Lily Bergamo (by Suda51) announced for PS4

Lollipop Chainsaw could have been a much better game if it didn't feel rushed.

Also Is there such a thing a Suda51 Cycle hype?

GhM game is announced--->Everyone who has liked any previous GhM gets excited--->Game is released--->Some fans love it and some hate it, stating they wish they'd go back to making games like X--->GhM game is announced...

My expectation for Japanese PS4 games is kinda high so I'm not sure whether to be excited for this or not. Especially if the trailer shown is a just couple of seconds of no gameplay.

If this and Ishin end up being ps4 exclusives that come west... just wow. Japan could really tip the balance in the Great War for Exclusives.

I don't see them tipping any imaginary balance scale. It would be smart for Sega to at least attempt releasing this Yakuza as soon as possible in the west. If for no other reason then to see if they can capture some of the new audience who may not be aware of other entries / want games to play on what will at that time be a fairly small software selection on a new console. As for Suda's game, it could also benefit from the same scenario and certainly seems much more likely to be localized. Quality of either title obviously not part of this equation since we are taking the average consumer not message board frequenters.

This looks amazing but i'm guessing it's cg.

I highly doubt it. Their engine has been innovative in it's use of some unique color palettes in SoTD, examples:

Killer is Dead also is incredible in some graphical aspects, especially flames, and explosions, remind me of Wind Waker Gamecube :'(

Ye, two or three of these screens are press shots, but believe me, the effect when playing the game live is beautiful in motion, definitely high-contrast. The PS4 is basically the last step to them achieving less jagged edges with a native Full HD resolution, which I simply can't wait for :D

According to Suda, the game is a result of GungHo giving him "complete creative freedom".

Depending on how that can be transcribed in Suda terms (i.e is he speaking of "creative freedom" like in Killer7/No More Heroes or is this another Shadows of the Damned/Lollipop Chainsaw), I wonder how willing overseas publishers will be at bringing the game over to a western audience. Especially after Killer Is Dead's performance.

Then again the game is also said to heavily emphasize online play and possibly smartphone integration so that sort of already sounds like an issue.

Heavily? Not necessarily.

Is the online component versus? Co-op?

KM: Actually, it’s neither. If we were to choose it’s more on the co-op side, but that doesn’t mean it’s completely multiplayer.

Is it closer to Dark Souls or Puzzle & Dragons?

[Suda snickers]

KM: Yeah, it’s very similar, but different from Puzzle & Dragons.

GS: It’s new and unique, something you haven’t seen before with a different style of friends system.

KM: From a creators standpoint and player’s standpoint, if you’ve done it before it’s kind of boring to redo something you’ve already done.

Another Yakuza game which is sure to do no more than 50,000 units and another sure-fire Suda51 bomb is going to tip the balance in the Great War for Exclusives? I'm not so sure ;)

I mean it's nice they're coming and maybe they'll be great games, but it does not seem like they do much to tip any scales.

It's good to be realists, but I think you guys both might be missing or underplaying that we're still in the early adopter phase of this console cycle. When I said the Great War for Exclusives I was talking about exactly the pissing contest which happens every day for the next couple years here on Neogaf (and elsewhere). And while obviously places like neogaf have a rather indirect connection to demand in the mass market, the big players obviously care enough about the dialog here to get involved with the discussion, from people like Shu Yoshida responding to things posted, to Penello basically making gaf a part of his daily routine, to even Major Nelson signing up, to the astroturfing which I've *heard* happens..

If Japanese games by cult-famous developers weren't a part of the battle plans, Microsoft wouldn't be paying for Swery's next game, would they? And they believe stuff like this is important, I would think, because the early adopters are still casting their votes. Which also neatly explains why no one cares about exclusives like this after the dust is a bit more settled. I could be totally wrong, though.

Also, as you pointed out la1n, beginning of the gen is the best time to attract a new audience. So it seems a bit early to discount every game by every Japanese developer with a small but loyal following in the west these days -- that's getting to be something that describes the majority of Japanese game developers, after all. I remember when I was playing the Korean version of Demon's Souls and the game was widely considered a bomb :)

Anyway, just some thoughts.

It looks amazing, no more blocky lines cel-shading (if that is real-time). It would be glorious if next gen Naruto games have this level of graphic quality.

You mean, their artists. Both Shadows of the Damned and Killer is Dead (along with Lollipop Chainsaw) run on Unreal Engine 3. Lily Bergamo will either too run on UE3, or will make use of Grasshopper's licensing of Unreal Engine 4.

Grasshopper does have some of the more inventive assert artists and designers around though.

Must be UE4, from the interview in the OP:

Unreal 3 or Unreal 4?
KM: [Laughs] It’s one of those two! If we told you, you would know about the platforms.

I hope Suda will introduce in the storyline Lily's sister, Kanta Atalanta and the black-skinned enemy boss Balotella Brescia.
That would be awesome

With the money GungHo is making from Puzzles and Dragons, I'm sure they can throw a couple million to Suda whenever they want.

Sorry, I meant to say their modification of the Unreal Engine :) and agreed ;)

Man, Grasshopper keeps pumping out titles year after year:

2008: No More Heroes
2010: No More Heroes 2
2011: Shadows of the Damned
2012: Lollipop Chainsaw
2013: Killer is Dead
2014: Lily Bergamo

That's quite of roll. And I believe none of them have done really well since No More Heroes on Wii.

IMO all those games are quite mediocre, including no more heroes (released in 360 and Ps3 would be just another game of the bunch).
Grasshoper games interesting in the looks department but the game are quite repetitive and kind of boring. :/

Good food, good position, cool distinction between the high and low town.
And people there speak with a hilarious dialect. :D

X more often is Killer7.

Atalanta is the name of the football team of the city of Bergamo.
Balotelli is a famous football player from Brescia (a city near Bergamo).

did they mention exclusivity? I don't recall that, but translation was spotty

Thats what I wanna know, it was at a Sony event so of course they will only talk about the PS4 version, we have seen in the past games announced at platform events end up being multiplat.

I would love for Suda 51 to make a game on Nintendo consoles again, I doubt this game will be pushing PS4 hardware.

I guess at TGS we will find out if there is a WiiU version, I doubt it will be an Xbox one version.

Just saw this on youtube and of course gaf doesn't disappoint. I am very intrigue to see what this game is about. The trailer got me hyped.

Those graphics... I think we can pretty much say that next-gen celshaded games will be indistinguishable from actual drawings, if done right. The horsepower certainly seems to be there!

Happy to hear things are looking up for an English localization, especially after concern that XSEED might not want to get involved with Suda projects after Killer Is Dead bombed. This might be the game that pushes me to get a PS4.

Well, the above article mentions that Gung Ho registered Lily in the US. I'm guessing that Xseed was referring to Natural Doctrine.
GungHo Online Entertainment is more of a developer than publisher in the west. They acquired Grasshopper Manufacture in January which is probably why the trademark comes from them.
Coincidentally, a lot of GungHo's games have been handled by Xseed in the past when it comes to localization.

LMAO are you serios?
Those consoles wont do shit in the west.

Not that Sony needs any help from those games aka exclusives
