I'm making a short documentary film on the filmmaker Akira Kurosawa, and I'm looking for some laid back, instrumental music of Asian origin to play in the background of certain sequences.

Any suggestions? (Preferably ones that involve free downloads? I'm short on cash :p)

Seriously? I thought that by putting oriental I'd be in the safe zone. What would the correct term be? Asian? Eastern?

Chink music? Seriously, I'd assume it would be "Eastern Music" though how you then differentiate between Chinese and Japanese and like Indian, I'm not sure.

teriasireiats has a good suggestion. also, make sure your b roll has plenty of old men with fu manchus.

ps, the word you want is 'japanese', since that's what you're looking for

The obvious answer would be music from Kurosawa's movies :)

The San Francisco Taiko Dojo. (Did I spell that right?) They came and played for my university and I went and saw them. They did the opening music for Rising Sun (Wesley Snipes and Sean Connery) and a heckuva lot of older stuff. They performed with all kinds of instruments, drums, flutes, strings, all those different classifications for instruments that escape my mind.

:lol

If you can track it down, Yoko Kanno did a score for the documentary on China for NHK a few years back and it was pretty impressive.

Honestly, oriental isnt a bad word over here as far as I'm aware (UK), what's so bad about it all of a sudden? Does that mean we can't use the term occidental either? Seriously, I need updating on this before I piss someone off :)

I will suggest 12 Girls Band. You may have seen a commercial for their Eastern Energy album on TV. Their basically a band of 12 girls, and each of the different girls plays a different traditional Chinese instrument. All instrumental, and very good.

Edit: They are fairly popular too, so you shouldn't have a problem acquiring their music by yourself. Or, IM me and I can hook you up somehow.
