Lightning Returns Japan Expo trailer

"Ms. Faron, show me on this doll where the Light touched you."

Sweet lord, it only got worse from there. That was some of the worst VA work I've heard in a while, as it reminded me of Arc Rise Fantasia's hilariously bad voice acting.

The game is looking incredibly rough, the story is a joke, and the battle footage was terrible How could anyone look at Noel's combat footage and consider it acceptable? Two things piqued me interest, though. Lumina is definitely not Serah (that's one hell of a baby voice), and Lightning's humanity disappearing like a fart in the wind is something interesting to explore.

The writing seems worse than XIII-2. Maybe I'm just so sick of these characters that it's impossible for me to like anything that features them. Either way, this game looks dreadful.

Everything that comes out of Lightning's mouth is so fucking cheesy. What's wrong with her? I'm still excited for the game though. The only major turn-off is the recycled enemies.

They already said a vast majority of the monsters are new. They just seem to be showing familiar monsters for these trailers. Also, lets actually hear dialogue from the ame and not conversation taken out of context, shall we?

AN interesting thing i didn't noticed before, is that she actually has a catwalk walking animation. SE is assuming the game being a barbie rpg at this point, with all those pretty dresses.

Lightning started being cheesy in XIII-2. Everything she said sounded like something out of a bad poem. I miss grumpy Lightning from XIII.

You say that like the context won't be just as stupid.

I remember reading awhile back around when Dissidia was released that SE's voice directors really liked to take cues from the Japanese delivery (I think it was Kuja's voice actor who said this). This already includes the pauses in mid-sentence that may go well with Japanese syntax, but not so much with English delivery.

At the very least, look at Yuna's VA. She's capable of doing good jobs (see Rosie in Valkyria Chronicles), but as Yuna, she often has to sound ridiculously stilted on top of just reading a script that would give George Lucas's work in the prequels a run for his money.

Hillis is not that much different in my eyes; her work as Liara wasn't all that bad, but she didn't have to read a completely awful script 100% of the time, plus the frequent pauses in voice direction, etc, etc. In short, it's a little bit of both delivery and the script itself ("THE LIGHT TOUCHED ME.")

Wait she voiced Liara good god no wonder. Her voice work in ME1 was the only thing that stood out to me as being bad (outside of male shep, though I did elect to go through it with female shep), Granted she did improve other the games but that "emotional" exchange with her mother still sticks out to me. Every time I had to go through it again because my last save was on low half and had no medi-gels the horror, I only even realised how to skip through it half way through

No wonder.

Toriyama: "We've spent so much budget on FFXIII, let's reuse all those assets and the crystal tools to milk this 13th FF entry and make it a series.
We can come up with some bullshit story, it'll still sell."

Board: " MOTUMU, GENIUSU DESU"

Toriyama: *laughs*

I really don't think it's an issue with the VAs like with Arc Rise Fantasia... the script is just really awkward sounding and especially so when the lines are copy-pasted one after another. Some of the lines have the "people die when they're killed" vibe to them.

Also, the baby voice doesn't really say much about Lumina not being Serah.... her appearance suggests that she's probably got something to do with Serah for sure IMO.

Maaya as in Maaya Sakamoto o.o?
If that's true... damn...
Yep, that's her.
Both Lightning VAs are probably on the same tier of disappointing performance for me, but Japanese Hope sounds waaaaay better than English Hope.
His voice is just too robotic in a weird way.

After seeing this, people saying that this game has bad graphics are really out of this world.

Perfo, I still don't know what you are talking about. It looks better than all of the screen shots they've given us (shame on Square for failing at such a basic task like taking good screen shots), but it's nothing special. If anything, it looks worse than it probably is because of how barren and bland everything is.

Not really. They're not bad but they're not anything super amazing.

We must've been playing on a different console generation because if that desert area doesn't look better than XIII or XIII-2 to you, I really don't understand what could make an impression on you or people that thinks like you. I've played various games this generation and Lightning Returns is really hitting the right spot with me. Graphics are quite good but the art direction makes it exceptional. I don't have problems saying that this game – to be more specific the area here shown – is better than anything I've seen running on my PS3 during my BETA playthrough of ARR. I think the hate is just stopping some people from admitting certain things.

If the world of Nova Chrysalia can keep this visual quality all along, this will be the ultimate RPG experience for this generation.

WOW is this trailer bad, damn I hate lightning but they still got me to buy XIII and XIII-2 because some trailers looked awesome.

So far nothing pr material that was released for this game gives me a positive attitude towards it. Such a shitty excuse for a FF game.

Perfo, you honest to god sound like a salesperson.

Everytime this is stated the response is the same, we must not be looking at the same game.

From the textures, to the geometry, to the environments, technical stuff (framerate), and the general aesthetic, nothing about this game impresses me. Hell, if I didn't see random cactaurs and other FF staples I would not even take a look at it.

Such BS that they're making Noel an antagonist in this game (or at least, implying it).

They seem to be implying that Noel and Snow are going to be antagonists early on, though I doubt it'll last very long. It does seem a bit odd that they still haven't really introduced the main villain of the game yet, but they're rolling out characters extremely slowly.... at this rate, Sazh will probably be last to be shown and he'll get stuck in Serendipity again or something. :(

Holy shit this story premise sounds so bad, even for FFXIII standards...

That is a lot of hyperbole, man.

Guys Perfo is a character.

Any and all attempts to have genuine human discussion with him are in vain, he's playing a part. Roll with it.

It's just what I think. I also think that part of the Final Fantasy base never really understood what was special about FF to begin with. People just lost sight of what's important in an FF. That Oasis alone screams Final Fantasy all over the place yet people are focusing their attention on the wrong things. This must be the best looking FF in ages and people can't even see it.

Part of the Final Fantasy fanbase is killing the franchise and not the other way around. Depressing.

They couldn't have got a worse voice actor for Lightning, that's for sure. Hillis's weird accent works for someone like Liara, whos an alien, but not for Lightning, who's....a demigod alien thing.

Either way, it looks fun.

Yeah, HD does nothing for it. It just looks awful. FFX HD looks better than this. I truly mean that.

Ugh, this very problematic. LR is laughably bad, in both voice acting and writing. Seems to me like an embarrassment to the FF franchise. The script is just plain lame, as from what we've seen, it lacks shrewdness and thoughtfulness in regards to appealing the FF audience. The XIII mythos is becoming even more outlandish...

FFXIV looks leagues beyond this game in quality (art and assets). Both seem to be using some form of Proto-Luminous, or at least the lighting engine carved out, and while its making for an overall swell package with Realm Reborn, its the only thing of note in Lightning Returns with everything else looking like total ass. The proportions on 'Adonis' are like early college student "my first 3d model" shit.
