Levi's CEO Agrees: Don't Wash Your Jeans

Cloth has a longer life, becomes more premium since quality of the jeans keeps being high for a longer time. Reputation rises, people like to buy wear luxury, that's why.

Seems more complicated than just selling more jeans. And it's not like Levi's is selling $300 jeans like the kind DenimGAF buys.

I absolutely hate when jeans start to fade. I had a great pair of black Levi's that started to fade because I was washing them too often. Since then I've tried to limit my jean washing, I don't think they get smelly. I don't know if I would go down the never wash route, but every 2 weeks is overkill.

OMG A DIFFERENT IDEA!!!
its the end of the world :U

I don't wash my jeans regularly, I stick to a handful of main pairs, and a few backups that get worn from time to time.
They don't smell like anything in particular.

If I were to be at a bonfire all night they would prolly smell like burnt smoke, if I were to spill soda or something on em they will prolly get sticky. Pickle and hotdog juice anyone?

Situations like that warrant a washing.
Though situations like that I generally avoid.
It's rare for me to wash a pair.

There is something about the material, that as long as you don't roll around in mud and shart yourself all the time, they shouldn't hold or pick up strong odors.

As long as you wash yourself daily, wearing a clean pair of jeans for 5-10 hours of the day, maybe twice a week shouldn't make them stink, and they should remain clean.

Jeans turn ugly with washing, its like someone goes over them with the dodge tool on maybe 6.5% opacity each time you wash em.
And ya'lll say you wash your denim weekly?!!
Ya'll must buy new sets of jeans every 4-6 months, or ya'll must like the super faded look :U

Do you not wear underwear? That's what that's for.

I do wash my jeans, but I usually wear them 3-4 times between washes simply because they hold and are pretty thick.

As long as you don't get them dirty they can hold for a week of wear without being too bad. I mean, as long as you don't sleep in them and/or roll around in the dirt they'll be fine. I definitely wouldn't go without washing them at least occasionally though. The color doesn't fade that badly if you wash and dry in low heat.

Obviously. I don't wash after every wear but usually a weeks worth of solid jean wearing will leave it with some ball sweat/bum residue that should be washed.

I wear my jeans until I spill something on them, then I wash them. Underwear, socks and t-shirts are changed daily, since that's where the sweat is. Maybe my body is dysfunctional, but I don't sweat on my legs.

I don't get what people are doing to their jeans, that would warrant washing them a few times a week.

I wear my jeans up to 3 days, then wash them inside-out at 30°C with Persil Colour and dry them on the line. They're fine.

They're jeans, not a cashmere sweater. They can take it.

Well in one day the very lowest of the low estimate of sweating is 1 liter with normal rated at 5-6 and high at 8-10 across the entire surface of the body. Give or take a couple ounces. Add that to the completely separate oil that comes of the the sebaceous gland as well as the 320,000+ skin cells that come off per 8 hour period. I think many people just don't want whatever percentage that is in their levi's to stick to them the next time and the next time and the next time.

Since you actually do sweat everywhere and not just in particular places and you can do so without any actual feeling of sweating I think that is what drives most people to take care of it.

Curious if I'm in a minority - I haven't worn jeans for probably 20 years. If I wore some, people would probably think it would be weird since I never wear them.

Does this guy never fart? The point of washing clothes isn't germs, it's that clothes, yes, even jeans, start to get a layer of filth on them after awhile. No, it's not unhealthy not to wash your jeans, but unless you want a layer of shit and piss particles all over your pants for months, I'd recommend putting your jeans into the washer every now and then.

idunno what your doing bro, but if stuff is coming out when i fart, i'm doing it wrong.

I give mine about a two week rotation. My wife demands as such. I don't like what the washing does to them. I used to wash my jeans about once a month, they last longer and look better in the long run. Then having to wear really tight jeans that no longer fit due to excessive washing.

To those that sound surprised by this, you should buy more premium denim. Then you will understand that excessive washing is bad. You should have jeans that you wear out occasionally and those you wear regularly that you can beat up and wash. I have several dark denim that I have and have washed a few times since I had them that I wear out on special occasions or just events in general, if they get dirty, I spot clean them..

I washed my old Levis every day and they held up just fine. But when I took em up to a job site up north, I could only wash every week or so and they basically fell apart -- both in color and structure.

Got myself a couple pairs of raw denim and going through with the no-wash thing right now. Few months in and it's ok so far, but I feel like I'm not wearing it enough. Only wear them every other week so I'm not sure when I will see the personalized fit and patterns.

I wear a pair of jeans for a week, more or less, then I wash 'em and wear another pair. Those are meant to be resistant.
Same with sweaters usually.

The suit I use for work gets a different treatment, I wash it once every 3 months. I don't know how it's possible, but it's not smelly nor stained nor covered in shit particles.

Maybe you should wash your balls more often.

LOL

My brother was like that, he would borrow my clothes and they would smell like funk, I had to stop letting him. He'd be like, oh just one day, but his stink would come thru in a day.

I can wear jeans for a few and they smell clean.

I wash my jeans every 6 months.

You put them in the freezer every 2 weeks and it take of any smell.

Also:

EDMONTON — Despite the yuck factor, wearing raw denim jeans for 15 months straight without washing them doesn’t pose any health risks for healthy people, according to a student-professor team that tested a pair of those jeans at the University of Alberta.

Josh Le, 20, bought a pair of Nudie Jeans in September 2009. He wore them nearly every day and even slept in them for about a month to really let the sweat shape the creases. He spilled food on it, wiped it off with a paper towel, and kept on going. “I wanted to push it to the extreme,” he said.

But when Le and assistant human ecology professor Rachel McQueen swabbed the inside of the jeans and tested them for bacteria in December 2010, they found levels pretty normal. And after Le washed the jeans, then wore them for 13 days before re-testing them, bacteria levels were nearly identical.

I wash my Levi jeans, it was a big mistake lol. There's this massive rectangle where my phone would be. I took a gamble with $40 jeans, never again :(

The point is to have a pair that fades with your daily life. If you have a phone in your pocket daily then nothing wrong with that.

So if you need to wear jeans for 12-16 hours do you go home and rotate another pair in?

No, obviously he keeps 3 pairs of jeans on him at all times. One to wear, one to replace the first for those long days. And one more for emergency use.

It's not just your own filth that makes not washing your jeans gross, it's sitting in countless public places.

I only wash my outer clothes if they look dirty, I sweat profusely in them, or if I go to a smokey place. Shirts, pants, shorts, jeans: they don't need washing when you wear underwear and undershirts.

1) Fuck that advice. Clothes get dirty. I'll wear a pair of jeans for a week max then it's time for a change.

2) With Jeans I always turn them inside out when machine washing them, that way although they are cleaned the process doesn't wear the outer side of the denim needlessly (useful tip my father taught me from his laundry days). Good advice any form of delicate as well tbh.

3) Similarly I Iron them inside out as well. This avoids silvering them (especially useful to maintain black jeans).

Little curious as to the climate/humidity of the places you folks live in that allows you to never wash your jeans.

No, obviously he keeps 3 pairs of jeans on him at all times. One to wear, one to replace the first for those long days. And one more for emergency use.

Could work. They could also stash jeans in sealed plastic bags at places they frequent often. That would alleviate the issue of having to carry around the extra pairs everywhere.

I try to be self aware about things, regardless of what the internet thinks after I mention my preference, I do my best to keep self conscious on how I look and smell. With that, I've gone months without washing a pair of jeans. Keep in mind, it's an office/school/ect. environment. Not working in the hot sun at a physical job, which I washed those once a week.

I've specifically asked people, including those who I know through long history friendships that are brutally honest, if they smelt/felt anything on an pair of jeans I had been wearing, unwashed, for a long period of time. They couldn't tell. They thought I had just washed them (I did make sure they weren't excessively wrinkled and nicely folded for the test).

It's a waste of your money, detergent, time, and energy to wash them every week. Don't bother, unless you have a glandular problem and sweat badly or just go into stinky/gross environments. If that's not the case though, don't waste your time. Spend it on more important things.

Also, you don't sweat as much on your lower thighs, shins, knees, and calfs. You sweat in your groin area, where you SHOULD have underwear on. That's what it's there for, to absorb that stuff and keep you comfy. Wash those often, because they DO get dirty.

"These are one of my favorite jeans."

Where is the "pairs of?" I try not to be a Grammar Nazi, but I just had to read that about four times because I thought I'd skipped over those words.

Also, you don't have to wash jeans every time, but never? I don't think so man, you probably smell like a bum. Strike probably, you do smell like a bum.

Considering how late Levi's was to making jeans that weren't total shit (about 30 years later than the Japanese were making vintage Levi-inspired recreations)), I'd take this guy's opinion with a huge grain of salt. The no-wash phenomenon was perpetuated by Nudies and APC, two companies whose products do lose a ton of indigo when they hit water. This isn't the case with some of the better Japanese brands.

Not washing your jeans does not make them more durable--it does the opposite. You'll notice that the most common tear in a pair of selvedge jeans is in the crotch, as the sustained build up of sweat makes that area prone to such damage. This does not happen to people that wash more regularly. I know this from experience: I work in a shop that does denim repair, and the most busted up jeans are always the ones that are never washed. I also know this from personal experience: I've experimented with several methods of washing/not washing jeans for several years, and washing them is absolutely better for the longevity of the jean.

The only "benefit" to not washing your jeans does is that it does keep them darker, but the novelty of this has long since worn off for me.

Here's an old pair of mine that has been washed countless times. I like them:

You only need to wash them when they get dirty or smell.

And this is for raw denim, not the cheap department store jeans that are already washed and blasted. Do whatever you like with them.

i own a few pairs of japanese denim jeans and this is a gross understatement of what washing does. Washing will make the fabric softer which long term will lead to the denim losing shape and easily tearing.

The crotch thing is true, but it's easily solved by spot washing once in a while.

found this little gem btw, though its from thedailymail:

And according to an Australian study, even if you wear your jeans five days a week, no one will ever notice.
For her Master’s thesis, Melbourne University student Tullia Jack found 30 volunteers who agreed to wear their jeans at least five days a week for three months, reported Adelaide Now in July last year.
While half of the participants stopped wanting to wear their jeans at the six-week mark, the other half keep wearing them unwashed even after the experiment was over.
According to the study, at the three-month mark, the jeans didn't smell, or look that dirty.
'They just smell like people,'Ms Jack explained to the Globe and Mail. Scientic findings reported that once odorous 'bacteria reached a peak population,' it stopped growing.
Ms Jack said the study showed that, to save the environment, people should be washing their jeans. 'When you take something off, air it out,' she said. And for stains, she added: 'Spot it clean.

I have a few pairs of Levi's that are a couple years old and have never been washed. I don't wear them that much though.

If I wash them they'll shrink just enough to cause them to look weird, at least to me. Right now they're the perfect length.

Blood Red Sky said:
If I'm going out, I wear a skirt or dress. Which I then wash.

Cause denim? I don't understand.

I used to sell denim, and let me tell you that it is not all that necessary to give them full on washes after every single wear. Despite my knowledge about this, my wife still washes them far more than I would like unfortunately. Just means I will have to buy more jeans next year.

What about towels, guys? I know people who balk at the idea of reusing a towel for more than one shower, but I go like 1-2 weeks before replacing/washing mine.
