I tryed this some 2 years ago with my sister .. it went like this :

Darth Vader :
"no, i'm your father !"

Sister looks at me and says

"Hey ! Just like Toy Story 2 !" =D

me :

=O

That reminds me of when I was watching the new Star Trek movie and I can't remember the exact line but it was Simon Pegg doing one of Scotty's classics, either "I canny do it captain, I don't have the power" or "scotty, beam me up", my wife turned to me and said "haha, what's that from?"

I have never let off such a sigh of disappointment in all my life.

You're a better man then me, I'd see that as grounds for divorce.

Hmmm yeah, that looks fake sadly - the need to cue to the camera for a few seconds ruined it.

You know, I can't really remember a time where I didn't know the big twist. I mean I was probably shown those movies when I was 4 or 5, so I don't have a specific "HOLY SHIT" moment to think back to.

Was it larger than the sigh she let out when she found out you were into Star Trek?

Why would you want to hurt your kids so much?

It was out of my control. They started watching them at grandma's house during one of those weekend-long Spike network marathons.

:(

The sad part, is they like them better than the originals. (They were only 5! Don't judge!)

Nah man, that's from Ace Ventura.

My 7 year old daughter watched ESB for the first time last week and her initial reaction was that she didn't believe it. She thought Vader was lying, and then when we watched Return of the Jedi and she found out he wasn't, she was pretty mad.

This is exactly why Lucas put Yoda's confirmation in RotJ. He consulted a child psychologist who told him that without another character's confirmation, children would consider Vader's revelation to be a lie.

i won't judge them, but you are the worst parent ever.

Fake.

And speaking of fake, I was 8 when Empire came out. As god is my witness, I thought that Vader was lying to Luke, to trick him into the Dark Side. I held onto my beliefs, and argued it until Jedi came out. After all these years, i never run into anyone else who was "fooled". Was I the only one?

You don't have be into Star Trek to know these simple, incredibly popular references.

At least you got the line right. Most people say "Beam me up, Scotty!"

I saw Empire when I was 4, in the theater. I just accepted it and wasn't shocked. I was way more concerned with Han Solos fate. Waiting 3 years to find out if he was going to be ok was like torture!

and they didn't even ask you any questions.

My son is 2, in time he will get the pleasure of 4-6 and I will film him.

edit. reading this back sounds terrible

I'm one of the lucky ones who saw this in the theatre when it first came out. I too thought Vader was lying, until later when Luke was on the Falcon and he seemed to accept it. Such a great moment.

Fast forward 30 years and now I'm a dad and cannot for the life of me get my son interested in Star Wars. He loves video games and cartoons and lots of other stuff I like, but getting him hooked on Star Wars just hasn't happened. It's been a few years since I tried...think it's time to give it another whirl.

Maybe he will be interested when he is older, I remember hating Star wars up until my teens.

They may never like it. Despite being named after Star Wars characters, both my kids are indifferent towards it. My daughter much prefers Ghostbusters, and my son is too young to have any real care for it. I've already come to terms with the fact that they aren't going to love Star Wars as much as I do, as long as they don't become Trekkies they can still live here.

That's a great little anecdote.

Ah, the days when Lucas would seek other people's opinions and listen to them...

I saw the movies back when they came out. Didn't care back then and don't care for them now. If anything I think they're worse now than back then.

I think you have to hook the kids early. Back in the day the special effects would wow you but now that factor is gone and the movies aren't exactly great.

I know the chances of my son liking it as much as I do is pretty slim at this point. But he's older now than the first time I really tried (he's 8 1/2 now) and we just got done with all the Harry Potter movies, so I'm hoping he's more open to it.

And I gotta ask, what characters are your kids named after? My son is Kyle, pretty much because I was playing Jedi Academy when my wife was pregnant with him (don't tell her that).

My kids are Janine Leia and Collin Luke. Collin was almost Collin Anakin, but..... Luke was a much more wizard name.

Same. I was 6 and didn't care at all about the Luke / Vader thing but was worryingly convinced for years that Han Solo; the coolest guy in the Galaxy, with the coolest ship ever built, with a swagger-filled Sasquatch for a best friend, had just been killed! Couldn't comprehend him coming back after getting statue'd.
