• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

Like your crew (Garrus, Wrex, etc) in the first Mass Effect? Well...

So is it confirmed that ME2 will start off of your ME1 save file in regards to what choices you made during your playthrough (who you killed/let die/ending, etc.) or what? And, suppose that you didn't have your save file.. do you think they'd let you select the choices you made in case? It's a rather tricky situation for BioWare, I would think.

I was such a Paragon that I got to save Wrex and still have Ashley too. I sent Kaidan to go die, because Ashley was just so much more interesting than him. So to have them both in ME2 would be pretty great.
:D

Part of the magic of ME2 will be the waiting and searching for those moments where you get to reunite with your old shipmates.

That's actually kinda cool. Wouldn't it be kinda boring/playing it safe if ME2 started with you at the helm of the Normandy, grabbing a cup of coffee, while Ashley's still in the docks with Garrus and Wrex, Tali studying up your engine some more, and Liara still orgasming somewhere in the corner of your bedroom? That would totally feel like ME 1.5.

I think it would be pretty cool if we're already a couple of hours into the game and suddenly Wrex comes stompin' in out of nowhere. Or an Asari lawyer representing Liara because you haven't been paying child support.

No, because the story will no longer be developing with those characters. You'll essentially be starting over with a new crew and a new story arc, meaning it'll barely matter if you played the first game or not. It becomes more of a reset than a continuation.

Totally agree. I spent alot of time in Mass Effect developing these relationships, now they're not even a part of your crew in the sequel, so what was the point of all that? I bet Mass Effect 3 will also feature a different crew.

You say the last part like it's a bad thing...

Now that would be a whole lote more sucky. Does anyone have a source were some ME devvie is saying we were going to be able to play the old crew again somewhere? Or where we all just assuming because of vague statements from BioWare? I'd like to know wether they are now contradicting themselves or we all just assumed the old guys would return as playable teammates.

Applying a GAF-born meme is never a bad thing ;)

Why, it's as though it's being designed for a system which had never seen Mass Effect 1. I'm not too impressed, though I guess they might be planning some sweet way to tie the two titles together in number 3. Then again it is Bioware... A company who's PR is already set on ruining the moments of the title that could leave the player awestruck if they hadn't already been told their failure could result in the crews death.

Clarification on the subject from Chris Priestly:

Chris Priestly said:
Recently Now Gamer posted an article after interviewing Casey at E3.

In this article they say something about Mass effect 1 NPCs not being in Mass Effect. This was incorrect, but a lot of forum readers got very upset over this as they did not know it was not correct. To try to clarify things, ME2 Lead Designer Preston Watamaniuk said:

"To be fair to everyone, none of this is an exact science. We want you to be excited about the game, but revealing some of the information being asked for would simply ruin parts of the game for you. If I went insane and starting telling everyone in detail what happens to Wrex, Tali, Garrus or Ashley etc, then I think the result would be overwhelming anger."

"I love the passion, negative and positive that everyone here brings. When I read the forums I get feedback and even negative feedback, points to passion on a particular subject. That fact in one day a nineteen page post on party members appeared while I was working means we did something right on ME1."

"Part of the magic of ME2 will be the waiting and searching for those moments where you get to reunite with your old shipmates. But while you are searching you will also meet some new comrades who we hope will generate the same amount of passion."

and Writer Patrick Weekes even took things one step further and said:

"We have not forgotten about the squad members from ME1. Whatever role surviving ME1 squad members play in ME2, they will be treated with respect. We want people to look at where those followers are now and say, "Yep, that's what they'd do.""

"- In some cases, it is possible that squad members from ME1 could end up in your ME2 squad. Again, we're trying to approach this with respect for the characters. Nobody is being clumsily shoehorned in or casually written out. All surviving squad members are at least present as NPCs with important story roles."

"- BioWare is not currently giving details about which squad members may possibly join up with Shepard. We hope that part of the joy of ME2 for people who played the first game is seeing what has happened to people you cared about over the last two years, and we don't want to spoil that."

I closed the old thread as people were missing what Preston and Patrick had said and were still being misinformed. Hopefully by reposting things here, people will understand that Mass Effect 1 party NPCs (like Liara, Tali, Garrus, etc) will be in Mass Effect 2.

As Patrick said, we aren't yet revealing the story or more details about them yet. So Stay Tuned for more information in the months to come.

No one ever talks about Kaiden.

Kaiden > Ashley, in my opinion.

Garrus was slightly disappointing, and of course Wrex was badass. Tali was cool, I just didn't user that often

^ Okay, cool we've got that clarified. I stand by my previous post that this is exactly what I was hoping for - old characters showing up not immediately but later in the game - or, alternatively (but the on option doesn't rule out the other - you have to go looking for them, following clues, maybe do sidemissions, something like that.

Yeah, this seems perfect to me. The old crew learned a lot from being apart of Shepard's Normandy and the galaxy is a big place. Capt. Anderson probably has them as leaders on their own big missions now. Crossing paths with them and getting to know the new crew is going to be awesome. At least I know where I can find Joker.

Kaiden's voice is worse, and his personal story is less interesting.
