Lez talk mechanical keyboards

Which would you guys recommend?

CM Quickfire Pro for $80 and $20 rebate or
Leopold Linear Touch for $100

Is the Leopold worth the extra $40?

This is probably a dumb question, but are there any quiet mechanical keyboards? My fiance complains that it sounds like I'm using a machine gun whenever I have to type something on my blackwidow, heh.

Some are louder than others, is the blackwidow blue switches ?

Yeah, the non-stealth Blackwidow uses MX Blues, which are the second loudest switch overall because there's a mechanism in them that's actually designed to produce an audible click. The quietest would probably be MX Black or MX Red with touch-typing and dampeners.

I have a Corsair K90, which I think is a perfect match for how I use my PC (mainly for gaming, I use another machine for majority of my main computing), it has Red switches, very sensitive, only makes a sound when it bottoms out. The main negative for me with this particular keyboard is that the macro keys and function keys aren't mechanical, which for a keyboard of this price is rather disappointing, but not a deal breaker.

It is also very well built, has a great wrist rest and fantastic backlight that can go rather bright. (Also, the volume scroll wheel thing is really nice).

Yeah... I'm waiting for the Corsair K95 update to be launched. Bloody buggers. Teased it to us at CES, and we're still waiting on it! Cmon! It's been nearly 4 months.

How do you guys keep you keyboards clean?

I am of course typing this on a mechanical keyboard - 'cause not a peasant - but its hard work pressing down the keys what with the two pounds of gunk in there.

Remove keys and use compressed air.

I spilled a drink on my filco, and a few of the switches themselves stick (push them down and them some back up slooooooooooowly)- can I clean switches themselves, or am I fucked?

Don't touch it or the K70 unless it's confirmed that the key repeat firmware bug is gone though.

Yes, do NOT use these keyboards. It's the most frustrating keyboard I've ever had and I will never buy a Corsair keyboard ever again.

I accidentally broke my Pause key. Is it hard or expensive to repair? I never use that key anyway but it looks bad now.

You can buy replacement MX brown switches on ebay, but I can't tell what type of keyboard you have. I've only ever been able to replace switches (without re-soldering and removing the PCB) on Cherry boards and KBC/KBT boards; filco boards required screwdrivers and soldering etc. If your keyboard is plate-mounted then replacing a switch will involve a complete teardown of the board and unsoldering the switch/led and re-soldering the replacement.

It certainly doesn't look like your keyboard is plate-mounted, so it should be easy enough.

Don't. Eat. On. Your. PC desk.
Periods go at the end of sentences. You can just use the spacebar to separate words.

One of the major issues with the current Corsair keyboards, outside of not being fully mechanical, is really horrible firmware. If you really like this giant monster, then at least wait until they are out in the wild for a bit. Corsair has pretty much dropped the ball on every bit of software/firmware they've released for accessories, including the mice.

oh man :( its dead sexy though.

For shame.

What's the best bang for buck mechanical keyboard?

Rosewill full-size mechanicals are like $70 on newegg right now, so probably those. Unless they've changed their manufacturing since I last looked. Lots of very good stuff in the $100 range too, which is still around where you need to go to get tenkeyless or smaller instead of full-size. Still waiting on either Rosewill or one of these gamer-pandering companies to wise up and start selling tenkeyless versions.

Edit - there does seem to be a lot of talk about USB soldering issues with these newer RKs. That being the case maybe you should look into the $100 range; lots of 'boards in that bracket are pretty much guaranteed to last for years, whereas I don't have that kind of faith in anything Razer makes (which is one of the other 'boards commonly in the $70-80 range).

How about the Steelseries 6GV2?

Those are solid 'boards, but I think MSRP they're still $100 which I don't think would win me over versus something else in that range like a Leopold. Plus you have no real choice of switch type, and blacks are one of my least favorite types of switch.

A couple of weeks ago I picked up a Quickfire Rapid with blues. I got the unbranded version. I tried the brown switches next to the blues in a store, and I think initially I preferred the brown switches. However, I impulse purchased the one with blue switches later since it the price was so low.

It took a little getting used to, but I love typing on this thing. It feels amazing. The clicking sounds are very pleasant, and not nearly as loud as I was expecting them to be (unless it is late and you're browsing porn while your wife is sleeping).

Okay, it's nearing the end of April and still no K95. What the hell... Wouldn't be surprised if Corsair pulls that Hong Kong premium bullcrap with this too.

Definitely looking at the TESORO DURANDAL

Or the NIGHTHAWK X9

The Lamonster swears by his Nighthawk x9. I was sorely tempted but the price was just too much for me.

On a similar note, I just got an email from Corsair saying that the k70 is available now.. except it isn't. So who knows. The k70 looks like everything I want on paper.

They have it up now for sale. They have UK, US, French, German, and Nordic layouts.

Ah there it is :)

My wife would kill me if I bought a second full price mechanical keyboard right now. I'll wait for a couple reviews and a sale but that keyboard will be mine eventually.

It's like perfect for me:

- no macro keys
- built in wrist rest
- fully mechanical
- backlit
- USB port on the top
- media keys

As long as the firmware isn't crap this time...

I'm going to roll the dice with the Corsair K70 only because it's a pain in the ass to find a mechanical keyboard with dedicated media controls.

How big of a difference is there between cheaper mechs like the Quickfire Pro and the higher end stuff like the Ducky DK9008 or a Filco? Is it mostly a difference in how long it will last?

Supposedly the QuickFire Rapid is a rebranded Filco. Same OEM.

Do cherry switches 'break-in' a bit? I got a QuickFire Rapid over a year ago and just got the Quickfire TK a few weeks ago, both blue switch. The new TK is noticeably stiffer than my old Rapid. It's not a huge difference but I prefer the looser feel.

Either way I think I'm going to order a Stealth with Brown switches soon, and then, if I adjust to those, maybe switch over to Red. Blues are getting a bit loud and stiff for me. Especially the new TK. Don't want to try dampeners since I'm afraid they'll change the feel too much.

The blues have a harsh metallic sound if you're bottoming out the keys, but I think it's nice if I'm wearing headphones. Overall, though, I prefer browns.

Is the twenty dollar price difference worth it for a 6GV2 w/ Red cherry MX switches ($99.99) as opposed to 6GV2 w/ Black cherry MX switches ($79.99)?

Any KBT Race (or even Pure) users in this thread? Thinking about getting one -- but the size and layout would be new to me. Want to know the learning curve.

Love the way it looks.

Had my Filco Majestouch 2 for almost a year now and I don't regret the purchase at all. My brother was down for the weekend and brought his PC with his old school Microsoft internet keyboard and let me tell you, I could NEVER go back to that. So glad I made the upgrade, no matter how awkward it felt in the beginning.

Have a Race, picked it up based on the advice someone in this thread. It's fucking amazing.

But, I've been a tenkeyless convert for quite awhile. I do keep a full sized board behind it for when I need to work from home.

I'm rocking a MaxKeyboard right now and I love it. It's just that the compact look and proposed feel of the Race has me really intrigued.

How long did it take you to get used to it from a regular layout?
