Looking for a 360? Some info I picked up last night

Apparently you believe that Microsoft is more concerned with buzz than console sales. I'm sure they aer concerned with generating hype, but the bottom line has to be to leverae this window of time they have before the Playstation 3 hits shelves. Early hype won't do a thing to satve that off and they won't readily waste this small opportunity they have at a Christmas Season devoid of a Next Generation competitor.

You're missing my point. I don't think the shortage will be that long. I believe you'll soon see more of the XB360's on the shelves. This way they're getting the buzz and the consolesales. Cause people who try to get it and won't find it is probable to look for it again -- or do another preorder for the next batch. They've got at least eight months before the PS3 hits the shelves or more. There's no set date for PS3, and it wouldn't surprise me if we don't see it before fall or later. Of course, there's Revlution also.

I work at a department store and we were only allowed to sell 20 out of 35 units.

wtf?!

See?

According to a local best buy and microsoft customer service themselves, every week from now until Christmas there should be a full shipment of 360's to all major retailers. But who knows the could have lied to me :lol

well, i dont think it's microsoft holding out. i know when i worked at gamestop last year and the DS was hard to come by, we had about 20 saved in the back for early Black Friday customers. It was more of a store decision. department stores like walmart and best buy could very well have systems being saved for friday, but im sure gamestop and eb will not be selling any to non-reserve customers or they'll be bloodshed from those who dont have theirs yet.

They need to get these on shelves for Black Friday and then leading up to Christmas. Missing this season to generate hype would be a colossal mistake.

See what? A single person claiming that he was asked to hold back 360's without supplying any proof. Gobble, gobble.

If this was a widespread phenomenon, this place would be flooded with EB Games and Gamestop register jockeys with corporate memo scans and inventory screenshots.

There will be plenty, and this thread shows that their are already more in the channel. How come they can be restocked the day after launch at 8am in many stores?

Yes, and I believe they'll deliver more XB360's allt the way up to christmas. But they'll still release them in "clusters" so they'll get sould out - and the next week (or maybe next day) they're back on the shelves. I doesn't cut down on sales, it just creates hype and makes people struggle more to get one. I mean, look at some of the other threads where you can see people talking about lines with 200 people outside a store. That's good PR, if anything is.

He's not the only one who's said that, you know?

Assuming that they are available at stores who sold out yesterday (has this been confirmed?), shipments could arrive daily for the first few weeks. It just doesn't make sense for Best Buy to turn rabid customers away, only to stock the shelves the following morning with retail that they just sat on. No sense at all.

Yes it does. It creates HYPE. People will first get dissapointed, but damn, they'll be happy when they finally get one "before they're sold out again".

I am sure they are getting daily shipments. I don't actually mean that they have them piled in the back of stores but that mirosoft's distribution is ready to fulfill a larger demand. Therefore I think there will be plenty for black friday.

Many customers in store with lots of money in their pockets that will be back to pick up what they original came for when it's back in stock and pick up some dvds or whatever in the meantime ;)

You guys did see the wholesale prices, right? The stores don't actually make money selling the consoles. And see how many people picked up accessories while they were there and didn't get a system.

But that's what these people are saying. That they are told to sit on units that have already arrived.

I agree that Microsoft it letting these units trickle to market, they have said that much themselves, but to say that Redmond has told retailers to sit on the units that have shipped is a bit harder for me to swallow. Perhaps if anybody was suplying some kind of proof, I could believe it, but a random couple of d00ds on GAF talking about holding back sales doesn't cut it for me.

I'm saying that I think that it's a bit of both.

You've got it all wrong. I don't care if it's the retailers who's sitting on the items or if it's MS who's slowly pouring the XB360's out to the stores. The result is the same -- and that's my point. It creates HYPE.

well, people want what they can't have. If it's known that to get an X360 between now and Xmas is "impossible" then any fence sitters or um-ers and ah-ers will jump on the unit. If everyone gets their fill at launch, then the buzz will die down. What would be even worse is if it appears that there isn't demand. It's, IMO, shitty - i hate the tactic. It really is crap.

This tactic really works phenomenaly well with the casuals. It creates a whole mentality where even seeing one is considered rare, to the point where people might be compeled to buy the console even if they have little interest in games. I saw it in action quite often during the PS2 launch and several months afterwards.

Today my boss and I went to Best buy to buy 4 plasma screens for the meeting rooms. I asked our associate about the 360s. He said they were sold out. My boss being the A-hole he is told him to get the manager. The manager came over and told us just to be there first thing Friday and you should be able to get one. I am just relaying what was told to me. Maybe he was bullshitting us to close the deal on the screens and warranties, who knows but I will be there Friday just in case.

I can see stores holding units for Black Friday as analysts see that day as an indication of what the holiday sales will be like. Have great sales, analysts speak positively of you and the stock price rises.

Anyway, we went to Target (for those local in Broward county, FL - its the one in Plantation).
Holy shit, dude, you must live right near me. I work in the B&N right around the corner from there. Stop in and drop a line next time you're there. I'm the music manager.

for anyone who thinks stores would not hold back units for Friday, answer this question for me. why would employees at Target and Best Buy have been telling people before launch that they were not allowed to tell how many units they had?

Im starting to buy into this Black Friday theory.

Bestbuy is holding back for sure. They had more yesterday but flat out refused to sell to me cos I didn't have a ticket. I'm like WTF, there's no one else here :lol

I momentarily considered going myself this morning and picking up one to eBay, but the profit isn't worth the possibility of me disappointing some kid this Holiday because he didn't get his new toy.

Very cool of you.

Here in NY, I hit up today, after work, a BB (sold out), CC (sold out), Target (sold out), Toys R Us (sold out), K-Mart (apparently never received), and for kicks, a Gamestop (sold out).

On Thanksgiving? =P

yeah, they are open.

My shitty ass K-Mart on 34th street has NOTHING. Not one 360 flier, game, accessory... not a hint of a new system. In fact, I haven't been there in over a year, but their game section is half the size it used to be.

damn, gonna have to call some stores friday morning and hopefully nab one in reno on my way to catch my flight. cross your fingers for me

So, last night me and the darling Mrs. DarkNemus were out doing our usual running errands thing. (Trust me, real life sucks). Anyway, we went to Target (for those local in Broward county, FL - its the one in Plantation). So i'm standing at the 360 shelf looking for a play & charge kit.. (which by the way seem as hard to find as the damn system), and the clerk there and I strike up a little conversation.. basically goes like this:

Me: Hi, do you know if you happen to have any P&C kits? maybe in the back that they're holding or something?

Her: No, I'm pretty sure we're out of those.

Me: Oh, bummer - bet you guys had a huge crowd for the 360 release, huh?

Her: (seeming to be a bit more comfortable in the conversation now): Yeah (then she kind of looks around and says this lower) but you know what, its stupid.. we have more in the back!

Me: Huh??

Her: Yes, seriously - be here at 8AM in the morning when the doors open and head to Electronics, you'll be able to get a 360.. trust me.

Me: Wow, umm, thanks.

Her: No problem..

Now, normally I'd think this is just general retail BS - but she seemed like she knew what she was talking about - plus the fact that she was very concerned about saying it when management types were around. So, I told a couple local friends who are looking for one. I momentarily considered going myself this morning and picking up one to eBay, but the profit isn't worth the possibility of me disappointing some kid this Holiday because he didn't get his new toy.

Now, there's a second part to this story. Armed with this information, I made a phone call to a friend of mine. He happens to work stock at Best Buy. He revealed basically the same thing to me - that they have more in the back, they're just trickling them out for now (that was the exact phrase he used)

I have NO CLUE if it is this way where you are - but, if it is, then your chances of getting a 360 are alot higher than previously thought. Anyway, just thought I'd share the info. Have a great day.

You BLEW it! She wanted you to ask her out! What a giant walking pussy.

So what stores are the biggest culprits? Because 8am only has one shot. Better pick the right store. Right now from words here it seems Target, Wal-mart, Best Buy, and K-mart?

Now that's weird.....why is K-Mart open on Thanksgiving? Did any K-Marts get X360 systems in?

The one in my area(Northern New Jersey) got around 10 in, all cores. They sold out instantly since people were lined up. I got too used to being able to walk down their in the morning and pick up the new console. =/

The most likely answer is the reason they are holding back stock is because they dont know when they would receive them again and in what amount.

Jack and Shit.

Target = nada
Best Buy= zip
TRU = zilch
Sears = fuck you buddy, 150+ waiting list (WTF?)
KB Toys = WTF is an Xbox360?
Walmart = haha, would you like a Symphonic TV?
EB/Gamestop = shoulda pre-ordered, BEEEEYOTCH
Radio Shack = pay me 1K and wait until Spring
Costco = wait until Radio Shack gets theirs
Meijers = Wrangler jeans on sale

This is all in Illinois/Northern Indiana. If there's a 360 to be found retail as of this post, its in a town with one horse and no sheriff.

Combo. I didn't even really ask at EB/Gamestop, that just would've been pointless. The chick at KB seemed like she was just glad anybody knew the store still existed.

Oh, and I forgot Sam'sClub = 25 lbs of ground beef for 12.99, but no 360s

Score! My coworker's son works in Wal-mart's electronics dept. She's going to let me know when the next shipment comes in, and will even take my money so her son can give me his 20% discount.

Congrats/good luck. I'm calling my KMart daily. That seems to be my last shot.

When target advertises a console in the paper, such as the 2day sale, we hold a few units so we dont have people pissed off thursday morning when we have the rush... This usually calms the people who are like

OMFGWTFBBQ YOU ADVERTITSE SOMEYTHING AND YOU DONT HAVE IT UFCK TQARGERT!!

yea... thats about it.

Just got back from Sears. I live in a town with a Sears that never got their launch allotment and I've been checking in daily. The lady that's been helping me out all along told me today that an e-mail from corporate communicated that those Sears that had not yet received their Xbox 360 allotments will not carry the system.

She expects the smaller Sears stores to start selling the console in July or so.
