Lifting is the new 13.1

Existing takes a toll on the body. Strength training has been shown to increase bone density and overall mobility and quality of life as one ages.

Yes, as compared to a sedentary lifestyle. The argument going on here seems to be nothing or power lifting. There is a lot of room in between, that is probably a lot safer, still providing a lot of the same benefits outside of doing stronglifts or 5x3x1.

I don't know what this even means. 10 reps is not an effective range for building strength. Unless you are an elite level bodybuilder, you are shortchanging yourself training that way.

I'm not trying to build strength. I built that when I was young. I'm concerned with hypertrophy, maintenance and body composition.

If someone runs a marathon you damn well know you are going to hear all about it. The training, the lead up, the website pictures and times, the experience, the nipple lube, the after run beers, the bumper stickers, etc. etc. It never stops, whether you like it or not.

Lifting and going to the gym have become the new marathons of 2014.

What gym they go to, what reps they did this day, who was there, what happened, pictures of muscle milk, picture of noobs, selfies, weights, crossfit injuries, forum memes, etc. etc.

Is there a bumper sticker for weight lifters that is iconic as that 13.1 26.2 one is for runners?

Lol calm down bro, do you even lift? This happens EVERY January.

Also, there is a bumper sticker for weight lifting, always sunny gave us the bicep flyer

I'm just saying any strenuous activity takes its toll on the body, only natural. For instance, squats are great for the body but they still put pressure on the spine. Deadlifts are a great full body workout, but they put pressure on the lower back, even with perfect form, just the nature of the beast.

And what's wrong with putting pressure on these areas? You overdo it and you will get injured, but if you aren't fucking around you will get stronger.

The body gets worn down as it ages. You get an 80 year old man into the squat rack or deadlifting at their 5 rep max, things are probably going to get ugly.

Eh, you don't seem too pleasant either.

Funny as when my friends post such things I'm always happy and encouraging, as one should be.

This idea that training for strength in a 5-7 rep range means you're trying to be an elite powerlifter is crazy. It means nothing of the sort.

If you're concerned with maintenance even you should still be working in the 5-7 rep range.

Probably not if that 80 year old man is healthy, has been lifting for decades, and isn't overdoing it.

Honestly, why does it bother you? What do you think they should be posting about?

Are they saying things like, "anyone who isn't doing what I'm doing is failing at life." or something?

Higher rep range has it's place. But if you aren't benching like 315, 400lb squat, 500 lb deadlift (it's relative so not exactly) then you are probably short changing yourself. I've mostly switched but I still go super heavy on 1 exercise first thing at the gym each day. Bench, deadlift, overhead press, squat.

Im saying that heavy lifting is overdoing it for a man that age, thats all I've been getting at. A person that old would probably do better with a lighter weight at medium reps.

You're inflecting this weird and severe drama into what I said which is pretty baffling, I'm normally not so inclined to get all psychoanalytical on people but it's like I offended you personally because you saw me as insulting your hobby or something. The reason you seem unpleasant is because you went from like 0-100 in a moment from a comment that was at the very least intended to be innocuous.

You really don't know how I interact with my friends, being cordial and encouraging comes so naturally to me I can do it mindlessly, I'm the sort of person that tells white lies to make other people feel better, even when I'm bored out of my mind I'm diplomatic as hell and this leads me to being the person that people feel like they can say anything to. Exercise is good, everyone should do it, and it's nice hearing about the benefits you're experiencing, but not everyone wants to hear about your routine or the mundane details. That much should be obvious.

It just seems no different from what Facebook is used almost exclusively for: posting about the simplest most mundane shit.

Varying works best for me. I mix it up a little. I'm also trying to strip off a couple pounds after the holidays (weighing anything over 210 regardless of body comp or cardio has my blood pressure high). I also have to hit every body part at least twice a week or I'm ruled by doms.

Everything was different 10 years ago. I could keep eating a surplus, grow every month, blood pressure was fine, no doms, shit was great.

This is not new,
Remember dealing with AIM away messages like "Gym: Chest & Back today", and so on, in the 90's

Yep. My friends post about the movies they see, tv shows they watch, games they play, restaurants they go to, and whatever else.

This is what Facebook is.

Granted. I didn't think that I suggested that fitness talk was a special category, like I agreed with Count Dookkake that I'd sooner hear about people talking about that than their kids, or piercings they want to get, or something.

Why this year? People have been lifting for a long time. Sure beats hearing about crossfit.

You seemed to indicate you only expect things with interesting anecdotes to show up on Facebook. Perhaps you need a different site with that intention.

I never had facebook in mind, I thought we were discussing something more along the lines of a one on one conversation tbh (wasn't that reflected by what you said about being encouraging towards friends, anyways?) Facebook doesn't require any kind of direct participation from a second party, and actually I deleted my facebook account from a lack of interest...

Work out for yourself- not your facebook followers.

A work acquaintance posted a rant like this on Facebook the other day. Naturally, he's exactly one of those douches who posts, and talks, constantly about whatever he's doing at the gym. He's a textbook projector.

I'm going to get a 350/450/550 sticker.

Just to piss you off once you find out what it means.

people confuse their daily endorphin rush for something which makes for interesting conversation. it's a biological thing.

One of my Facebook friends is always talking about what he did at the gym, posting gym-related memes, etc. The only reason I haven't blocked his posts is because he'll occasionally post something legitimately funny.

I'm mirin'

Not your avatar though, fuck the Niners
Ha. Will your world completely shatter when you witness the Niner's 11 players beat your twelve?

Thanks btw!

EDIT: He knows what it is. Yeah, bench/squat/DL. Not sure what the hell C/P/F is. Although my DL is only 525. Didn't work without 550 though! But my bench is 370 and squat is 475 so I didn't feel bad fibbing about the DL number. ;-)

just entering your 20s OP?

exercise as a source of conversation only gets worse as you get older, as people get with their own mortality and attempt to stall it

The 13.1 and 26.2 stickers make me want to die.

I did see a 0.0 sticker the other day, and wanted to become that person's friend immediately.

Haha, this is pretty good. But really, people that post fitness stuff all day, it's self-congratulating as shit. Work out for yourself- not your facebook followers.

What if people get motivated by being able to share their progress. If more people know you are doing something, there is a lesser chance of you failing.

I don't have a problem with people posting their accomplishments or hitting a goal, it's usually a pretty exciting day when you do. The guy I know from the gym that just posts selfies at the gym everyday? No. Blocked him off my feed pretty quick.

I only talk about weightlifting stuff with my friends who also work out. My other friends, only if they bring it up. I workout for myself to be healthy and have fun.

No, I've experienced much worse. It will suck no doubt, but I'll deal
and drink heavily
. I've seen my two favorite college teams go 0-12 and my basketball team get hijacked.

I've noticed as men get older that the percentage of locker room conversations about actual workouts and exercises decreases directly in proportion to the amount of clothing worn in the locker room.

20s - Full gyms clothes with protein in hand talking about nutrition and lifting form
80s - Buck naked with leg on bench talking about what he had for dinner last night

I lift as part of a general strength training regimen for a sport (I do a mix of powerlifting, Olympic lifting, and assistance exercises, as well as cardio and plyometrics).

I don't mind lifting, but at this point in my life (I'm in my 30s), I'd rather be spending the time with my family or doing more outdoor activities or other hobbies.
