Little game's moments that you remember

Getting a dreamcast and downloading stuff off the internet that showed up IN MY GAME. Fucking amazing, felt like I was connected to the world or something.

First game I remember seeing was Atari Baseball:

Awesome memory: getting this game:

On the Amiga version of Toki, when you come out of the rain on stage 5 your fur drips for a while.

Boogie Wings has a ton. The whole game is made up of silly little details.

Metal Slug series ihas a ton. Hard to single out any one thing as there are a lot, but just the gradual degradation as you shoot up a banner is impressive.

Violent Storm. There are sections where piglets follow you around. Pick one up and they turn into a football you can throw. The football bouncing physics are remarkably well done.

Kirby's Dreamland 3 is great for this stuff. Touch a dandelion and the fluff blows away. All the characters and abilities are very lovingly drawn and animated.

Seeing your Lakitu camerman in the mirror in Mario 64 was a great touch.

Lots of weird small ones:

-Getting Donkey Kong Country 3 for Christmas. I'd wanted it for so long, and remember seeing the commercials with the apes on the motorcycles or whatever. Then I got it that year for Christmas. I was sitting on the wooden part of the floor right in front of my grandparent's door, and then I unwrapped it and was super excited. Can't remember much else.

-Watching my brother play Chrono Trigger once really early in the morning. I came out into the front room and saw him playing and he was like "Don't tell Mom and Dad."

-"Borrowing" my brother's gameboy and going out to the living room and playing Metroid II or Cosmo Tank on the couch with a lamp light.

-The part in Breath of Fire II where you go inside the Queen's body (not like that). I also remember playing it on emulator on my dad's computer one Christmas eve when everyone else was asleep and I couldn't sleep.

-The Christmas I got a PS2 and the one I got a PS3 (last year) were somewhat similar in that they were both really unexpected. The PS2 we thought we weren't getting until several months later, but then there it was in that electric blue box on Christmas. It was the first actual console I'd had since the SNES had died when I was in second grade or so. The PS3 came from my sister, which was something else unexpected. She said she was thinking about getting a console for herself before she deployed, but then out of nowhere she got us a PS3 with Uncharted 1, 2, LBP, and FF13.

-The end of Mother 3 :(

Super Mario World: Unlocking and beating the Special World.

I was much younger at the time. It must have been several months before I even discovered it on my own accord. And those levels were fucking hard (Tubular and Outrageous stand out). They challenged my little mind for a few days, but I perservered. Then when I finally beat it, the whole world changed. It was mindblowing to me then, but it's not as cool now. But it will always be a fond memory for me.

Surprised I'm the first to mention it:
The end of Slimy Spring Galaxy
Slimy+Spring.jpg

The entire level is this tranquil, relaxed swim through an underground spring with calm ambient music, and at the very end as you come out the music just stops, and you hear is birds chirping as you stare out at a sunset. It was...something.
That was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen in a Mario game. I just stopped and stared at the scenery for about a minute. I hope the Wii U Mario games will replicate that beauty in every level.

One that just came to mind was playing the ICO demo for the first time. I would spend a good amount of time just messing around with that windmill and pond area. The huge landscapes, relaxed environment, and fun interactions with Yorda was something I hadn't ever seen in a game before.

I can't wait to do it again with the HD re-release :)

The ending of Super Metrood is one of my most memorable game moments. It's my favorite game ending.

I also used to love playing the Genesis with my family. Me and my brother often played Lion King, Aladdin, and the Sonic games. I also remember watching my brother and cousin beat Power Rangers: The Movie every single time he came over. It's such an awesome beat 'em up.

My last one is playing through the whole Mother 3. The experience really sticks with you. Everything about the game is perfect. It is just a great game.

My parents hogging Space invaders on the Hanimex. And my dad being the first to beat the red robot in the reactor in FFVII
I didn't know about grenades :S

-Going to toys r us and buying a a shiny game boy pocket and donkey kong land 1..
-going to Canadian Tire( think it was that place) and getting a genesis with my dad . and sonic 1
-getting a n64 + mario 64
-Going to Microplay and playing a Japanese Dreamcast+ power stone.
-Going to Sega City mississauga and playing guitar freaks, which began my love for music games. ( this must of been 1996 or something)
-Beating mario 3 after playing it all day.( one of the 5 games i had on nes)
-standing in line for a launch ps2, which i still have and it works, how is that possible i have no clue
-getting my first IBM computer and playing wheel of fortune,

I had been playing video games for many years (Pong, Atari, Coleco, NES) but when I played Phantasy Star on the Sega Master System it kicked my love for games into high gear.

The story, the music, the characters, the battles....all of it. Epic.

I was very sad when it was over!

To date one of the best games I have ever played and is always my first thought when someone mentions gaming to me. I still have the original SMS cart in my cabinet behind me.

Timesplitters 2 - Anaconda

I had a friend over spending the night, and my brother did as well. The four of us were playing multiplayer on virus mode when we decided we wanted to play anaconda on the first level. You have to use the pda thing in your inventory at a certain point or something, I don't remember the specifics that well anymore.

I got it loaded up, and we ended up playing it for around 2 hours messing around. Syberia was already a good level, but it always makes me smile when I remember the anaconda fun.
lol me and my friends played the shit out of Time Splitters 2 and all we played was virus on hangar and anaconda =P shit's so tight.

Really fond memory of my Dad renting a japanese Megadrive and Sonic for a week when i was 8-9 and me just being amazed by the parralax scrolling.

Reading Mean Machines (Sega) and getting hyped for Sonic Tuesday.

Spoiling Xmas for myself by ripping a little bit of wrapping paper to confirm I had Mortal Kombat 2 and Micro Machines 2 for Meagadrive

Also, being scared shitless at a C64 game called Forbidden Forest.

Buying C64 tapes from a local newsagent for ÂŁ2.99.

A GTA like game for Amiga 500 (A day in the life???)

Echo the ladder in MGS3...epic

This has highlighted to me that I have been a gamer now for 20 years - can see myself continuing for amny more :D

remember playing nes for the first time and playing duck hunt/super mario bros

i also remember playing an snes that i owned for the first time. I had sf2 and i was struggling mightily to do a fireball let alone a dragon punch.

Two small things in the first Shenmue, that illustrate the game attention on details, and that I still fondly remember :
- walking down the residential street from the Hazuki home to Dobuita, and hearing a dog barking in the background.
- while watching a small park, I noticed a little girl playing in the sandbox. After a few seconds, she raised her head and waved, I looked in the same direction and saw her grandfather sitting in a bench, waving back.

Nothing technically exceptional, except that you rarely see so subtle details in games (especially in 2000).

A lot of parts from the first onimusha. I don't know the best way to say it, but it was the first game i bought on my ps2 that wasn't 'popular'. I had only played gta and sports games before then. I have a lot of memories from it, especially since I took turns playing it with my friend and brother. Things that stood out was the first boss and that water puzzle.

I remember seeing NFL 2k on dreamcast for the first time playing on replay. I thought it looked just like real life.

I remember thinking that FF7 was as good as graphics got.

I remember playing secret of mana as my first rpg.

I remember playing Chrono Trigger and how it INSTANTLY became my favorite game. It was really expensive though so I had to rent it, and blockbuster only had 1 copy, so i had to wait forever.

Illusion of Time - the drifting scene

For whatever reason, I always remember this and it was the first scene I thought of reading this thread.

God hand did a lot of things right, a lot of the scenes and fight made me chuckle, devil hand fight and music really pumped me up the first time I fight him, amazing game with a lot of great memories and encounters:
Fighting double demon the first time in a cage, dude shoots fucking lasers! And those moment where you're out of health, you're at the last guy, you dodge every fucking attack so you could stay alive and the level up bar wouldn't stop going up, you kill the fucker and the demon pops , going apeshit and you're like FUUUUU!

I enjoyed every moment of ICO, I bought it without knowing what it was, and it was great, the moment of
meeting Yorda and up to the departure and finding her on the beach, it's small touches like her speaking a different language but it's so basic you could guess what her last words were, it made you feel like you built up a bond with the characters from just a few simple dialogues and event you went through

Playing Street Fighter 2 on a console for the first time was great too, especially when you've probably spent hundreds of dollars in the arcades :lol

Is that what they called it in Europe? It was Illusion of Gaia here. And that was my 2nd rpg ever.

I didn't know about grenades :S

I don't think I had to use grenades to beat it, you really just can't attack it when it is ready to counter.

When I discovered that you can go down of your tank in blaster master.

In Star Fox Snes, I think it was the third scene in Easy Route, when you fight against an entire armada, and you must go inside the ships to destroy them from inside. The graphic effects were incredible at the time.

In Super Mario World, when I discovered that the music changes when you mount Yoshi.

In Mario Paint, when I finally could click the Star in the title screen. Actually, discovering that ecah character had a different effect was amazing. And you may laugh at me, but then the computers I knew only had keyboard, and when I played with Snes mouse I thought: "wow, this is the future"

Megaman X, when Zero saves you from Vile.

Remembered when I got my hands on Diddy Kong Racing, and when I got home I was allowed ten minutes to play it before going to bed. Those ten minutes alone blew me away: The game looked better than almost anything else at the time and I couldn't believe I was hearing those critters chatter throughout the whole race. For a good while it was the most impressive N64 game I played.

Also Felix the Cat for the NES being the first game I ever completed, when I was 4 or 5.

Super Mario World, this was the first game I played religiously, I remember I was such an expert, that I memorised each level, I could do speed runs and I knew every secret, why because it was the only game I owned for ages.

Alex Kidd in Miracle world brings back tons of memories, I remember I used to play at my neighbours, however I didn't used to get that far, used to get game over after once of the motorbike stages.

Twisted Metal 2, I remember me and my cousin used to play Twisted Metal 1 demo over and over again, because it was a demo, the demo used to restart with tons of loading screens. However, one day I was at a gamestore with my parents and I saw Twisted MEtal 2 (didn't even know their was a sequel), went crazy to get the game, and my parents bought it for me, finally me and my cousin got to play a full Twisted MEtal game the Paris stage was our favourite.

Donkey Kong County 2, I remember being amazed by the graphics of the first game, but this game really got me immersed, I remember loving the music and doing all the secrets.

Yoshi's Island, I fucking loved this game when I was young, one of the coolest thing I remember was that the bosses were bigger versions of regular enemies.

Suikoden, this was my first ever JRPG and has a special place in my heart, probably the story sucks now but I remember loving the story, the death of certain characters, the recruiting, the music and etc. It made me a huge fan of JRPGs

Reaching the attic of the sailor's mansion in Thief 3. You find the sad, rambling widow and suddenly I felt like shit for stealing all her shit. I mean I REALLY felt bad for her. I wanted to back through the house and put everything back where I found it.

MGS1, Snake taking off his scuba gear in the elevator, standing up like a boss, then the "Metal Gear Solid" logo pops up. This game was clearly going to be EPIC, but this was when "epic" wasn't such a cliche.

Super Castlevania 4, when you're fighting Dracula and he's nearing death, the spooky theme music segues into Simon's Theme with that rousing organ riff. It's just so dramatic and awesome, a perfect climax to a game that blew my mind with its music and atmosphere.

Resident Evil 4, in that church/graveyard area. I was hiking up that dirt road towards the church in pouring rain and darkness, then lightning flashed and I saw the silhouette of one of those freaky wolves standing at the top of the hill, I just froze in place. It was just such a perfectly classic horror moment. Actually this game was basically 20 hours straight of memorable moments like this.

This was recent, but affecting enough to mention.

Running over a hydrant when I pull up to the nightclub in Mafia II.

I come back out a few hours later and the street around the car is flooded.

Something about that made me smile quite a bit.
Mafia is great with this kind of stuff. I remember returning to a store I violently robbed and seeing the entrance wrapped in a police tape.

Metal Gear Solid was that one game that was so good, I didn't beat it alone. I spent 10 or so hours beating it with a friend of mine to a point where I had to come back to his place the day after just to clear it. With all that done, we still got the Octocon ending :'( and am I the only one who realized that there was a South Park quote said when Merryl finds the DARPA chief dead?

Playing Robocop 2 in an arcade and dumping 30p after 30p in trying to get past the first level. There was a section where a pickup drove into you and you had to smash the button as fast as you could but it was a dodgy button so it was almost impossible..

My all-time favorite little game moment comes from one of my all-time favorite games, Earthbound.

The Mother series has always followed themes like "it's the journey not the destination that matters" and "there's no place like home" and, of course, a boy's love for his mother, but there is nothing in the series - or in gaming anywhere - that quite captures the essence of a mother's love for her child than this scene (late game Earthbound spoiler).

After spending an entire game going after the eight points, an entire game of hardships expressed in humour finally overcome... Ness is made to reflect on his roots as he saunters slowly up the hill in his mind; in the aching moments between fights when he simply wishes to be home, safe.

Ness-WalkBack.gif

His mother lovingly peers over his crib and says a prayer I can only imagine all great parents must wish in the early hours as they gaze into their babies eyes as he sleeps peacefully, hoping against hope for incorruptibility.

NesssCrib.gif

"I don't think he needs to be rich and famous," his mother whispers, "but I want him to be a thoughtful, strong boy." Is there any more perfect, honest desire? Is there anything purer than a mother's love?

The first videogame I saw that really made me look at it in awe was Shadow of the Beast on the Amiga...

I had to wait a long time before any videogame gave me a similar feeling...
