Likely media picks for GOTY 2014?

Because they're old games? If remastered games counted, then TLOUR would just dominate again just like last year.

Why? I assume if remastered games count a lot of it would come down to the quality of and extent of the remaster. GTA V would demolish TLOUR in that regard, I mean remaster wise TLOUR is pretty ordinary.

Personal GOTY is Sunset Overdrive or Divinity: Original Sin but neither of those are gonna hold much weight in big media.

Hmm... DAI is a strong contender. Sunset Overdrive should be as well, but it seems to be getting less attention in general. Wolfenstein, but that released too long ago.

Well looking at the year now....

I'm guessing Bayo 2, Dark Souls 2, DA:I, maybe far cry 4, smash or mario kart.

Ninty really cleaned house this year.

When is the last time a game with a metacritic in the low 80s has one a GOTY?

Or maybe Smash Bros., even though Brawl was ignored by media GotY awards?

I think you answered your own question with the latter part of that sentence: the Smash Bros. series is absolutely monumental in scope and design, but although they're always positively reviewed, the gaming media seems to take the games for granted in some strange way. I don't predict SSB4 showing up on many yearly lists. If there's a Wii U contender, my feeling is that it's Bayonetta 2 -- that game is a critical darling, and rightly so.

Smash 4 is significantly more monumental in scope then the previous 3 games even considering the time they were released. Plus, the competition this year is pretty weak. There is no excuse for Smash for Wii U to not show up on most GOTY lists. It matches all of the other contenders in quality, and it absolutely smokes them in content.

After this week of streams, I'd put Dragon Age Inquisition and Little Big Planet 3 high up there. Both games have exceeded my expectations.

Far Cry 4
Sunset Overdrive
GTA V
TLOU R
Mario Kart 8
Forza Horizon 2
Bayonetta 2
Titanfall
Shovel Knight
Guacamelee STCE

Those are the top 10 front runners (in my opinion).

Some people seem to have forgotten that Bayonetta 2 is a game that pulled straight 10's and 9.8's out of the most relevant websites in gaming, unlike the 8.5's and low 9's from other acclaimed games out this year.

Anyone not listing Sunset Overdrive as a GOTY contender must have not played Sunset Overdrive, or is in the minority. Easily my GOTY at this point, with Shovel Knight being #2.

Best FPS category should go to Wolfenstein, at least. The game of the year? Well, I'll wait to play DA:I, but it looks far better than the other stuff that's come out this year. If the world was just, a Wii U game would wn this, bit since we are guessing how the media will vote... Lol, good luck.

This is about media picks for GOTY. SO was reviewed well but not great by the media.

82 on Metacritic is pretty good compared to the other new titles this year. It was well-liked by a lot of the media outlets. It could easily be GOTY from the media in a down year such as this because it's so different and is a change of pace. I feel like Far Cry and Dragon Age will be hurt by the fact that, while they are great games, we've seen similar versions of them before. Sunset Overdrive is unique and memorable.

this year is really interesting for GOTY because well.... this year kind of sucked. No great games (havent played DA:I or FC4 yet mind you), remasters are some of the best reviewed games, and a lot of big letdowns (watchdogs, destiny).

I could see Sunset overdrive winning a few awards just based on being something new and fresh.

But lets be honest, the best game of the year was Shadow of Mordor. It will win the majority I think.

yeah, one porn-loving pervert *cough* POLYGON *cough* gave her 7 and i think that guy has retired from life the internet.
she is a real media darling

but sadly, destiny will win everything. we will have destiny 2 in january 2015, destiny 2 remastered in february, and destiny 3 in march, destiny 3 remastered and destiny 4 will come out consecutively in april. oh, and u could pre-order it for a bonus hat.
hollywood will realize that the expendables IS A GENRE. u don't even need story to make money. michael bay made a box-office record breaking "documentary of explosions" (which show u explosions after explosions for straight 2 hours), and got selected as the director for destiny the movie.
my mom is still sleeping with every 12 years old boy in the world, and controllers will eventually fade away. they will get replaced by a nunchuck-like device with one button in it. basically u press that button to play games: u press it and cool things happens. a truly beautiful 2160p at stable 120fps full cinematic experience.
btw EA patented the "pressmium press per pay" feature, so basically u pay everytime u press that button

so, yeah... that's my prediction for GOTY, and the future...

Hell no. The game only did one thing well, the rest of it was mediocre. Pitiful year if that gets GOTY.

Oh, from what I've seen of the game -- of course, I don't have it in my hands yet -- I'm inclined to agree with you. But will the scope of the game be enough to get it past the awards season negligence we've seen directed at the series in the past? I personally, maybe pessimistically, don't think so. Nowadays, these things lean heavily toward that nebulous category of games that we call "AAA" (as much as I begrudge the term), and Smash -- for all its amazing production value -- just doesn't fall in that category.

It'll get great reviews, for sure. But I still think Bayonetta 2's outstanding critical reception will give it the edge at awards season. As will its "mature" inclination, for better or worse.

if GOTY choices were just based on which game got the highest score that year, it would be so much easier to call them, but that's not how it works

also considering the Metacritic difference between Bayo 2, and something like Dragon Age: Inquisition is a whopping two points, that's not even much of a difference to begin with

(there's also something else at play that's going to hurt Bayonetta 2's chances that I don't think has been brought up by anyone else in this thread yet, but I'm not going to write this up in the middle of the night)

By all rights it should be Bayonetta 2.
It has the highest Metacritic average out of all of the actually NEW releases this year, no?
Wouldn't be surprised if it was Dragon Age or Shadow of Mordor though.

If it's TLOU again I'm officially never taking anyone online serious again. EVER.

Some media does work like that though. The highest scoring game is, logically, their best game for the year, so I'm pretty sure you'll see Bayonetta 2 99.9% winning GOTY from GameTrailers and EDGE, at the very least.

Looks to be tied with Shovel Knight and Dark Souls 2.

People are sleeping on Dark Souls. Game reviewed incredibly well and a ton of people played it.

Should be MK8, Bayonetta 2, or TEW.
Will be Destiny or something, and i still can't decide if i'll be pissed or start laughing.

Going by review scores it should be TLoU: R. Well, depending on how GTA 5 does anyway.

I suspect reviewers will avoid giving the award to remasters though to avoid the insufferable rage it would cause.

Mario Kart or Bayo 2 should win GOTY but it's Nintendo so propably Mordor (which I'm dying to play it sounds really good).

But TLOU R was 2014 GOTY

(I can see your and their rationale)

It won't get picked by #IGN or #BluesNews, because of #ethics and #corruption, but Journey (PS4) for the third year in a row is the answer.

It may ordinary as a remaster, but it's still a much better game than GTAV. They're old games, it's ridiculous to include either GTAV, TLOUR or MCC in the list for best game of this year.

It'll be between Dragon Age, Sunset Overdrive, Shadow of Mordor and Bayonetta 2, but I think everyone is still going to be playing Dragon Age still as they are deliberating on this and that may swing the vote in DA's direction. (aka, the Skyrim effect)

It seems crazier to exclude the two highest reviewed games released this year (TLoU & GTA).

i don't think so, mostly because i think despite the name they're considered ports of old games. they're closer in line with okami hd than super mario all-stars (which probably didn't deserve goty mentions in the 90s either).

plus it opens up a fun little can of worms. maybe earthbound for the wii u virtual console could have been considered as game of the year in 2013. maybe rayman legends should be counted for the xbox one and ps4 this year.

really, it should boil down to what was the best game that came out of 2014 as a representative of that year. although if we're looking at 2014 as a whole and want to remember it for being disappointing with so many derivative titles, maybe a remaster topping the list would make sense.
