aendeuryu writes "The first reviews are in for Madden '06, and the reception is underwhelming -- it's scoring an average rating of 79% on gamerankings.com (at the time of this submission). The reviewers on Gamespot (7.8) and 1up.com (9.0) have different takes on the game, but the readership of both sites doesn't (7.4 and 7.8 respectively). Gamespot's criticisms put the game in a less-than-exciting light: the new QB-vision feature adds realism but takes away from basic fun, and (perhaps most damning) the graphics rate a 7 out of 10 on what was supposed to be a next-generation title. Normally, a mediocre game release isn't a big deal, except that, because of EA's negotiated exclusivity deal with the NFL, this is the only NFL title you'll get to play this year. So, what are the players to do?"

This gets a huge rolleyes from me, especially the comment on the graphics. I dislike Madden's graphics as much as the next guy but this is not supposed to be a next-gen title. WTF? When will sites unqualified to comment on something learn that it is best not to do so in the first place?

Gamespot's review still cracks me up. The guy made up bugs to bitch about in his review, then when people found out it wasnt real he deleted that part of the written review :lol

This is the part that was deleted

Unfortunately, Madden NFL 06 also has a few gameplay bugs and glitches on both sides of the ball that dampen the experience somewhat. Most of these are pretty minor things, though one bug in particular stands out as especially bad. Essentially, stat-tracking for passing in Madden NFL 06 is broken. Any time you take a sack or throw an interception in the game, for some bizarre reason, it results in negative passing yards. It's as if you threw the ball to a receiver and he ran backward for six yards whenever you get sacked. Last we'd checked, the NFL doesn't deduct passing yards for sacks or for interceptions, meaning that this is a particularly ugly bug.

Now it says

Unfortunately, Madden NFL 06 also has a few gameplay bugs and glitches on both sides of the ball that dampen the experience somewhat. Most of these are pretty minor things, like draw plays where--every single time--your quarterback's vision will be focused straight ahead, as opposed to focusing in the direction of a particular receiver. This makes it blatantly obvious what you're doing, giving your opponents a great opportunity to come thundering after you. Finally, there are still some AI glitches here and there where running backs will get stuck behind offensive linemen, linemen will get stuck trying to block defenders, and so on. While no specific one of these bugs completely wrecks the game or anything, the combination of multiple issues like these makes Madden 06 seem sloppier than in recent years.

He does realize you can have your QB start with your cone in the middle of the field, right? :lol And I've played 8 games of franchise mode and I havent seen these "AI glitches". There is 1 glitch in the game though that I know about, but it mostly effects online play.

Slashdot is a community blog -- not a journalistic news source -- they're qualified to talk about whatever they feel like.

They can talk about whatever they want. They are qualified to be annoying opensource evangelists. If they write anything good, it's good despite their qualifications not because of them.

I believe that "next-gen graphics" comment was meant to imply that the last game in the series for this line of consoles should have close to perfect graphics. It does not.

It should also be said that now that Madden is the only game in town, reviewers are going to be putting a magnifying glass to all the Madden games now, looking for anything to give an excuse for poor scores. There was always leeway given because of the competition, but now reviewers don't have a choice.

EA's paranoia should've gotten a huge rolleyes from you, not Slashdot's words

/. is not a community blog or a journalistic news source, it's a tech focused fark.com without the humor.

I don't know about EA's US sports games but as far as I'm concerned EA's "soccer" games (FIFA and FIFA Street ) and NBA Live SUCK. And Konami proved that anyone talented enough whether he has the official license or not can rape EA's franchises. The only people buying FIFA nowdays are little kids or casuals who don't know crap about videogames. Unfortunately though there are a lot of little kids or casuals... My 2 cents.

So the 1up guy was wrong, meanwhile everyone playing in the GAF tournies/leagues is loving the game? Sorry gents, but I only take opinions from people who have spent a decent amount of time with the game.

The 1up guy's pretty bad, but he's nothing compared to the 7up guy.

I know the 1up guy personally and he told me that EA actually treated him to a weekend at the magic school of his choice if he gave the new madden a high rating.

Is it possible that he was reviewing a non-final version that still had a few bugs left in it, but these were removed for the final version?

And the 1up reviewer is Wellington from these boards, right?

Given that EA from time to time send out review codes that are actually alpha, it wouldn't be surprising.

Influence peddling is just so disgusting. This topic is sick...giving me a headache from the absolute helpless feeling of not being able to change things. Anyways, Slashdot should ram EA a new asshole with gusto for every single year of NFL exclusivity. Not that it matters, but some share of payback for a small measure of peace of mind is better than nothing. That and 50 cents still wouldn't get me a cup of coffee at Mcdonalds. Now where's my used copy of Madden 2006...

WTF? Go through some of my old posts- I was a primary bitcher regarding EA's exclusive deal and a big fan of Visual Concept's football games. I bashed Madden on numerous occasions. However, that does not mean Madden is a bad game. They arranged deal with the NFL, get the fuck over it.

Slashdot is posting something that has little merit no matter how you look at it.

Not true this time............

.... 99% beta. :lol

The reviewers on Gamespot (7.8) and 1up.com (9.0) have different takes on the game, but the readership of both sites doesn't (7.4 and 7.8 respectively).

Why don't they mention the fact that so many people on those sites gave the game a 0 because of the exclusivity deal and because EA is evil? Fact of the matter is this, if you don't like football as a sport, can't appreciate the minute details that go into making a football game good, and you don't like sports videogames for what they are, then stay the heck away. Bag EA if it's a bad game, but this whole exclusivity thing is bogus. There is a big-ass glitch that has a large effect in online games.... which no one here has mentioned. :lol So much EA and Madden hate in one topic and no one can actually bring up concrete and legitimate points as to why it's actually bad. :lol
