So it looks like I have 65 movies to watch by the end of the year. Two or three a week should do it. Anyone else up to the challenge?

I still have 90 of these left. Every time I try to chip away at it, I get sidetracked by different actors' and directors' catalogs. I know there are at least 10 or so of them sitting on my shelf right now I should be getting to.

One day, IMDB *shakes fist*

It is just about seeing the movies on the list that you have not yet watched. Then you report in each time you see one of those films and give a small review.

I'm up for that. Been playing slow catchup with the films I've yet to see but if we were to do something like this it would motivate me to watch more often.

1.The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

What? This always-on-TNT schlock is #1?

9. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Might as well just watch a randomly generated list instead.

Edit: Maybe my post is a tad, uh, aggressive...but there's no way on earth The Return of the King is one of the best movies of all time. (Or even in the top 250 at all) I find it almost inconceivable that any film fan could believe that. At least I understand the appeal of Shawshank, though I completely no-sell it's obvious manipulations.

Most of the ones I haven't seen have been on my "Watch this shit already you lazy bastard" list for years.

I'm looking at the list and going "Yeah, I want to see that!" every .2 seconds.

The point is not to analyze the list. It is a list of films voted on by a lot of movie fans on a popular website and nothing more. It is about finding those films on the list that you have not seen and experiencing them for the first time, and letting us know how you feel about them. I have a lot of problems with several of the movies on there, but that is not the purpose of this thread.

Hmm, haven't seen about a third of those. Mostly either very recent, very old or animated and foreign entries.

Having The Dark Knight and Inception so high is absolutely adorable.

That is typical IMDB. I think there was a time where all three Lord of the Rings films were in the top 5. And all of the original Star Wars films were much higher then they are now. There is still a lot of stuff on there though that is off the beaten path.

I tried this a few years ago and while I saw alot of stuff I hadn't seen (and enjoyed most), I just can't bring myself to see anything pre-1960. I know that's probably a terrible thing to say, but I just can't do it, film has changed too much.

For those who want to participate, it would be nice to make your list of films you have not seen so you can check them off.

You just have to accept how different the acting, framing, choreography, whatever might be and put it out of your mind. Once you've seen enough of them, you'll have no issues jumping from a 2012 CG explosion fest to the Bogey-est of Bogart movies of that era. Hell, half of the appeal is watching how stylish these old movies used to be. The black + white picture and use of shadow in classic film noir is so good.

Some of that stuff is good but some of it is only interesting as a piece of history. Touch of Evil is a perfect example - the casting is insane, some of the acting is ridiculous (hotel guy lol - actually everything involving the hotel is laugh worthy) and the plot is nonsense. The best part of the movie is the first shot. If you don't give it a pass for being old it's just pretty bad in many respects. Even as a piece of film history I don't see how it's particularly important.

Whereas something like Rear Window is genuinely compelling if you can get past the old-timey trappings of it.

A lot of older movies use a method of acting much more akin to big theatrical performances and it can come off as cheesy, you definitely have to be in the right mindset for it but it's something you can adjust to and even appreciate, like good pixel art.

Wow, great. I started doing this a few months ago, I'm 28 short now. Can't seem to find the last 20 movies (for free) anywhere amoung libraries and friends though, but I'll take care of that problem when I get there. I'll be sure to keep an eye on this topic and post in it with my impressions later on!

Looking at the 65 you are short, OP, you can very much look forward to Mary & Max. It's simply amazing. Citizen Cane and Rebecca are rather good as well.

Touch of Evil is so energetic though. And the camera work + lighting is great. It's a weird ride and I really enjoyed it.

I like this list, for anyone who doesn't like the look of / has seen most things on the IMDB/AFI ones http://www.fastcocreate.com/1679472/martin-scorseses-film-school-the-85-films-you-need-to-see-to-know-anything-about-film

What pre-1960 films have you tried?

Starting my journey with the Bicycle Thief, wish me luck.

You're starting with the best. Enjoy.

That's totally your loss. 1950's was the best decade for cinema imo.

I wonder how long it will take until all the comic book movies will take over this list :D Avengers and Batman are only a start. Also Inception/Batman guy has a real cult behind him and seems like all his movies will end up on that list.

No problem. It's a valid opinion. 40's was also damn great. Especially Film Noir and Neorealism.

Yea, 40s and 70s for me. There's an edge to the films of those decades. 50s is great too though. The point is, using 1960 as a cutoff point is depriving yourself of joy.

Combined the films I haven't seen from the BFI, AFI & IMDB list, comes out at 113 films - will start with Brief Encounter when I get home;

Hope it doesn't put you off from watching the rest because that's totally a film i would expect some people having a problem with because "omg so old and boring".

229.Let the Right One In (2008)

It doesn't include all of my favourites - but out of these the top 10 should include (in no particular order) let the right one in, the shawshank redemption, oldboy, rear window, pan's labyrinth, memento, north by northwest, vertigo, district 9 and amelie, for my money. Some films (the matrix, the avengers!) are far too high up.

Going by a random site I just used I'm at 186 / 250. There were a few that I own that I haven't gotten around to watching yet. Most of the ones I haven't seen are oldies that I've found hard to come by.

Last time I counted I had only seen about half of the movies. Catching up on the rest of the list would take me years. IIRC, it was mostly animated or old (before 1970) movies that I'd missed.

I tried this a few years ago and while I saw alot of stuff I hadn't seen (and enjoyed most), I just can't bring myself to see anything pre-1960. I know that's probably a terrible thing to say, but I just can't do it, film has changed too much.
I kinda agree.

I've seen some old films (e.g 12 Angry Men - 1957) but I don't actively seek them out because they look and feel so old. I can't relate to them and get into them as much.
