Lez talk mechanical keyboards

Girlfriend got me the Logitech G710+ for my birthday. I find that a lot of people discount the Logi name as being overpriced trash but I quite like this keyboard. Love the dedicated media keys. She knew those are important to me and decided on this instead of the Razer I think it was.

I can't speak to the quality of the keyboard itself, but it's using MX Browns, which are great switches. I'd probably buy a Logitech over a Razer too given they're using the same switch.

Yea the only thing I see online is people being skeptical because this is Logitech's first mech keyboard. Understandable but it's working great for me so far. Been a month now and still getting used to typing though.

i need to get a TKL version of this. But with a less clicky sound. these make two much noise. I think I have blue switches but I am not sure. I used the box to kill a spider and then threw it out. jesus. FUCKING SPIDER!!!

That "mini" is pretty much an original Poker with backlighting. Kind of neat, though I'd probably hate the keycaps.

If you want to know what kind of switches you have, just pop one of the keycaps off; the stem underneath is colored.

Well, I went and bought another keyboard. Birthday present to myself! That's how I'll rationalize it, anyway. I blame Jira. When he PM'd me about keyboard stuff earlier this year I happened across the fact that EK had the non-printed MX versions for sale finally, and ever since it was just a matter of time.

Been eyeing these FC660s ever since they hit the market. The layout just looks like the closest I've ever wanted in a 60-75%; my Poker w/ Reds has been my main workhorse for over two years now, but even today I'm not 100% on doing Fn arrow keys on WASD. Was even worse about it on the HHKB Pro 2. Plus lower profile PBT stock keycaps... too damn nice at that price.

I guess I won't be able to do any full keycap swaps on it since Leopold yet again likes to fuck with people and release stupid spacebars. Even if it had matching stems I'd basically need two L Shifts since R Shift is shortened to make room for the arrow cluster. Probably what I'll wind up doing is just doing a two-tone and replace only the alpha cluster and arrow keys. Maybe the Del/Ins on their little island. Hopefully I don't get burned in the Cherry lottery.

If you really can't pay more than that, you'll pretty much have to wait for one of Razer or Cooler Master's MX Brown boards to go on sale.
I can pay more its just that I would prefer to pay as little as possible. I don't need the numpad, USB pass through or backlighting, so why should I pay for features I don't need, you know? :P I don't even really need labeled keys except maybe the ones above the arrow keys

And thanks for suggestions I'll look into those :)

If you keep tabs on the classifieds section of Geekhack you could probably get a good condition Leopold FC200R or something similar around such a price. They're $90 before S/H at Elitekeyboards.

There should be some interesting mechanical keyboard new coming from this year's CES in the next few days. Including CoolerMaster's new TKL Topre that has Cherry MX-compatible stems. Sounds neat.

spent 200 bucks on my ducky shine 3 from ebay. Fuck me.

When you get it, oh boy, you'll love it. Well, i hope so, i love mine and everyone who has tried it has said how much nicer it is than the one they have at home without me even mentioning that it's mechanical etc. What switches did you go for? I went for MX Brown and the Magenta/Hot Pink backlights. Won't be losing my board at LAN parties :)

Enjoy and welcome to the rabbit-hole :)

Wallah, that sounds tempting. I'll have to keep a closer eye on CES over the next few days. TKL Topre with MX stems? My poor wallet.

What do Topres feel like?
Soft and smooth is a good way to describe them. It's very pleasant with none of the mushiness one gets from conventional rubber domes. Another part of the appeal of Topre keyboards are their PBT keycaps with dye-sublimation printing that never get shiny or wear off with use. It's top-notch quality all around.

Man I wish there was a way I could try them out instead of blind buying a $120+ keyboard. I've tried all of the Cherry MX types, so at those sorts of prices I'm inclined to stick with what I know.

Also always been curious about ALPS.

Nice thing about Topre-switch 'boards is that if you wind up not liking them, they're really easy to sell pretty much immediately on a site like Geekhack. You'd get most of your cost back.

I've got a few Topre 'boards around and I personally wouldn't say the switch is worth the money. Typically, they're a more worthwhile proposition when they come in 'boards with a particular layout for a specific purpose (HHKB Pro 2) or when the entire unit has a very strong level of quality (Realforce). The stock keycaps on a Realforce alone are generally worth about $100.

On something like the Leopold FC660 though, where the Topre version costs about $80-90 more but has no other meaningful differences (or if anything has slightly worse build quality), I can't see the point unless you are really in love with the switch. I'm personally not, even though they are certainly great typing switches.

my Filco needs some good keycaps!

anyone seen Black on Black (White on Black is fine too) Thick PBT either Doubleshot or Dyesub?

This group buy on GH will be open until the 15th, maybe get in on it:

http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=50935.0

As for the USB to PS/2, those things are a dime a dozen. I'd just get one off Monoprice or Amazon.

I jumped on that groupbuy! was hoping to see if I have other ready options.. imsto or Vortex or anything

hmm so I don't really need a Filco one right?
I can only find this on Amazon

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000A0K2JO/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Ah nice. Yeah I don't know of any other black on blacks that are thick PBT floating around right now. You should PM Imsto and just ask him directly because he'll tell you what he has on hand.

There seems to be a bunch of USB to PS/2 adapters on Amazon, that one looks as good as any of them. Filco doesn't use a specific one other than maybe they have their plastic branded. I don't even use one anymore.

Hey GAF,

I'm going to buy the Cooler Master QF with blacks
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823129005

unless I get a strong suggest for the Corsair k70 with reds
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823816010
I'm really interested in the bezel of the k70. LOOKS like its incredible easy to clean as there's no under belly for dust to collect. For me this would be a big plus.

Don't want to spend much more that $100. (student)

I just got a quick fire a few months ago, while I really love the solid construction and the feel of the switches (Browns) I think they are a bit too light, but maybe your blacks would feel better to me.

Only real complaints:

1: the printing on the most used keys (wasd) seems to be fading a bit already. That or it's staining, either way disappointing.

2: I really miss my 10-key. Like a LOT more than I thought I would.

So for me it would be hard to totally push either, the red switches seem to light to me (same force as my browns but no "bump") but that might not bother you, but now that i know how much I miss it I wouldn't buy a board without a 10 key.

Hmmm, thanks for the feedback. I think CM offer a 10 version. I've only ever owned a DAS keyboard with blues (the noise was too much), so my actual experience with cherry switches is limited to a few tries at reds and browns. But blacks sound like they're for me

thanks man! guess I'll just wait out for Ivan's groupbuy!

I've been using the Razer BlackWidow Ultimate ver.2013. It's pretty incredible and I absolutely love the matte finish. Best keyboard I've ever used. Although I've heard great things about Ducky.

So, I got this new thing:

gal_2000_jk-0340_aufsqns4h.jpg
Okay, it's a chiclet style keyboard but I didn't want to shelf out for the G710+ when we will get a MX compatible, tenkeyless Topre by Coolermaster. Hmmmmm, Topre switches. Never used them. But the descrption alone let's me expect all the silence of rubber with all the goodness of an MX.
On top we get MX compatible stems so I will propably buy an US board and then slap German keys onto it.

Also, today I modded my mouse switches to be more silent and responsive. Big success.

Is there such a thing as a Mechanical Controller?

The Microsoft build quality on 360 controllers are pretty poor in my opinion, and I'm sick of buying them. Is there an alternative?

I believe Razer's 360 controllers have microswitched face buttons and bumpers but they've got some build quality issues as well, unfortunately. Don't know of any beyond that, apart from Cherry MX-based arcade stick buttons.

I just got the cm quickfire stealth with cherry browns. I wanted the blues but the sound just put me off. My god it's sex on my fingertips. I grew up typing on rubber domes and now all I want to do is continue to type on these mechanical babies. It does take a little bit to get use to as do all new keyboards but man it just feels so smooth.

Sorry guys, I don't need a merry go round of lights on my keyboard, you all can have your light up keyboards.

Took some getting used to but the pad is the best for fighting games ever. Also, awesome clicking all around. Of course, it misses a lot of features of modern controllers like analogues but if this thing suffices your needs it's glorious.

Hows that pad for pacman? The DS4 is a huge leap over the 360 controller but I still need somethin dedicated to the pacmonster.

Yeah, they have clicky switches. They are basically optimized for FPS and similar play. The "Tournament Edition" controller's digital pad is actually completely unusable for 8-way directional input, because it's optimized for good feedback on 4-way inputs which many games use like individual buttons. I can also confirm crappy build quality firsthand - I had to exchange my Razer TE controller after only a few hours of play because the analog stick inputs started drifting horribly. I have maybe 15 hours of play on the replacement, time will tell but I wouldn't bet on it lasting.

FC660M just got here. Typing on it as we speak.

The stock keycaps feel great; I wasn't sure how the quite flat, low-profile style (compared to Cherry profile or something) on these stock keycaps would go over but it actually suits me very well. The layout is pretty much what I expected - just a better version of the Poker. Unlike the Poker II though, I can still swap Ctrl and Caps Lock via hardware, and use that key like god intended.

The build quality is actually pretty impressive to me given the price point. Feels like a brick, no flex in the casing, no wobble at all in the keys, plate-mounted, and some really solid & snappy flip feet on the base. The flip feet even have their own rubber stops, which is something some pricier 'boards like to cheap out on sometimes. As usual, my primary concern will be with the USB connector since it has a removable cable; with any 'board with a removable cable, that is typically the first point of failure (LEDs nonwithstanding). Even that though feels quite sturdy compared to some older Leopold 'boards. Overall I'd put it just a notch above a stock Filco in terms of build quality due to the superior flip feet construction. Really impressed in this regard.

The Fn layer is also really nice; the addition of the dedicated arrow keys actually cleans up a lot of the crowding that happens a lot with Fn layers. The right Fn in particular is really nice because Fn sits right next to Left Arrow, and the arrow cluster becomes Home/Page Up/Page Down/End in the Fn layer, giving you very easy access to those four keys compared to most Fn layers. With the dedicated Delete and Insert keys on top of that, pretty much every key that I'd typically have trouble finding in the Fn layer is easy as pie to remember.

Really glad I picked this up. Good enough that I think it'll put my Poker - which has been my primary driver for about two years - into early retirement effective immediately.

Just dropping in to say that I have caved in and finally bought myself a much coveted mechanical keyboard, Steelseries6V2.

There is now no going back for me, these Cherry Black Mx switches feel godly, gaming feels totally different now.

As something you work with and touch everyday (lol no) I say this has definitely been worth the 80 € investment. Highly recommended.

i just got a K70 with cherry reds, i think i should of gotten a keyboard with a much firmer springs then the cherry reds. I can type pretty fast with the new keyboard compare to my old microsoft 4000 egro keyboard but i am bottoming out the keys when i type. I forgot how everything is so compact on these keyboards i almost favor the 4000 for typing because i have so much space for my hands. So does anyone know who makes the K70's?

Corsair makes them

You can get noise dampening o-rings which will help with the sounds and reduce the force of the collision when you actually bottom out. Highly recommended.

You can get them here

I have had a SteelSeries 6Gv2 since August of 2012, and have really liked it.

However, for the last few months, I've had to put up with the keyboard not quite working correctly. Sometimes if I press a key, the letter will register as multiple key presses. As you can imagine, this is extremely frustrating. Typing this post was a pain. Typing my passwords can be horrible, since I have to type it in multiple times, or be very careful making sure that one key press is actually detected as one key press.

I'm wondering if anybody has heard of these issues before? I've had a look online and have only found a couple of people with these issues. I have submitted a ticket on SteelSeries' support website, but have been waiting 3 days for a response. I just hope I can get a replacement.

Sorry for the late reply but what exactly are you looking for in a PacMan controller? It's the best pad for 8-way, with PacMan I imagine you want something more like a Dualshock with split keys for the directions?
Otherwise, you will be fine.

Oh shit. Does yours also have Cherry Black switches? Mine still going strong after twoo weeks.

Yeah, Cherry Black switches.

I don't think I like typing on Black switches when writing things; I think I need the "tactile feedback" of the Blue. However this is the only mechanical keyboard I've ever used, so I don't know what this "tactile feedback" feels like.

Maybe Browns would be more suitable. I've only had Reds so I know the feeling. Not quite sure if another switch type would be better for me.

The wiggly USB connector on my tenkeyless Black Widow with MX Browns is driving me crazy. It's about a year old and I'm not sure if I have the warranty card it came with. Chances of getting it repaired or replaced by Razer? I don't remember what their normal policy is for this stuff.

If I can't get it replaced, I might do something crazy and put a chunky locking connector on there and make a custom cable.

I use variable-weight Topre switches and Browns. Recently my workplace IT had some new-in-box Filcos with Blacks lying unused for some reason, so I figured I'd try one for a day. It only took minutes before I wrapped it back up and plugged the Topre back in. I thought I'd prefer any Cherry switch to scissor keys or rubber domes, but I was so wrong. Good scissor key or especially good rubber dome before Blacks any day. Unfortunate that no one's trying to do good rubber dome boards - like tenkeyless, NKRO, etc. - below the price point of mechanicals.
