Link's Awakening being remade using OoT assets (fan game)

He plans on adding NEW dungeons? And altering the story (to make it darker...)

There's no way this is going to takeoff, Nintendo ninjas or not

Looks alright, I guess. Kind of turned off by the promise of a "deeper, darker, original, dynamic and more inspired storyline", whatever that means.

Companies have a legal obligation (copyrights / Trademarks, can't remember which of the two specifically) to shut these down to protect their IP.

The Urban Legend of IPs

Ah yes, remember when Sega lost the rights to sonic?

Boy I bet they had egg on their face.

(No, but seriously, why do people keep saying this?)

+1

Honestly their graphical inspiration could be the MSX for all I care, just fix the "having to equip the power bracelet every time you want to lift a rock" thing

A "deeper, darker, more original" storyline, nope, thank you, but I'm good. Link's Awakening doesn't need a grittier story, it already hit the sweetspot in its original release.

Haven't we learned anything from AM2R

DON'T PUBLICIZE YOUR NINTENDO FAN REMAKE UNTIL IT IS DONE DONE DONE

But AM2R was a public project for nearly a decade and didn't get shut down until it fully released. And even then it would have probably been fine if not for the fact it got a shit load of attention because it was better than anything Nintendo has done with the series in years. And the sites covering weren't afraid to say so, which was not appreciated by Nintendo.

That said, it did seem to act as the spark that turned Nintendo into assholes about fan projects. They were fine with that kind of stuff prior AM2R's shutdown unless the projects competed with their own or sought profit/donations.

And this particular project doesn't look all that great.

Why would you intentionally downgrade a game?

I remember for years and years OOT was the highest rated game ever on the internet, and man I thought that game was bad.

Nonsensical to make this. Though I admire the dedication required. Ultimately, 3d Zelda has never managed to capture the mechanical fluidity of the 2d Zeldas, and Link's Awakening is one of the most 2d zelda ass zelda games.

Fans have a hard time completing Zelda remakes in 2D, let alone in 3D. There have been some completed OoT hacks, but most of them are short and/or use the original game assets. I wish these guys the best of luck, hoping they realize this is at least a 2- to 3-year full-time endeavor.

Can they actually do anything before something is released or force someone to stop development?

Also this is a rom patch. Can Nintendo legally remove rom patches?

Yes, they can do both.

The question with this sort of thing is never "Can they?", but "Will they?"

Link's Awakening is too good for OOT's butt ugly art style. Use the Wind Waker aesthetic and then we'll talk.

This reminds me of how Nintendo should totally remake LA Ă  la ALBW. More buttons for more equips and faster text would actually remove the biggest flaws right there and then.

I dunno, but square did a C & D on chrono trigger crimson echoes, which sounds like it was totally legal since it was gonna be offered as a patch.

Isn't that one of the ones that probably wasn't actually a C&D? IIRC several of the SE related projects were not shut down, the creators just used the excuse of a C&D to stop working on them.

Browsing and misread the title, thought Link's Awakening was getting remade with OoT 3D assets...

This... Link's model is nice, but other then that, eh.

No it was legit; SE threatened them via their legal department. However, one of the game's directors, Zeality, was banned from Ocremix.org years ago over unrelated topics and so he sometimes tends to attract haters whenever he or his website are mentioned. These haters went out of their way to try to contact SE to ask if the shutdown was real, but obviously SE didn't respond to these random people.

The game was also 98% complete and a full playthrough is on YouTube.

Well that looked like poop on a stick.
And I mean it actually looks worse than most n64 games let alone OoT.
So many bad decisions already.
Why make the inside of the houses with 3D models when they look so shite, OoT used prerendered background for a reason in some cases.
Why clearly try to make chuchus from scratch when you could probably retrofit the working chuchus from MM for a much much better result?
It's not like I don't want to buy this or something similar, I don't even to play it or even watch someone play it since it looked so awful.

It's evident they could have gone closer to what was in LA

but still

Wow... looks like a decent fan effort, but clearly rough looking. Poor use of colors especially. The art style is very clashy.

*Reads some of the thread*

Ah, the people who are shouting "They need to shut the game to protect their IP!" are in full force. Nice to hear ;).

To be serious, I also find it to be a mistake to even bother making Nintendo fan projects after how painfully clear it is that Nintendo loath's and hates fan productions if AM2R and Pokemon Uranium mean anything.

Will give this a look once the project (if it does) releases.

I wonder what happed to this LA project?

Last I heard the maps were made (2009) but nothing was ever done with them?

Edit: I just remembered there's a GMod map of Mabe village out there too...

That looks sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much better already it's not even funny.

just play DX, it looks better than ALttP already

LTTP is pretty ugly looking imo. I like the art style of LA way more.

Wtf am I reading?

I mean Link's Awakening is a great game, and great looking for a game boy game, and yes, I understand the art style for LttP isn't the best in the series. But to say it's ugly compared to LA and that there have wouldn't look great on the LttP engine is just bonkers to me.

Yep, this 100%. It'll never be finished because Nintendo will get it shut down. Especially with their new thing where they have fans reporting on fan games like this.

Couldn't even be bothered to use 3DS remake assets?
Looks like some terrible texture pack for an emulator.
Announced before it's completed?

What was the point of this really? Could have spent their time making a new game from scratch at least then if it's good you could profit from it.

A 3D link awakening is the zelda remake I want the most but this doesn't look up to standards that recent fan games have achieved. Don't see this surviving now once Nintendo becomes aware.

It looks really, really bad. But I'm not really the audience for this anyway. I prefer LA in its original 2D state. Not a big 3D Zelda fan.
