Obviously you can state a thing like "this shit sounds like crap and is hurtful to my sensibilities", but claiming that certain music or art or whatever is objectively bad can never hold up since there clearly are people who think it's good. That's all I'm saying.

well, let's compromise. i think you're absolutely right in saying there will always be some subjectivity when judging artistic genres. this is like saying, "i prefer hip hop to rock greatly, so (to me) nas - illmatic is subjectively a better album than radiohead - the bends"

having said that, some technical components of art can be judged objectively when doing so apples vs. apples. this is like saying, "radiohead - the bends is objectively a better rock album than disturbed - sickness." i think that's spot on and anyone who says otherwise isn't necessarily dumb or stupid... just wrong. and misguided. and a little stupid, i guess.

Can't say I'm a big fan of this song or the potential new direction for the band. I bailed on them after hearing 'Minutes to Midnight' anyway.

It's a better rock album since I doubt the latter (Disturbed, then) would even be classified as that. Either way, you'd never get a fan of Disturbed or similar music to agree on that, unless they also appreciate the stranger type of rock that Radiohead transmits.

But here's where we can compromise, I think: If anything you could argue that Radiohead are objectively better musicians, technically speaking (though that doesn't equal better music or art per se), and have had a larger impact on music in general than Disturbed (and a whole lot of other bands). The Smiths, while certainely not to everyones liking, has had an enormous amount of influence on bands that came later, for instance. Even if you don't like them that's something that should be recognized.

They used to be a little bit of a guilty pleasure band.
Like I'd maybe play them while I was playing certain computer games, or maybe while I was working out.
I mean, I knew they were fucking awful, and I would be pretty embarrassed if anyone actually caught me listening to them, but they served a purpose.

This new stuff is just beyond awful and doesn't sound like it can even be used to work out to lol.

One of my favourite tracks is probably the Krwling track on Reanimation lol

I can’t believe I’m posting about Linkin Park, I kind of feel dirty for doing so…

This is pretty much how I feel about Disturbed -- I listen to them when I'm running, playing a game in a boss battle (or grinding), or when I need a quick wake-up. I really like the music but lord they have some awful lyrics, and that new single "Another Way to Die (Not Quantum of Solace version)" sucks. /OT

On-topic: I do not like this "Catalyst" song at all, which somehow manages to be worse than the Transformers 2 song. I'm not the biggest fan to begin with so whatever.

Lame as all get out.

Which is a shame since they had potential at one point in their music careers but... in the end... it doesn't really matter.

Wait, you're actually serious?

I'm glad we all have you here to tell us what we should and shouldn't listen to. :lol

That is, if we want to do it "right". :lol

i like shitty things, too. i just don't delude myself into thinking they're good.

i bet all these people here who wouldn't dare think things can be judged objectively read video game reviews.

if u guyz had to rate what wut it be liek:

1) Nickleback

2) Creed

3) Linkin Park

4) Disturbed

5) Fall Out Boy

If I really had to rank them..

1) Linkin Park (that 'Pushing Me Away' song is still a guilty pleasure of mine, and 'Shadow of the Day' is surprisingly decent)
2) Fall Out Boy (if only for the glorious ham of 'WHEN I WAS A YOUNG BOY' etc.)

The rest = shit

You think video game reviews are objective?

Isn't that My Chemical Romance? Also, how do I know that? WTF is wrong with me?

i don't read video game reviews but my point was to replace music with video games and it would be easier to see the point i was trying to make. ie, replace radiohead with TF2 and disturbed with daikatana.

linkin park is the superman 64 of music but on the whole, people here seem to have a more discerning gamer-eye than they do music-ear. which is understandable considering the nature of the board.

Asserting that you do not like Linkin Park does not make your opinion an objective fact.

The problem with replacing music with video games is that you can't compare them. A song can't be "broken" in the sense that a game can, I think. You could say that some components of what makes up a game are comparable -- the aesthetics of the music or artwork and such. But under that it's all cogs and machinery and if they don't work they simply don't. A album can suffer from lacking production values yet still be great. A game can have great visuals but still be virtually unplayable.

But I'll play along and just say that going by demographics Linkin Park is probably more like MGS4, Gears of War, Halo 3 or Medal of Honor. I can see no basis as to why Linkin Park would be an equivalent to Superman 64; they're popular, have great production values and sell a lot.

1. Since when have you used that avatar? I've used it since April 1st, 2010.
2. Scott Pilgrim and LP have nothing in common but I like them both so fuck off.

Anyway, Mike stopped by in the U Stream chat today and covered a number of topics relating to ATS. He firstly confirmed that all three versions will be differently packaged, meaning the standard CD, Special Edition & Deluxe Box Set will have their own art books and cases. He talked about how we can expect gang vocals from the band, which incorporates other members from the band harmonizing. He also discussed the difference in Chester's screams, describing some of them as "exciting", whilst confirming the hard songs on the album. He also gives a brief insight into his thoughts on the genre of The Catalyst, along with numerous other subjects ranging from the upcoming tour to the song order of A Thousand Suns.

Other stuff covered:

* Chester is doing a very different kind of screaming that is very exciting. Mike referred to it as "weird" and "losing his mind kind of screaming."
* There will be heavy tracks on the album.
* Mike and Chester do back and forth vocals on almost every song.
* Mike will be rapping.
* The music video for The Catalyst is not yet finished.
* Both new and old songs will be played on tour.
* "That effect on the voices in The Catalyst is a layer of a flanger, a modulation effect, and some other stuff."
* "We had fun with effects on this record...lots of "ear candy"...on many instruments."
* "It's not really a concept record. It's kind of a concept record, but only in the sense that the concept is more about the execution of it. It is not a rock opera. You guys may feel like it's got a common thread that kinda goes through from song to song and all the way down the album and that is definitely intentional. There's multiple layers and meaning."
* Neal Avron has mixed the record. He mixed Minutes to Midnight as well.
* LP will not be on the soundtracks to Saw 7 or Transformers 3.

Fuck, you're right. Well, make Linkin Park #1 then, and lump Fall Out Boy in the shitbin with the others

I like Linkin Park, I don't see why that is such a bad thing.

But I like a lot of things I 'probably shouldn't' lol.

When it comes to music I have no pre-decided stuff about bands or genres, just if I hear something I like, thats catchy, I'm down. My music playlist is the most random assortment of stuff ever. :lol

*shrugs*

Can't listen to the new one atm as I have no speakers lol, but I'll give it a listen when I get home.

I'm the true fan of Linkin Park style.
I listen to Linkin Park since 2003 year.
Linkin Park is in my blood, in my heart.

Linkin Park - a great band, which sets the tone of modern music. They do not put yourself in the framework of genres, they just do what they get from them better than others ... write music. Their work is a book open where everyone can find in it a part of yourself, their music brings together millions of people around the world. We, the fans of Linkin Park, are proud to live in a time of glory and triumph led!

You'll find Qwerty's studio and live performance from Japan (BETTER than the studio version imo) on Linkin Park Underground v6.0. LPU6 is probably the best LPU out there, right after Hybrid Theory EP.

You can also find the studio version on Songs From The Underground.

You also can not buy any of these albums new anymore.

Gotta say I'm shocked at the amount of Linkin Park defense force nuttery in this thread. I can sort of understand Lady Gaga DF, I get Britney DF, I see where Pedo DF is coming from...but Linkin Park DF goes too far even for me

I was driving the other day and papercut was randomly selected on my MP3 player. That shit still rocks to this day.

Edit : just listened to this new song. Not a fan. I still wished they made something with A06.

That is my lastfm page.

whew... much more reasonable

but from the looks of it, you'd love the smiths. i'd say give "queen is dead" and "hatful of hollow" a spin when you have time

Personally, I like Strangeways, Here We Come the best. But I seem to be in the minority on that one haha.

there are some bands in his list that you could argue against intelligently but his list contains radiohead, bob dylan, the smiths, wu-tang clan, sonic youth, queen, Sigur Rós, outkast, feist, etc. you're either trolling or you haven't looked at his list.

also bonus points for listening to the "service bell" collabo 35 times. beautiful song.

yea i missed them on the list first time around... some good stuff on here

Nah, i am just curious as to what he believes is not shitty music. If my music is shit, then he is either a radio rock fan or a metal fan.

spunibard said:

i never said "right" or "wrong" just "good" and "bad"

it's ok to listen to whatever you want but when i listen to rick ross i know he's not "good"

andif you're gonna use loaded phrases, i'll do the same: i'd say it's not "stooping to a narrow idea" so much as it is "transcending to a broader perspective". maybe once you've expanded your musical knowledge, you'll see how terrible some of this stuff is

Spider from Mars said:

not true - i like BTBAM and other, more traditional, metal bands and can realize radiohead, bob dylan, the smiths, wu-tang clan, sonic youth, queen, Sigur Rós, outkast, feist, etc. are good
