Liberal GAF: Who's Your Favorite Republican/Conservative?

It's very difficult to admire politicians because they have little personality to admire outside of their ideological stances. I suppose there are some libertarians in the republican party I can respect for their strength of character or integrity, but I certainly don't admire them because they're ultimately staunch supporters of ideas that are demonstrably bad for society.

Chris Christie

I don't agree with him on a great number of issues, but I admire politicians who speak their mind and aren't afraid to do so.

As a conservative:

Erskine Bowles for the plan he negotiated. Also, Jim Webb is cool for contributing to the Weekly Standard and I would vote for Elizabeth Warren for president as I think she could save the country's financial system from Wall Street by reinstating Glass Steagall.

Huntsman seems...okay, I guess? The problem is that Republicans seem pretty united on their financial and socioeconomic perspectives, and I strongly disagree with them

I agree with both points.

Probably Huntsman.

I think this is a difficult question because it's become rare for a republican break rank and file. Very little compromise in the last 6 or so years. There was once a time when I kinda liked McCain for example.

I'll admit, I'm fascinated by PoliGAF. The most interesting aspect of the group to me is the clear liberal/progressive majority of GAFfers in those threads. The internet tried to tell me earlier this year that a majority of gamers have libertarian leanings, but that doesn't line up at all with what I've seen here in gaming's biggest forum. When a PoliGAF thread comes up, there's a clear majority of liberals/progressives who exchange jokes and observations until the odd conservative or libertarian comes in to be an iconoclast. This is not meant to be critical or negative, just an observation about perception vs. reality.

I bet there are plenty of conservative and libertarians on GAF, I'g guess most of us just don't post in the political threads.

Same here. He didn't have a snowballs chance in hell of winning though.

This always confused me: why didn't Republicans give Huntsman a chance? It can't be the Mormon thing, as we saw later. I picked Huntsman in the OP and at the time, he looked like a more likable and electable version of what the Republicans thought they were getting with Romney. Wasn't the Romney pick supposed to be a compromise to get someone "electable"? Why not pick Huntsman then??

Colin Peterson is a nice enough man. My representative, he recognizes me and stuff now after meeting him so many times.

Technically he's a Democrat but boy is he practically tea party. All his ads were him toting a gun around.

I saw a documentary on Berry Goldwater, I think it was on HBO. He was cool with gays and saw the destructive force of the religious right.

Because you've got to play the role of the literal embodiment of party fanaticism to win a primary let alone an election. Huntsman was too moderate to win either.

Is it stupid? Absolutely.

I'm not really a member of "LiberalGAF," so I'll list my most favourite semi-modern Democrats:

I'm a big fan of Clinton...and Lyndon B. Johnson for his over-arching "Great Society" programs. Despite escalating the Vietnam conflict, he did so much to advance the social welfare of our country. So many great programs that he pushed through along with historic civil rights legislation.

The problem is that any of them that I actually admire would never run for national office. If they did, they would have to say something very very VERY stupid to win, and I would lose all respect for them.

Does Andrew Sullivan count as a conservative these days? In that case, maybe him.

I love his blog and when he's on real time. He's so bi polar on religion though. One minute he's bashing the "Christianists" as he calls them, the next minute he's okay with their right to discriminate.

Richard Posner and Bruce Bartlett. They're still conservative, but they're able to venture outside the conservative echo chamber, which I respect. Cons who just argue with straw men (Red State bloggers/Fox) are pathetic and not worth my time.

Daniel Larison is also good - he's conservative for sure, but he doesn't exhibit that persecution complex that is so popular on the right.

Jon Huntsman and Colin Powell are ok in my book.

Jim Laria is the only Repbulican I have ever voted for and he is the Clerk of Courts for my city.

John Huntsman is where the Republican party needs to be.

Meh, I chose him, but really it's because there's not much left after him. Republicans should probably be where dems are and dems need a shift left.

I guess compromise is marked when both sides leave unsatisfied though so maybe huntsman is perfect for the OP's description.

Yeah, he can be inconsequential on religion some times. Really charismatic and fun to watch in debates/discussions though ....

Colin Powell one of the few sane voices left in the Party. I wish he'd run for president.

Wow . . . I wonder what would happen if he ran for the GOP nomination. He is someone who could win the general . . . but they would hate him as a RINO with the power of a 1000 suns.

so much this, the shift to the right and the proliferation of moral panics over the past 40 years make any current 'conservative' hard to swallow.

EDIT: and to pick one, i'll go david brooks as well.

Collin Powell and Susan Collins are really good choices. I disagreed with Huntsman on some topics, but at least he's not downright evil or purposefully anti-intellectual/science like other 2012 candidates.

I'm definitely not part of LiberalGAF. I lean more conservative, but I'm more libertarian than anything.

But on the liberal side I'd definitely say LBJ. As far as the conservative side, definitely Goldwater.

But current? Fuck if I know, I don't really like anyone today from either party. Rand Paul is OK. EDIT: I don't really consider Ron Paul a republican.

oh, this if for living Republicans... hmmm

I think only Jeb Bush is only the Republican Presidential hopeful who is compassionate enough towards minorities and one of the very few Republicans who has an open tent policy.

I assume you dont live in Florida

"liberal?"

Are we talking about the real meaning of the term, or the american use of the term?
I'd guess the American term?

I don't consider myself "A Liberal" but most of my views are economically and socially progressive, at least when referring to the U.S.

I'm not entirely sure if Dennis Miller even is a Conservative but he's always on those right-wing talk show stations. He was my favorite Weekend Update anchor on SNL.
