LittleBigPlanet Eurogamer review

THIS is what I was worried about.

Especially when it comes to reaching a decent number of customers. User Created content has never been big on consoles, and not making it ultra easy was always going to be a problem.

Yeah i agree, they really should have made some type of planning tool. I for one suffer from that usual, but sneaky "blank mind" when trying to be creative.

Sad thing is if we asked for it and MM knowingly understands this and provide, it won't be recorded and do much to the final score. One of the crappy things about continuous-dev supported games.

I don't know why, many people so far seem to really enjoy it and made great levels.

Even I enjoyed making levels.

FU Eurogamer! LBP deserves an 11
yes yes its a good score especially from the dummies that gave MGS4 an 8, but this is a game that's beyond innovative. It is a once in a generation type game. Anything below a 10 is insult to sackboy

I fundamentally disagree with the complaint that making levels is too complicated. There's a shitload of tutorials for every minor thing and the whole editor is extremely intuitive. I'm not technical at all and not really into creating stuff but I got addicted by it in the beta.

Also because you can immediately switch to play the level and then tweak it. I think the editor is near perfect, it's totally fantastic.

I think the problem with some reviews is that from some you can find legitamate complaints, and in this one its the slow switching between the 3 planes, but then you have the personal skill slant such as "i found the game too hard" and "i wasn't a prodigy at making levels within the first day".

Its a good score nonetheless, but when I read a reviewer complain about "the game has a Lives system", I have to wonder at exactly the reviewer started playing games.

What are you all complaining about, only gears of war 2 will get 10 from eurogamer, because it's gears of war.

Only the biggest hyped games get 10, and that's gears of war 2 at the moment of all the games that are coming out.

Thats the first Ive heard of anyone saying the creation phase is "hard" not fun. Its very simple and open with lots of tutorials that make it easy. You can kill hours and hours on end just screwing around with all the tools. I consider myself very 'non creative' and I managed to put a really cool level together after just spending a little time with it.

Why would you be worried about this?

Did you play the beta?

If so, you would know how amazing the beta levels were even from a limited pool of users.

Yes, level design is not for everyone. It's a process that is, by its very nature, time consuming. Not only do you have to make your level enjoyable to play, but aesthetically it has to be pleasing to look at. This process can become time consuming, but for those that love creativity -- love designing just for the sake of design and seeing others enjoy their work -- that time is spent having fun.

There is no doubt in my mind that the user created levels will be amazing. They already were in the beta with a limited tool set and very short period of time.

I don't see this as a problem at all. The top 1% of designers define this game, not the 99% of those that don't have the time or care.

If Eurogamer scores a PS3 game with a 9 it means it's an 11. Isn't that from the same guys who gave MGS4 an 8 and GTA4 a 10? Yeah...

Anyway well deserved the 11. :D

Making levels can be awesome, I stayed up until 5am two days ago making my first level. It's just really addicting because of that feeling of triumph you get whenever you make something cool. :D

ehhh I don't agree with the create-part of the review one bit. Yeah it takes time to learn all the layers it offers, but there isn't a rule that everything you create has to be good. I mean you can just fuck around in create mode, make something really simple and publish it and still feel some sort of acomplishment. I just don't agree with people saying that the create part is to complicated....how hard is it it to drop two blocks, hang a grab sponge between them and set the ground on fire? See! There you have a level that would be made by a noob casual gamer who just got out of the tutorials. Next time he/ she might put some more stuff in it, maybe a moving platform, maybe a race, who knows. What do people expect? That casual gamers have to be able to recreate the Mona Lisa with LPB tools.

Anyway I can understand his gripes and I suppose it's a fair score for his impressions of the game. I myself would rate it higher.

Yep!same with me, when I got something working the way I wanted to it felt great :D

I don't even care about the creation part to be honest. I've had a tremendous amount of fun (10+ hours) in the beta just playing user made levels and commenting, rating, etc.

There's a ridiculous amount of content in this game and the cream will rise to the top.

But Gears 1 got an 8. Also, the second most super mega blockbuster game this year, MGS4, also got an 8 from them...

A 9/10 is an awesome score, can't wait for my copy to come in...

Seriously, with that God of War, World of Colour, Mad Mansion-guy making such amazing stuff in just a couple of days... Can you imagine what happens when someone spends an entire month or even more polishing one level? Couple that with patches from MM, LBP will get even better over time, like wine or something.

Once you understand what does what in the creation part, its a snap. There are tutorials for everything you use.
I think it can still be a bit intimidating for a really casual gamer but:

LittleBigPlanet is a great platform game. It's not a perfect one. It doesn't need to be, though, because its creative tools turn it into something else entirely, a unique, hilarious, endless entertainment. Even - and this is an absolutely crucial point - if you never use them.

This is a really good point, never using the level creation abilities doesn't make the game any less amazing. Playing other users' levels online is great fun too. I played a really cool Wipeout level the other day, it was hilarious fun

Oh god I know. Media Molecule did a great job with the game, but I'm sure some users will make levels that are just out of this world. Some OCD gamer might make our holiday season spectacular! :D

I agree with the score. With the controls + difficulty of creating issues, there's just no way this game deserves a 10/10.

Create content push LBP unlimited fun it is where I'm happy.

Really I can't wait for after launch-day I mean it should be much more than Beta users. I can't imagination! There will be someone prefect artist out there. Come on - let it out!

It is only flaw for me, no subtitle because I'm deaf :( but still one day anyway

LittleBigPlanet lets them run wild, with unprecedented results, but it locks the majority out of the creative process, because it's time-consuming and simply not very enjoyable.

This is where they justify the 9/10. And... really, if you want to do great levels, how can that not be time-consuming, do they expect MM to provide templates of parts of levels so it is easier (and every level looks like a variation of all the others)? Not very enjoyable is subjective and lots of people are having lots of fun with it. I strongly disagree with this.

Should I buy this game or Gears of War 2?

Creating difficulty is a defect of the user not the game, you can't take points for that : )

I think level creation will actually get easier over time, when there are hundreds (thousands?) of players creating community-shared levels, making created objects collectables, etc. People who want to make things like rocket sleds or hot air balloons but are a bit overwhelmed by the process can use pre-made and shared pieces, scale and decorate them to fit the syle of their own level, and not have to worry overmuch about piecing it all together. Basically, the more people there are uploading and sharing objects and levels, the easier it will be for casual users to get into the creation aspect, which in turn will lengthen the lifespan of the game for everyone.

I think the Beta was a way to stop reviewers saying

"The long lasting appeal of LBP depends on the community involvement"

The Beta showed, before reviews were written, that the community has and will make awesome levels and theyre easy to make.

Good move Sony.

I dont know whats worse; the fact the GTA IV got a ten and this did not, or the puke inducing hyperbole from the fans...

I think we're arguing different points here.

I haven't played the BETA, but my concern from the somewhat limited knowledge I have of this game, was how easy or hard it would be to actually create something.

The earlier threads about this game had member upon member complaining this game either wouldn't sell or HOPING it would sell 'as much as it deserves to'. I doubted this game would sell much at all regardless of marketing push.

The BIGGEST hurdle it faces is the fact that user created content is just not big on consoles, and likely never will be.

But, for it to be the ONE game that made it work on consoles, the creation aspect needed to be as simple and dumbass straight forward as possible. This doesn't seem to be the case.

In other words, I'm sure the game is great, and will receive critical acclaim, but I don't expect it to sell much. That's all.

some of the best levels came out within 2 days of the beta release, it was insane. I can't wait to see what people do with more time and assets.

Maybe they thought they could do as well as the folks from MM in 5 minutes or something.

And I don't know why they compare LBP to spore for this part. It's completely stupid.

Anyway, that's a great score. The text itself is hit and miss tho

Good score regardless of source imo. The beta, despite it's flaws, sold me on the game and I'm glad I have this pre-ordered. I'll see everybody here online come release date :)
