I just returned my Hisense Q8 due to a faulty motherboard and have just received my refund. Needless to say I'm done with Hisense.

I have an Xbox series X and PS5 so gaming features and HDMI 2.1 is important to me.

Before I make a decision I wanted to get my fellow gaffers opinion.

I was about to buy the LG C1 today but I have been reading so many conflicting things. How is the HDR brightness? Apparently the LG doesn't get very bright and can only be viewed during the night? The other option is the Samsung QN85A which has a searingly bright panel that makes HDR pop but suffers from contrast issues.

Not sure what to get It's important I future proof myself because I'm tired of upgrading TVs every damn year when technology becomes obsolete

Get a nice CRT. I miss those damn huge heavy things. LGC1 will have the best looking contrast and abyss dark blacks. Potential for burn in. The Samsung will look great but the image doesn't look as good as the OLED. But it's Samsung so it may break in 3 years. Really there is no perfect TV and it sucks.

I read that the future is micro led, so we always focked. But for the time being choose the one that is has better response? _ I think you and Jaguar Victory pretty much resumed the main differences between the two TVs, so i would be going with the one that gives better performance in games, has better game mode features.

I'm pretty much in love with my LGCX. You can get one of those and save some money... But you might want to wait a little while longer until Sony's new OLED is out and tested of you're wanting a brand new TV and willing to pay top dollar.

Either way, I think LG OLED are the best in class for gaming. At least mine was Digital Foundry's best TV last year. I kind of stopped getting educated on the subject after I got my TV But, I highly suggest following Vincent Teoh/ HDTV Test on Twitter and YouTube. His coverage is the best.

When you are choosing between an OLED and a high end LCD you are making a subjective choice where one is not clearly better than the other.
However, I would strongly recommmend an LG OLED. While it is not as bright as good LCDs, human eyes are more sensitive to contrast than bightness, for which our eyes can adapt.
When it comes to burn in, the Rtings burn in test is running on 7 series, and the most significant burn in problem they have with the red color has been solved in the 8 series, and the overal burn in resistance has been improving (accorcing to LG) every generation. The only situation I would recommend against an OLED would be in a room where you have direct sunlight shining on the TV.

OLED - LG C1 / Sony A80J
LCD - Sony X90J
Mini LED - Samsung QN90A

All are very good options for HDMI 2.1 TVs. Each have pros & cons, different costs & sizes.

I'd avoid Hisense. LG, Sony, Samsung are the 3 best brands in TVs right now. (Panasonic too, but they're not in the USA so idk.)

C1 is dark. Even in absolute darkness you can clearly see the need for more brightness. Ok TV for 1k. Don't expect miracles. But yeah, for 1k... what do you expect? Buy it, use it, throw away after it inevitably burn in. No such thing as a perfect TV right now.

Ballicks, i have CX and in the evenings its an absolute fucking stormer of a set, inky unmatchable blacks and super bright HDR highlights and the C1 is meant to be brighter ffs, i mean what are you expecting from a TV.. to have your room lit up like a floodlight everytime the telly shows the sun?? depends on your viewing habits, most of mine is in the evening, most of the shows i watch are dark, gritty type stuff and they look phenomenal on an OLED and i've watched plenty of day time cartoons on it with the kid to appreciate the incredible colours and pop and burn in? fuck off these arent 1st or 2nd gen sets

My Hisense is a 75 inch so it's going to sting going to a 65 inch. Hopefully the picture quality will more than make up for it.

C9 owner here. The brightness factor is only an issue if you have direct sunlight on your screen, or playing very dark games in a well lit room. As long as you avoid direct sunlight (which you should, no matter the TV) then you should be fine. If its a bright day, I just close the living room curtains and it is absolutely fine. During nighttime the set is amazing, and you really notice the pure blacks. I've had my set for about 2 years now and likely have over 3000 hours of content on it (mixed games and streaming) and no sign of even a little bit of burn in.

The disadvantages of the Samsung are that is does not support Dolby Vision (so you will miss out on that on your XSX, plus Dolby Vision has way more support then HDR10+), and it has only one HDMI 2.1 port, so you are going to have to choose a console for that port (yes PS5 does not have VRR at the moment, but that is going to change in future). The Samsung picture quality also takes a knock in game mode.

Lastly, WebOS is the best Smart TV OS on the market, so that is a nice bonus.

So my recommendation? Get the C1. I am so impressed with this set I am going to go for the C3/G3 in a few years and upgrade to 77 inch as well.

I have both an OLED and a QLED in different rooms. If you intend on watching any 4k HDR movies on the TV then OLED by a country mile.

Even if you're going to just be using it for gaming then I'd still say OLED, just keep the content varied and don't become addicted to some GAAS shite like destiny or rocket league.

I have CX and I don't even have the OLED light and contrast maxed. Its not needed and it lowers risk of burn in. Coming from a Samsung SUHD TV the LG was a huge step up in about everything. Its a plasma fanboys dream come true. Its better than Plasma; lower input lag, 4k, HDR etc.

Well, yeah, but I would never trade OLED for LED. It's like going back in time. I work in Film Visual Effects, and there is nothing even close to OLED in image quality, all reference monitors are OLED for a reason.

I see you went with the C1. Great choice. It’s really the best gaming TV available. Anyone trying to scare you and bullshit you about brightness are full of shit and not to be taken seriously. Once you start gaming and seeing the perfect blacks, instant response times you will see you made the best choice.

Contrast > brightness. Perfect contrast easily overcomes the lack of brightness. There is a reason in blind tests that OLED was usually picked as the brighter TV. I’ll see if I can share the studies.

LG's QNED is supposed to be released this month. How does it compare to Samsung's QLED? I can't find much info on the QNED online.

They are ips panels unless they have a fuck ton of dimming zones expect qn85 levels. The qn90 is still the only lcd panel even worth looking at as of now imo and it is way over priced as of now.

Contrast > brightness. Perfect contrast easily overcomes the lack of brightness. There is a reason in blind tests that OLED was usually picked as the brighter TV. I’ll see if I can share the studies.

once you go OLED you ain't going back. i remember panicking about burn in (yes it is a real issue) and even bought a 5 year warranty to cover it but i don't even care about the burn in anymore cause i know as soon as this TV is done i'll go right back out and get an OLED.

some tips for you (i have a CX):

1. get someone to help you unbox it and get it in place. don't be deceived by how thin it looks. they are HEAVY. i'm a big guy and i struggled lifting it on my own and i got the 55" not the 65" lol

2. bookmark this page: "https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/lg/c1-oled/settings" and use it when setting up the TV

3. disable TruMotion and make sure "Cinema Screen" is On (removes Judder). there is stuttering when watching low refresh rate content like movies which are usually shot at 24fps but you'll get used to it. it's only really noticeable during panning shots. if it really bothers you then enable De-Judder in TruMotion (this will disable Cinema Screen) to increase frame rate interpolation but this comes at the risk of artifacts appearing (usually during fast moving scenes or flickering light sourcings particularly fire)

4. when you are finished using your TV don't turn it off straight away! put it into standby mode and leave it for about 15 minutes. This is because after every 4 hours of usage the TV will do a pixel refresh when you put it into standby mode and this is to help prevent burn in so you want to make sure it can run that. My TV takes about 5-7 minutes to do a refresh but can take longer than that. After 15 minutes you should be good and you'll know it's done cause the TV will make a click noise and the red standby light will come on. The TV also does a more intensive pixel refresh after 2000 hours usage. You can do a manual pixel refresh but don't do that unless you notice any issues with your screen AFTER 200 HOURS usage. you need to give it a couple hundred hours to settle in cause things like vertical banding can appear out the box but will go away after 200 hours or so.

But you should take the Sony new models over LG C1 because the it uses the same C1 panels but the processing image sensor is way better giving a step ahead image quality.

Maybe. I didn't bothered tbh Not saying that I did the right thing, but eh... 1k for a couple of years is an acceptable sacrifice imo. I haven't expected miracles from it or that it will last 10 years.

If you're in the US, the Samsung QN90A range is all VA panels. In EU, only the QN91-95A range are VA panels; here in Aus only the 50" QN90A is a VA panel. The rest (and the QN85A range) are all rubbish ADS(IPS) panels. The exception is the 85" QN85A and QN90A, both of which are guaranteed VA panels everywhere (ADS/IPS panels aren't manufactured in this size).

Source: just spent the past 2 weeks doing a lot of research on this to purchase a new TV.

If you use it for PC gaming then buy the Samsung. No burn in risk and the Samsung supports 4K 120hz VRR over HDMI 2.0 so you don't need to upgrade your video card.

It is impossible to get 4K/120 over HDMIs 18Gbps bandwidth unless you set the color to 4:2:0 sub sampling, which looks TERRIBLE on a monitor and in gaming.

For films I strongly suggest setting TruMotion to Clear. This smooths out the screen, eliminates stutter without introducing the Soap Opera Effect. It’s really the perfect balance. Clear is what it is called on my C9, it may be different on the C1. The stutter is just too unbearably bad without it. Cinema Screen is enabled by default if TruMotion Clear is selected.
Also, judder is the result of 3:2 pull down and is really an issue on 60Hz panels. Since 24 divides evenly into 120, you don’t get judder.

It’s very common to see people get judder and stutter confused.
