Updated top 10:

10. Street Fighter 4
9. Bioshock 2
8. inFamous
7. Halo 3: ODST
6. Fifa 10
5. Uncharted 2
4. Killzone 2
3. Rock Band: Beatles
2. The Sims 3
1. Modern Warfare 2

Great games this year which didnt make the list: Red Faction: Guerrilla (set on Mars, destroy buildings with a sledgehammer = win), Starcraft 2 (If released in 2009, PC gamers can bid farewell to their social lives.), PES (Good, but has lost its former glory), Guitar Hero (Rock Band has Beatles. Period.), Prototype (insane fun, enemy consuming and shape shifting powers are awesome), MAG (256 player online, never been done before on consoles, Zipper has good track record,) Resident Evil 5 (Not Survival Horror, but great as an Action-Adventure game), Heavy Rain (Massive undertaking, 2000 page script, main character can die but game goes on, tackles mature themes), Mafia 2 (The first was excellent, this seems to be improving upon it, expect more details to come in at E3), and grand daddy of them all, Final Fantasy 13 (Should be out in Japan by year end, impatient gamers feel free to import)

Games which might 'Surprise': Microsoft will probably reveal full lineup at E3, will have Triple -A games aplenty, keep a close watch on that, Starcraft 2 (If it releases, PC gamers can bid their social lives goodbye.), Assassins Creed 2 (New setting looks intriguing, original game had a lot of promise, hopefully it will be realized this time), Mass Effect 2 (Sequel to one of the best RPG's this gen, rich game environment can be tapped for more), Diablo 3 (unlikely, but if it releases in 2009, PC gamers will be ecstatic, Blizzard has good track record, and Diablo series is brilliant,) and finally God of War 3 (we'll know release date by E3, if it releases in 2009, this bad boy goes straight to the top of the list, destroying all competition along the way.)

Thats how it looks as of now. Feel free to critique. Original list left untouched below to continue acting as a hate magnet. :lol

Hey guys,

I'm writing an article on the top 10 games of 2009 for a magazine. I just wanted some suggestions/recommendations... I am worried I might have left something out. Here's the list:

10. MAG
9. Mafia 2
8. Street Fighter 4
7. Bioshock 2
6. Heavy Rain
5. inFamous
4. Resident Evil 5
3. Killzone 2
2. Uncharted 2
1. Modern Warfare 2

I thought about putting in Halo: ODST, but I dont see much excitement over it tbh. Also, has a release date or window been announced for it? I'm still thinking of putting it in somewhere, just because even though I dont care much for it, i'd like this list to have at least some objectivity, and Halo is gonna be huge come what may, but I dont know which game to remove. Also... any Xbox 360 exclusive games i'm missing? I thought of Mass Effect 2, but wiki says its between January and March of 2010 (also, might be coming to PS3??).

I will be including a caveat in the article, saying that we will know a lot more about the upcoming games at E3, so this list might change. But for now... what do you guys recommend?

EDIT: Added Halo 3: ODST, took out MAG, reshuffled the list a bit.

EDIT 2: The Sims 3 is going on for sure... something will come out. Probably Mafia 2.

Yeah, before anyone says no Wii games... Wii hasnt been released legally in the country where the magazine is published. :lol
 
So, how's MW2? Havent played it myself yet so I can't say if it's good or not. I've only seen a teaser of it which didn't tell me much.
 
Unless Halo 3: ODST is Marketplace exclusive - I can't possibly see it not breaking over a million copies sold in stores.

It's Halo - that's all you need to know.
 
Some of those aren't even out yet. Is this a best games of the year, or top 10 games you should play before the year is out? Are these the top 10 most hyped games? I just don't get the focus.

Also, what country?

I guess I should have made it clearer... its games which are out and you should get, or games which gamers are most looking forward to in the year 2009. Sorry. :lol

So... gamers should get RE5, KZ2 and SF4, and keep a look out for the rest of the games on the list.

Also, it will be published in India.

Anyway, put Red Faction: Guerilla up in there. Are people really looking forward to Heavy Rain?
 
I think the jury is still out on MAG and Heavy Rain. Everything else is solid. I'd imagine Assasain's Creed should replace one of those.

I don't really get what Heavy Rain is tbh.

Everything I have read about AC2 says its release date is somewhere around/before March 2010. Otherwise I would definitely have put it in there... I'm one of the few people on GAF who liked Assassins Creed.

I specifically stated in the OP that I wanted more Xbox 360 exclusive games, as my knowledge about them was less than ideal. Would you care to help a little? :D
 
You shouldn't have put the Wii part in spoiler, people will flame you.

Heavy Rain is one of my top games this year, but I seriously doubt about its sales potential or how big is going to be. Not really sure if its going to work even (if it does is going to be glorious, I'm really wishing for it).

Halo:ODST is much more safer option than MAG or Heavy Rain, it´s Halo, it´s going to sell a lot. You shouldn't have any doubt about it. And you completely forgot the biggest title this year in sales potential: The Sims 3, that is going to sell more than any game of that list.

Then, if Assasin's Creed 2 is going to be released this year, it could sell a lot too, but not sure.

Actually it's my most anticipated game of the year by far. Liked both Omikron and Fahrenheit, now let's see what Quantic Dream can do with the full support of a publisher like Sony.
 
I don't know what the deal is with Alan Wake, but that is the most intriguing 360 exclusive to me. Also I guess Lost Planet 2 or Mass Effect 2. Won't those likely be out by the end of the year?

In all seriousness what if Gran Turismo 5 or Final Fantasy XIII comes out this year? :lol yes seems unlikely, but you would end up leaving 2 of the biggest games out of your list so you should at least mention them IMO. Something like "if GT5 or FFXIII comes out in 2009 then they make the list and the bottom 2 drop out" or something like that.

Sigh. Nope. I would love to put in some Xbox 360 exclusive games, and would love it if you would recommend some to me.

Also, this list isnt really for handhelds. Console and PC games only.
 
Halo 3: ODST, hello.

And honestly, this whole idea sounds dumb. I'm pretty confident that we don't even know HALF of the exclusive titles coming for all three platforms this year that are AAA games.

But it's very much a niche game and honestly, whatever the game turns out to be (I expect to be disappointed by it btw) I don't think it belongs on such a list which is clearly marketed towards mainstream gamers.

Perhaps NFS:Shift has a place in the list? I couldn't care less about the game, but it promises to be a return to form for NFS from what I understand (then again, so was Undercover) and they still sell like hotcakes.

/fake edit: and Alan Wake. Not sure if it's gonna be a hit, but it sure has potential. One of my more anticipated games for sure.

They will be out next year. ME2 according to wiki, and Lost Planet 2 according to a 1up article with a quote from some capcom exec.

Also, as of now nothing is known about Alan Wake. Most probably next year. I will be including a short paragraph at the end, about 'surprises'... games which COULD happen this year... for example, FF13 will release in Japan for sure, GT5 might... God of War 3... Diablo 3... Alan Wake... etc.

Nothing is known about Diablo 3's release date, so it will go with the 'surprise' games as well.

Thats true... I put it on the list more because of how massive an undertaking it is... 2000 page script, 30,000 unique animations etc... my thinking was that people should be more aware of these games coming out, and i'd put Heavy Rain in there.

I will be including the caveat that we will know much more at E3, and thats when many more games are expected to be unveiled etc etc. This list is an 'as of now' list. And yeah, I added Halo 3: ODST to the list.

Please consider removing some or even all of the sequels from that list. Or better yet, don't write a top 10 list at all (unless you've been forced to, god help you).

edit: actually I retract what I say, it's mean. Your list is fine.

Put prototype in there. I'd remove MAG because it seems much more of an unknown quantity.
 
I doubt MAG will come out this year.

And i doubt MW2 will be good for anyone but the people who spend all of their gaming time on COD4 already.
 
Well, some of those games will make it this year. If they don't it seems like it would be kind of an underwhelming holiday. There is just no way Microsoft doesn't have some good exclusives coming this year.

No Wii Sports Resort? Probably one of the biggest games of 2009. No matter if you want it or even care for it, you have gotta recognize it.

The list is mostly for PS3, 360 and PC only... Hardware that is legally available. Also, no handhelds. Otherwise of course Wii would have a couple games on there. I'd love to put Mad World in there as well.

Its similar to Heavy Rain... its ambitious... even if it crashes and burns, you still have to look out for it... I dunno if its a good analogy or not, but if I compare it to movies, think of these games as tentpole releases... Stuff which might be hit or miss, but its ambitious and does new things, so you still gotta check it out.

Are you professional or what ? You rule out Mad World and Wii Sports Resort ? You rule out the remaining motion + games ? You rule out The Agency ? No mention of The Conduit whatsoever ?

It is, but they've built it from the ground for the consoles and changed the combat system (and maybe some other stuff too, I can't remember the details).

Oh, did not see that it was the HD twins. Strange, does the PS3 really have a following in India? I know XBOX does as they've heavily paid to position their brand in pop culture. The Wii shows up in movies from time to time as well but I've never seen PS3 in anything like that.

No, I am not a professional.

Yes, I ruled out Mad World and Wii Sports Resort. I ruled out the remaining motion + games. I didnt mention The Conduit. Its because I hate the Wii. Or, I dunno, it could be because the Wii isnt legally available in the country where the magazine will be published, like I said previously.

The Agency isnt coming out in 2009.

I made this thread so you could tell me more about the power of the 360. Please go ahead and educate me, I dont bite. As I edited in the OP, I already put in Halo 3: ODST. I'd put in more... if you would recommend games instead of stirring up system wars.

Oh, and God of War 3 as of now doesnt have a release window. It will be put in a paragraph with other games which might be 'surprise' 2009 releases.
