Licensed games that had actual effort put into them

Baldur's Gate 2 & Planescape: Torment

They went above and beyond with the Dungeons & Dragons license. Couple of the best games of all times too.

EDIT: Marvel Heroes is a terrific licensed game as well.

Free game that is worth checking out even without any interest in the Marvel comics franchise. Pretty awesome Diablo 2 successor that could have just cashed in on the Marvel name, but actually putting in the effort to feel like playing the actual heroes. Although, it still has a lot of technical issues due to their low budget.

Pretty much any Disney game in the SNES days, and Toy Story 3 was fantastic. I also thoroughly enjoyed Simpsons Hit and Run, and Simpsons Road Rage was also a good Crazy Taxi clone.

Godzilla:Destroy All Monsters-
Great game that's still the format that I hope for future Godzilla games to follow.

Scooby-Doo: Night Of 100 Frights-
A surprisingly good 3d platformer/collectathon.

I also agree with OP that SpongeBob BFBB was really good.

Still the best Spider-Man game.

That cover is terrible though. Literally everything about it is bad. Can't speak for the quality of the actual game.

Can't argue with that. Spider-Man going through his straight edge days. All they had to do was put the Symbiote Wolverine they made for the game somewhere on the cover and it would have sold gangbusters.

Looks like you picked the wrong jpg... let me fix that for you:

I tried playing that a few years past its prime, it didn't hold up very well, at least IMO. I can't remember, but I think that game didn't even have an open city to swing around in. I've also never been a fan of the Ultimate stuff really.

A lot of old Disney, Star Wars, Marvel and Batman games were good. The ones that stick out were:

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron I & II
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic I & II
Spider-Man (PSone), Spider-Man the Movie, Spider-Man 2, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions
Batman (1989), Adventures of Batman & Robin, Batman Begins, Batman Arkham series
X-Men Legends I & II
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Marvel Ultimate Alliance
Hulk Ultimate Destruction
Dragon Ball Z Budokai 1, 2 & 3

Many more. It's just nowadays most people would rather make their own IPs rather than be restricted by the publishers or creators. Unless you are Warner Brothers Interactive of course.

Best wishes.

Aladdin (Mega Drive version) was another fantastic platformer.

I keep seeing people say this but I thought the Megadrive version was crap, except for the great sprite animation. Never understood why so many people prefer it to the SNES version or hold it in high regard at all because to me it just felt like another cash-in.

Being a horror fan, I'll mention the Blair Witch games.

They were made by the people who made NOCTURNE/Blood Rayne, and were better than the movie, if you ask me. Actually very solid games.

There was a Blair Witch horror game? huh... interesting.

Besides the obvious Arkham games, I think Riddick games and movies are fantastic. Also fun fact, Vin Diesel is a founder of the game studio Tigon Studios which was involved in the Riddick games and other games.

Samurai Champloo for PS2 wasn't too bad...I remember somewhat simplistic combat at times, but it certainly filled the hole the show left in my soul when I finished it.

It was absolutely dreadful and I love Spider-Man games.

I have to agree to disagree. The combat in that game was so great, hopping from dude to dude building up a combo, switching between the suits for variety. The voice acting was pretty bad, but I thought the story was fine and fun for what it was.

Also, you put Shattered Dimensions on your list. I only played a demo of that (At Comic-Con I believe), but it seemed completely broken and janky compared to previous titles, especially the "stealth" with Spider Man Noir. I'd be willing to give it another shot but I don't have high hopes.

It's sad that I'm turned off by movie licensed games, I just have an unwarranted prejudice, although there's a lot of effort for most of these titles.

Astro Boy is just such a surprise in how good it was, which was even more disappointing when I learned the PS2 game that came out around the same time was just crap.

But god damn the bosses in this game, my goodness.

Boss fights like that are not something I expected going into the game, and didn't realize til later that this was a Treasure game.

Alien Isolation is the best example of this ever.

It appears you also picked the wrong one.

I'm fully expecting someone to say the PS1 Spider man was the best, which could be the case for many of you, but for me Spider man 2 was the best one.

Jurassic Park 2: The Chaos Continues is a bafflingly well made Contra clone with some interesting mechanics (Mega Man esque mission selection with required timed missions after each one, balancing the dinosaur population) and an absolutely amazing soundtrack. Also incredibly difficult. Much better than Ocean's previous Jurassic Park game.

Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2
The whole Dark Forces/Jedi Knight run
TIE fighter.

Star Wars has had the occasional good licensed game.

Def Jam: Fight For NY is one of the best games of the ps2/xbox/GC era, and it has an astonishing amount of content compared to many modern games, it had a decent fighting system, in game achievements before they were a thing, a very good difficulty adjustment system, amazing character customization and variety of modes. It was a beast of a game that could be enjoyed even if you didn't know 80% of the celebrities in it.

I taked about it in another thread, but the 2003 ps2/xbox Battlestar Galactica game is a very fun and well-produced combat flight game. Balls hard, though!
!
Eh, I feel the lack of check points and the absurd difficulty keep it from being fun, but they certainly tried.

Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee (GC)
Godzilla: Save the Earth (PS2)
Godzilla: The Game (PS4)

The new one is particularly great, its like a love song to the films.

Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikkini Bottom was a lot of fun - a very solid Mario 64-esque platformer. Only wish it looked better (i.e, with a style similar The Simpson's game in the sense that it would look closer to the show, for example).

The best game from the 2000AD license. So much potential missed, but not here. Where's my Judge Dredd open world game Rebellion? Slaine? ABC Warriors? Halo Jones..?

I just played through Rogue Trooper last month; fantastic 3rd person shooter. Handsome aesthetics, exciting gameplay and traversal and those cutscenes--unf. Hidden fucking gem from a relatively obscure IP. Rebellion I <3 U
