Lollipop Chainsaw: Satire, Sexist, or Just Plain Stupid?

As the game is out in all three major territories and fairly short, I imagine most people either have finished it (some multiple times) or are on their way to.

Naturally, as it's "the thing" in the industry lately, the discussion is starting to take place: is it sexist? Smart satire/commentary? Plain foolishness?

The game's OP is all about funny lines, unlocking costumes, and how Zombie Baseball is insanely easy/hard. That's how it should be. No need to dampen the fun and I think this is big enough for it's own thread.

Personally, I think the game is really smart in its satire and commentary with some specific moments I won't spoil, but here's where I open the floor.

Mixture of satire and brilliantly stupid. The game never takes itself seriously and isn't trying to deliver any message really in any regard. Juliet also wears the magically enchanted decapitated head of her boyfriend, who got bitten by a Zombie and decapitating and wearing him was her 'solution' to stop the poison from reaping to his brain. Later in the game
Nick feels like he's just an accessory to her rather than a person and resents her for not giving him the choice of what to do with his life.
However, like everything else in the game, the end conclusion is not really serious
and we end up fighting a giant man baby and then in turn Nick comes back from Heaven as a midget.

Juliet is essentially a lot like Garcia from Shadows of the Damned. Sexualized to an extent, kind of stupid, but with a lot of heart maybe just not quite in the right place, and both essentially parodying a character trope. It's not really sexist as well since I swear the game makes as many jabs at males as they do at females.

I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be tongue in cheek, but the marketing is trying to do it's damnedest to make me think otherwise.

Definitely a mix of satire and stupid, but I think it does land in a weird place re: sexism, especially with regards to the costumes and their descriptions. (I think the zombie descriptions are fucking hilarious though in how foul they can get).

The costumes are more of a joke at the audience too though if you read some of their descriptions. They're playing it up to an awfully big extent.

The game is almost completely satire.

I think at various points it sort of dips its toes into each of the above. The game is varyingly successful at being satire or a bit of stupid (yet clever) fun. I feel that it finds its groove more as the game goes on, though (or, at least, that's my experience so far).

No bad mouthing this game allowed. Setting a trend for anime costumes (on disc, not even DLC!) that needs to be propagated.

I've finished it but I'm not sure I am in any position to comment on the game's message. I like the game, that much I do know. As for the underlying theme's and messages... I got nothing. I don't much care for the fanservice costumes such as the bikini's and the pink jumpsuit one... is that my problem or the game's problem?

It's just plain stupid. I like Suda 51 stuff generally but there's nothing brilliant about this one.

EDIT: Not down on the gameplay though, it seems to be their best work yet gameplay wise.

Attempts satire through overt sexism, yet comes off as plain stupid.

Could be this.

That said, I really don't have a problem with the game (As oposed to, say, Tomb Raider). At least this game has its clear audience and its clear tone. Not interested in buying it because of the gameplay I've seen, though.

I haven't played it, but as a fan of James Gunn and Troma, these same questions could easily be asked of those movies, like Tromeo & Juliet. Excessively trashy on purpose with (arguable) hints of satire and intelligence. I think maybe John Waters does that style best.

It's completely shameless and for all the wrong reasons, but I have to admit I kind of like seeing so many people talk about a Grasshopper game. The way Shadows of the Damned came and went with the majority of people not even noticing, and many of their games selling so poorly, just seeing multiple threads and articles mention it feels nice to a longtime Grasshopper fan. Even if, like I said, it's for all the wrong reasons and I know it's mostly due to horrible, shameless marketing. My mind is breaking apart.

On the other hand, I'd agree with anybody who says that the gaming world has more than enough trashy, grindhouse-inspired games and overly sexualized women and Lollipop Chainsaw isn't doing anything to help that issue, regardless of how satirical or clever it may be.

Awesome, is the correct answer.

Actually, I have no idea. I've literally not seen any footage of this game, and the only thing I even remotely know about it is what the main character looks like and only cause of that one booth babe dressed as that character.

It's all of those things, but I never really get offended when things are deliberately trying to be offensive because I realize it's just lounge in cheek. I'd only cry foul if I felt it was mean spirited

All three in my opinion, to varying degrees. Its more satire and dumb fun than sexist, but Juliet's sex appeal is still a significant factor.

Oh it's definitely satire. Have you read any of the "named" zombie's descriptions? The one that has so far made me laugh the hardest was the description of one of the football players who was the most popular guy on the team because his teammates all thought he gave the best BJ's. Yep, that's what it says.

However let's not loose sight of the fact that LP is also a really fun game that doesn't take anything seriously. It's supposed to be laughed at and enjoyed.

I'd go with stupid by just seeing videos.

However I'm sure that opinion would change once playing.

See: Bayonetta.

I don't find the overly overt sexualization neither humorous/cute nor titillating so it fails on both counts. At least it isn't mean-spirited.

First post nails it.

Zany satire that doesn't take itself too seriously, in the tradition of No More Heroes, Shadows of the Damned, and Bayonetta. I think it's great.

Looking at the G4 E3 demo they had of it, I just passed it off as "japan: the game". Nothing to get offended about if you've seen games from there before.

What's the satire? I wasn't aware of any such lofty goals.

I say sexist and stupid, but not stupid or sexist enough to condemn it.

To quote Jim Sterling's review, which I think is quite accurate:

"It's one of the straight-up dumbest games you will ever encounter, but at the end of the day, it proves one thing ...

Just because something is dumb, that doesn't mean it can't be brilliant.
"

I made the OT, so yes I did.

I just don't find this topic worth discussing at all. It's a silly video game where you kill zombies.

rainbows pop out of zombies when you chainsaw them. I think people should figure it doesn't take itself seriously ftom that alone.

I personal feel there's nothing wrong with Lollipop Chainsaw. The game felt like it was poking fun at all the stupid stereotypical American teen films and their portrayal of American school. You know, the guys who don't get their way and suddenly call every girl a slut because of it. I felt this was happening with the zombies, and also that these things were evil, coming from a evil places, and we all know what happens when evil comes from evil places, yeah, you get The Exorcist and it's awful, nasty, but devilish lines about Jesus fucking and what not.

My two cents anyway.
