Lionhead Celebrates Their 10th Anniversary and Releases New Episode in the Studio's Video Series

Take a Fun-Filled Behind the Scenes Tour of the "Fable 2" Combat System and Meet the Team that has been Creating Games for Over a Decade

Get up close and personal with team at Lionhead, currently celebrating the studio's 10th Anniversary and working on "Fable 2" for Xbox 360, the highly-anticipated follow up to the best-selling, Xbox exclusive "Fable". Episode Two highlights the innovative one-button combat system that gamers will experience in the sequel.

Slated for a 2008 release, "Fable 2" represents the studio's 10-year dedication to creating some of the best and most beloved video games in the industry.

"This is a very exciting time for us," said Peter Molyneux, managing director of Lionhead Studios. "Ten years in this industry is no small feat. We have a great team that is committed to pushing the limits of what we can do with today's technology; ten years and counting."

With the release of Episode Two, listen to Molyneux and the rest of the Lionhead team tell comical anecdotes about their "real-life" combat encounters and meet an eclectic "sword" master whom the studio hired to demonstrate how "real sword fighting is done." Strangely enough, several members of the Lionhead team own life-size metal weapons, which allowed for daily parking lot meetings and additional comedic relief. To round out their focus on combat, fellow UK developer's Lionhead and Rare played an intense, yet good-natured game of football (soccer), where there was no shortage of fun and/or combat.

With more episodes to come, look for continued behind the scenes tours of "Fable 2." Get a sneak peek inside the game, as well as get to know the people behind the action. Being a hero or heroine, fighting, questing and adventuring are central to the "Fable" experience. With the upcoming release of "Fable 2," gamers will be one step closer to fulfilling their dreams of being good or evil; getting married or remaining single; and finding out what it means to experience unconditional love in the world of "Fable.!"

Every choice continually defines who the character becomes in "Fable 2," allowing players to truly live the life they choose.

Interesting though I was hoping for a bit more info about the combat rather than the usual message "it will be great".

I still need to go back and continue playing Fable1, this diary reminded me about it.

The main point of the video was to show what kind of research went into the combat, and how it will look and feel. Not so much the combat itself, we've had E3 for that!

Oh and look carefully at each and every shot, some of them have something 'new' in there for you to discover! ;)

The combat thing reminded me of the halo video about how they came about planning the range of ways enemies react. Intrigued to see how they pull off the one button thing aswell.

I think this is a big joke.

All combat on one button.. "we just put every move we can think of onto this one button"..

Lionhead has you for a bunch of fools.

I want to know more about this one button as well. of course sensativity of the press factors but what about directional? yes it does for multiple enimies but if fighting one will it do all different attacks. the e3 stuff was pretty much the same combo over and over again.

As soon as he said "one button combat" my initial reaction was "ugh, why." Hopefully Lionhead pulls it off, otherwise it could really break the game if the combat is uninteresting and repetitive.

yeah I've seen some of the E3 shaky-cam videos for that though even those are a bit 'lofty' in terms of what is actually possible.
I think the one button for everything could work decently if done well (timing, button press-hold and movement modifiers) but I sort of think that by trying to make the game more casual oriented ("you only have to press one button to attack") the devs may be over-complicating combat where only a very select few people are going to fully master the game or a lot of the more interesting combat events are ignored due to the effort not worth the payoff.
eg: button mashing A while not very exciting is still more effective than press and hold A, wait for swing, A, A riposte, hold A, parry, A stab.

I anxiously await a more in-depth video that shows that learning the deeper aspects of 'single button' combat is worth the time invested.

The only thing they're putting on the one button that normally isn't is blocking. Aside from that, Fable 1 was just "one button combat", along with just about every other ARPG I can think of.

I cant wait to play and see how the combat system works in the game.

I had a tonne of fun with Fable and hope LionHead can really innovate & offer us some really fresh enjoyable gameplay in the game.

The physics in the early combat demo reminded me of those in Crackdown.

I've really enjoyed the Lionhead VDs so far. I'm eager for the next.

There's videos around here somewhere of him demoing it. Seems to work pretty well.

Wow, Lionhead has been around 10 years now?

It seems like only yesterday that he filled our heads with bullshit about Black and White.

I bought Black and White... kind of regret it.

That combat doesn't really do much for me either, unfortunately.

I got it, I was just too frightened to type.

I'm posting it every time Peter is mentioned now. The heaven's gate leader was Peter, from the future!

I tried out the combat at E3 and of course the game in general needs a lot of polish, but it actually seemed to work pretty well.

When Peter talked about it, I couldn't help but feel that it just would become a button-masher no matter what, but when I got it in my hands, I have to admit, I became very focused on doing the right things at the right times. Take into consideration I couldn't even use magic or ranged weapons, nor could I see how much score/XP I got...

But the way you control the music and how your fighting style is controlled by the timing of the button presses works pretty good I have to admit.

looking forward to checkin out the new episode, are these coming out every other month?

It depends but normally there's between 6-8 weeks in between each episode! :)

great episode! Fable's 2 art is SHIT-HOT, I didn't expect it to be that good.

hopefully Lionhead can pull off the "one button combat" right so it isn't just a button mash-fest.
