Lez talk mechanical keyboards

Got a Corsair Strafe Cherry Brown (Red Lighting) for xmas from my dad and so far I'm really liking it. It feels great to use. He gave me the receipt should I want to change it and part of me is tempted to get something like the K70 RGB for the multi colour. But then I'm not actually sure if I'd ever really use the multi colours, I'll admit I'm more of a tinkerer and just want to mess around with it :P Either way I'm very happy to finally get a mechanical keyboard after wanting one for so long.

For the price of the k70, theres the CM masterkeys s rgb, and I think it's a better buy, for example, it has a standard bottom row (3x1.25+6.25+4x1.25) and not (1.5+1+1.25+6.25+1.25+2x1+1.5). It'll make finding keysets a lot easier.

Also, has anyone ordered a keyset from Varmilo? Finding iso-esp is almost imposible, so I'll have to order from them, but I don't know how much it'll cost.

Anyone have experiennce with mx cherry natural whites? I'm currently using and love the corsair k70 with mx cherry reds but have been wanting a 60% for awhile and see the pok3r RGB natural white in stock on amazon in my price range. How do natural whites compare to reds? i've heard it is similar feel just a bit more force required to actuate the keys? So it should feel similar?

Have any of you guys seen this? https://www.youtube.com/shared?ci=Dqjyx9Vty0A

I wish someone sold an aftermarket keycap like this. I've seen a similar print at one of the online websites but the sanding this guy does makes the illumination look and feel spectacular.

There are definitely translucent keys that are intended to have a similar effect, but they don't have opaque walls like that one. I've got to admit, thats a nice look. I'm not too into the RGB look, I didn't even install LEDs in my plank because its a little over the top. But that is quite nice with the light just coming out the top.

Switched my Ducky One White over to blank keycaps yesterday. Really liking the look.

If they carry over more than just the name, then they are a similar feel to Blues, but quieter.

I just bought the Logitech G910, I'm new to PC gaming and it was pretty on the shelf (lol). Whats everyones take on this keyboard?

I've messed around with that one in-store a few times. Can't say I'm a huge fan of it aesthetically, but the Romer-G seems like a neat switch and I haven't heard any reports of it having any major design flaws or build quality problems. Most MK enthusiasts aren't paying a ton of attention to it since they're focused on things you can customize.

I ended up getting a Razer Ornata Chroma for Christmas and even thought it's not technically mechanical (ok, not mechanical at all), personally I like the feel of it more than any mechanical I've tried. The shallow keycaps and short travel along with clickiness that's not unbearably loud is a great combo. Plus, as gaming keyboards go, the design is pretty subdued and doesn't feel out of place in a regular-ass adult office.

I think linustechtips in youtube reviewed that 2nd keyboard.
One thing I've noticed about videos of the first one is that there isn't really a "click" to the keys, just travel. I'm wondering if I'll miss the click feel or if it'll just eventually get annoying and the subtle keys are the better move for me...

I received my Leopold FC750R with Cherry MX Browns, and it's great. The build quality is spectacular, and I like that extra keycaps were included which cover the blue LEDs on the caps lock/scroll lock.

It'll take some getting used to, I've dropped from 135 WPM to 111, but it already feels better using it after about an hour. This is probably due to the smaller enter key.

Maybe I will upgrade to Topre in the future. I was debating getting the FC980C, but it was £90 more and I wasn't sure if Topre switches would be good for gaming.

What do you guys think of Filco Majestouch 2?

Thinking of getting the TKL Brown Ninja, since Logitech doesn't want to release a TKL version of G810 >:(

So i went in on the Pok3r RGB with nature whites. I had wanted a 60% for ages but couldn't afford one that I liked until now. This thing is just so cool. I'm coming from reds so the extra weight for the whites threw me off a bit at first but now that I'm adjusting I prefer them. Very happy with my purchase!

I would get a Leopold FC750R or FC980M.

The Leopold uses PBT keycaps, instead of the ABS ones on the Filco. It also has a sound dampening mat.

hmm would the Filco build quality be better though?
am thinking of getting a MJT2 to replace my ageing MJT1 and then replace it with PBT Keycaps

I would consider Filco standard quality. The Leopold are really well built in general and as it was said before, it has a dampening material inside and PBT keycaps (and also detachable USB cable).

I don't know where you would be buying your keyboard, but looking at X-treme Solution's website they have Leopold FC750R for S$199 and Filco Majestouch 2 Tenkeyless for S$189. Since you are planning on replacing the keycaps anyway, I'd say get the Majestouch 2 if you won't be taking the keyboard around with you. If you intend on taking the keyboard around with you, I'd consider the Leopold for it's detachable cable.

As a owner of a Leopold FC660M, I have to say that the effect of the sound dampening mat installed into Leopold keyboards isn't particularly noticeable. It changes the sound of bottoming out the keys somewhat, but the difference in actual sound volume is not discernible.

omg :O how did you know I'm from Singapore? I really like my Filco MJ1. I would not change it if not for the chattering keys.

thinking at getting an alu top plate or something too :/

don't think I would be lugging it around. a Leopold has similar build quality I suppose? I have the impression that Filco has one of the best build quality around (except for their awful ABS keycaps... which understandably is a decision to keep prices down)

if I were to get the MJ2, I'll probably pull off the PBC keycaps from my Filco MJ1 (ordered them via a geekhack MO). Unless I can find engraved PBC keycaps (should have ordered when they were available on vRz)

Anyone have a suggestion on a mechanical keyboard with RGB, nice clicky keys and volume/media controls? I have a Logitech Orion and it has everything I want except for good keys. I tried a Razer and couldn't believe how good and satisfying the key clicks were on it but they don't have any media keys which is important to me.

Does anyone know of any boards similar to how the Razers feel or what kind of key types I should be looking for?

What about the Corsair K70 RGB?

I checked your profile, you happen to have your location listed which helps when giving purchasing advice. It helps a bit that I actually lived in Singapore for a few years.

Leopold keyboards are high quality with the steel backplate and thick PBT keycaps. The main differences between Leopold and Filco keyboards is that Leopold uses Cherry Corporation's G99 stabilizers while Filco uses wire stabilizers (commonly referred to as Costar stabilizers, as they are common on Costar-produced keyboards such as the Filco MJ2) and the detachable cable on the Leopold. Some consider the Cherry stabilizers to be "mushy" in feeling.

Since you said you wouldn't be lugging the keyboard around and you already have a set of keycaps to swap in, I'd say go for the Filco MJ2. As for engraved PBT keycaps, X-treme Solution's website lists Ducky engraved PBT keycap in Green/White and Pink/White colorways.

If you don't mind the media keys being access via a Fn key then maybe the Masterkeys Pro S or L? (I prefer them accessed this way personally, less key "clutter")

Pro-tip, check reviews from users before buying a Corsair mech, they have famously had some truly appaling build quality issues in the past that show up medium term, and missed by most review sites.

Get an aluminum M-65 from RAMA

Not out yet though
I see on their site they're selling individual keys for like $75. I fear to see the price of that whole board.

I have a question I would like to ask the black widow chroma keyboard owners.

recently I wanted a mechanical keyboard and I was able to score this one for around 90$ new.

however, my brother has this cool effect on his razer keyboard that is called "fire" under the lighting effect that I cant find it on my keyboard.

my question is, is there some way I can download that effect ? I tried some of youtube but nothing even close.

As someone who has used rubber domes all my life, will I really notice the difference between a Logitech G610 and a Ducky One? Only difference I can tell is the Ducky has slightly thicker key caps.

I prefer the look of the Logitech and the media controls, and it's a bit easier to get in Australia. I doubt I'll ever customise either, so the nonstandard keys won't matter.

But if the Ducky One is just straight up better I'll probably go with that. For the same price I could also get the Ducky with blue/grey PBT keys, but the blue keys are so garish next to the grey :(

Are those sub-$50 "mechanical" keyboards I've been seen on amazon lately with non-Cherry keys actually worth it? Or are they just kinda coasting on the popularity of mechanical keyboards these days?

I've wanted a keyboard that takes up less space so I ordered a Corsair Vengeance K65 with Cherry MX Reds for $60, but I was sorely tempted to get this. The fact that I've never heard of Drevo and the non-Cherry keys turned me off from it.

They are probably fairly decent boards, unless you get a lemon. Some non-Cherry switches are very good, others are not (main issue outside of outright failure is consistency of the feel from switch to switch). Personally I'm a big fan of Gateron.

I would assume that other than the switches, the cost-cutting probably comes from thinner key caps, case and PCB, as well as possibly cheaper soldering operations. So the board may not be as sturdy feeling, and it may develop some reliability issues like certain keys not always registering, etc.

I doubt you'd notice that big of a difference, and if you did, it would be somewhat down to personal preference level stuff, like which key-caps felt better to you. The thicker ones might feel slightly better, but without having tried them it's hard to say if you'd even notice. I have a board with thicker PBT and really like those, but also have a board with thinner ABS, and still like that quite a bit as well. Also, you're definitely going to notice how the board looks!

I used a ducky Shine 5 with black ABS keycaps and replaced those with white Vortex PBT keycaps. The difference in feel is negligible in my opinion. The huge advantage though is the fact, that the ABS keycaps wore off after about 6 months and started to get a shiny look (Similar like when you type with greasy fingers). The PBT keycaps still look identical to when I bought them.

Thanks for the advice! I managed to find a store that had both miraculously, and I ended up preferring the Ducky One so I went with that (not the blue/grey PBT version though). They were the same price. Using it now, it's fantastic! Just what I needed. I don't see myself becoming a keyboard fanatic or anything, but it's good to know that with the Ducky, I can easily replace the key caps once they wear out, and don't have to deal with non-standard fittings.

Plus I went with the transparent blue casing which totally gives me N64/Gameboy vibes haha, I couldn't pass that up!

hope you enjoyed Singapore!

you've gotten me really interested in Leopold keyboards. somewhat tempted by the Leopold FC980. only bummed out by the pad-printing on the keycaps :/

Just got a Ducky One (full size gray & blue PBT keycaps) MX Brown switches. My first mechanical. Going to be using this one at the office.

Thinking about getting a 60% keyboard for at home. Maybe the Poker 3? The all white with RGB backlighting looks really cool and I hear it's a solid build.

I believe Leopold uses laser printing for their keycaps. The FC980M variants (or at least those sold here in Europe) come with side-printed keycaps, which makes legend wear a nonissue.

Just bought one of those just with blues instead. The build quality is above that of my Ducky Shine 5 and the keyboard itself has a really nice weight to it.

Just note that it may take some time getting used to the 60% layout. I'm still "struggling" with having to push the FN key to use Delete (I didn't really think I'd been using it that much before switching).

I just got a Azio with brown switches for my Mac and it's been really nice so far. I found that the travel of the keys alone is the only feedback I really needed, having them click too would probably drive me crazy after a while.

One thing that worried me was when I started playing Hacknet, and it would miss keypresses left and right...but typing here has zero issues, maybe it's the lag of the game or something? Also looking for other typing games like that and Epistory, too, they've been fun with a nice keyboard.

Is there any local store in Singapork selling Leopolds, I don't mind a day trip lol

My poor coolermaster quickfire rapid-i leds keep burning out. It is a known issue with the keyboard, and at this point i think i have replaced about 10 leds on it.

I was thinking of getting the masterkeys pro, but didnt know if coolermaster had solved their LED issues. Anyone here have any experience with the masterkeys?

I've been hearing about mechanical keyboards on gaf and thought they were some impressive thing, then I went to the store and tried some out. They're just clicky keyboards. WAT.

I'm not sure what you were expecting. They're generally just a high quality keyboard that's easier to repair, possible to customize, and likely to last you a lot longer than a membrane board while staying in much better shape through their lifespan.

Also, they're not all clicky.

X-treme Solution should be selling some. They are located at Sim Lim Square (1 Rochor Canal Road), unit #02-21.
According to their website, MX Switch variants of Leopold keyboards are listed at S$199.
There are probably other stores selling Leopold keyboards in Singapore as well.

The board will be around 250$. Keycaps not included.

Keep in mind, folks will need to build it themselves as well.

So far his releases have gone up on mass drop when they go on sale

keyclack.com

It will be a raffle to be able to buy one. I believe it drops tomorrow.
