place is pretty much because Microsoft will never be competitive in Japan.

People always use this post, but they seem to be implying the PS3 isn't a massive business failure.

But sony did pretty much turn the PS3 around. yes they lost tons of money but they salvaged it. At the time you made that post though it was like the bombs coming down all around and no where to go.

GAF flips it's shit and overreacts whenever any feminist says anything about video games. Nitpicking gameplay mechanics for thousands upon thousands of posts is okay, but as soon as someone mentions sexism in games, people throw a fit.

Totally true. Nothing gets GAF going like like a post about sexism. Frankly it's kind of embarrassing

Sony did a good job of reversing this part:
There is no reason left for any one, hardcore or casual, to substantively invest in a PS3.
Though at the time I suppose it was somewhat valid, depending on one's faith at the time in Sony's first parties.

1. 30 fps is a fucking slideshow. Had a good laugh from that one

2. Dark Souls is literally the best game ever made and nothing since will fill the void in my heart of me not playing it right this second (until Dark Souls 2 rolls around)

dude Platinum should make the next ______ and basically Platinum should make every game from now on because Platinum Platinum Platinum Platinum

It's really down to two perspectives

Did Sony eventually make a platform that overcame how much they lost throughout the first half of the gen? In terms of quality of their game output, I would say yes, as a gamer.

Did Sony eventually turn the PS3 around and salvage it as a business prospect, as a system that had wiped out all its PlayStation profits? The answer to that is unequivocally no.

My comment was a little about both, and like I said it was definitely hyperbole. I appreciate that you can understand the time and place it happened. But I still feel there are heavy truths within the statement, if you can follow me for a sec :)

Profits isn't actually the only way a business measures success. Market share and growth is a big indicator of success as well. For example, xbox OG wasn't a failure because it put MS on the map and made them a serious contender for the next generation.

I'm not arguing whether or not the ps3 was successful or not. But businesses would look at the situation from more than just a profit angle. Long term gains over short term gains.

1. Nintendo is doomed
2. No one will buy Xbone (I won't, but some people will)
3. GTA IV is garbage (it's still not amazing...but it's not garbage)
4. Bioshock Infinite has horrible combat
5. The Last of Us is perfect

Also, people use the word "masterpiece" too much. And "garbage" / "crap" / "horrible".

Gaming technophiles are probably my biggest pet peeve when it comes to the gaming community at large. "No 60fps, no buy". Whatever, dude.

Not really hyperbole, but I totally agree that those people are insufferable. Unless they are just saying that but do buy those games anyway, in which case I guess it's kind of an example of hyperbole.

a couple weeks ago there was a thread about developers that had never made a "bad" game.

in that thread, various people called these games "awful" or "bad"

  • Left 4 Dead
  • Diablo 3
  • Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
  • Infamous
  • Max Payne 3
  • Halo: Spartan Assault
  • Nintendogs
  • Jak X: Combat Racing
  • Jak 2
  • Jak 3
  • Oblivion
  • Fallout 3
  • Skyrim
  • Grand Theft Auto IV
  • Modern Warfare 2
  • Modern Warfare 3
  • Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
  • Saints Row 2
  • Madworld
  • Trauma Center
  • Persona 4
  • MGS: Peace Walker
  • MGS: Portable Ops
  • LA Noire
  • Dota 2

Personal opinion. Ex. GTA 4 may had been grand in scope and vision but I thought it was insanely unfun and overrated. IMO, it is in fact a bad game, since it wasn't fun.

I'm typing this post slowly on my dead vita thingy with that strange oled thing, so sorry for the spelling and slowness..

hyperbole is a perfect word for yours and mine and many other post here..

The Last of Us is the best game ever made since Uncharted 3 which was the other best game ever made, since Uncharted 2.

"Diablo 3/Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance/Bioshock Infinite/Dishonored/Remember Me/Nier/Tomb Raider/Portal 2/The Last of Us/Metal Gear Solid 3/Metal Gear Solid 4/Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker are good games."

"Deadly Premonition/Heavy Rain/DmC Devil May Cry/Saints Row The Third/Call of Duty" are bad games.

I really hate when I see some posts highlight a certain issue with a game and proceed to blow it out of proportion.

The game drops 2 frames during intense firefights. "The shit stutters everywhere!"

Nobody bought the game (That should never be the end all judgement of any form of media).
"Its a bargain bin title! Its crap!"

You would think alot of games straight up crashed with a blue screen if you took some posters by their word.

I also really hate blatant hypocrisy in some threads. One thing is perfectly fine in Game X but when its found in Game Z its a big issue and should be criticized...

Microsoft has a net negative too so what's the key difference?

lol @ people saying The Last of Us being good is hyperbole.

I don't think that word means what you think it means.

PS3 is a business failure, but that doesn't make it a bad console

In fact considering it's exclusives I much prefer it to its competition

It's failure business-wise would only be relevant to my interests if it pushed sony out of the market but instead it forced sony to be what it is now

Although to be honest the hyperbole that was your post is the best example of this thread I have ever seen although I am fairly new

I seriously considered it to be a joke post up until this thread
