Looks like I'm moving to Seattle

Living/working/paying rent in Silicon Valley really makes me want to move to Seattle when I see threads like this. $1700/mo for a 1/1 in the heart of downtown Seattle sounds like a fucking dream come true.

Anyways OP, I don't live in Seattle so don't have any advice to give, but am very jealous/happy for you.

Consider me jealous OP. One of the cities that make my shortlist for places I'd love to live in the US. I hope I can at least make it over to the city to visit at some point in the relatively near future.

behold, Californians moving up to Seattle thinking it's cheap rent, causing prices to increase around here even more :(
I mean, you literally cannot find a one bedroom apartment in SF for less than I'd say $3,000 a month, and at that price point you'd be living in a dump. $1,700 is absolutely phenomenal.

good point

OP, what kind of job is it? >:| software engineers are making this area really hard to live in unless you're one of 'em

I'll be a promotions producer for one of the local TV stations. I'll probably be poor compared to the engineers and programmers in the area, but it's a good offer for the field, and well over a 100% raise from what I currently make in a much smaller market. Plus, I'm very thrifty, so that helps.

How's the job market in Seattle? I'm trying to move there and am starting to look and apply for jobs.

As much as I don't like the housing costs (I commute from Bremerton), I'm incredibly thankful for the Seattle job market. If you have any IT or tech skills whatsoever, you'll find something.

Very true. The job market outside these fields is also pretty good. Large industrial sector and a generally good local economy across various business types.

The biotech industry has definitely taken some hits and has been downsizing, and it wasn't exactly enormous here to begin with. From what I hear, it has been really difficult to find jobs and a lot of the times, it's just the same group of people shuffling around to different companies. Some companies have been doing well, though.

Bremerton is a great cheap place to live and work in Seattle, if you don't mind the commute taking like an hour and a half (but an hour where you can kick back and relax on the ferry).

Lmao this picture is SO Seattle. Absolutely beautiful water and great greenery covered by the most dreary sky/cloud cover known to man (except for 3-4 beautiful months in summer which are the best).

For sushi afficionados, there are 2 new sushis please in Seattle that are probably top 5 in the US.

Sushi Kashiba by Jiro's apprentice, Shiro.

And Wataru by Jiro's apparentice, Kumita.

Prices are really cheap for omakase since they're new. $80 for 20 pieces. Kumita is the only chef at Wataru.

Kappo Tamura, by one of Shiro's apprentices, is amazing if you haven't been.

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread. My wife and I are planning to move to the area in about a year. I'm excited, but it's a huge move (2,500 miles).

Clearly you have never been to Tipsy Cow. Fantastic burgers on the eastside

Or Katsu Burger. Japanese-style burgers with things like Japanese mayo (extra eggs,) wasabi mayo (omg yum) and all kinds of other shit that gets weirder. One in Georgetown on Marginal. It's DAMN good.

I moved to the are in the summer of 2012 from Connecticut. I love it here. Original lived in SeaTac but recently moved to Des Moines right near the water. Nice area and great Asian food as well as an AMAZING Mexican restaurant I can not get enough of. Also it doesn't rain like everyone thinks it does. It just a lot of light drizzle, except for last summer when it went like 3 months with no rain and was like 90*. any other Q's just ask!!!

Don't let people scare you away from South of Seattle Its got some gang bangers and shootings (one happend right down the road last night) The city has more heroin and meth than you could imagin. I work Security in Downtown and deal with it all day.

I just moved here a couple months ago, saw some mentions of good mexican food places, going to need to check those out, soon.

Haven't really been here long but if you're looking for people to hang out with when you get here, OP, shoot me a PM.

I still remember last year when we almost made the playoffs, and so many people were thinking 2015 was our chance. Couldn't believe like they did, it just hurts too much.

Maybe next decade.

Nah, team is coming together great.

I hated seeing all of the Spring Training shit trying to give us the pennant this year, hope the cycle doesn't repeat, and that the team is just a good solid team that can make the playoffs year after year and maybe win a series before I die :(

Love the Bremerton to Seattle ferry, though the last time I took it the fog was so thick you couldn't see anything at all.

Yeah the ferry is nice. During Summer it's like a luxury. Bremerton is a great option for those who can afford the bit of extra time to commute. I have a lot of friends who live there for that reason.

Name? I'm not too far from des moines.

That's the dream ain't it. Our team does got talent, but it feels like we just never have what it takes to make it in the fall. I see teams and fanbases aiming for making the fall classic, I just wanna be in the rush for once. :(

I work in TV news currently in El Paso, right next to Juarez, Mexico, which is the setting of Sicario if anyone saw that movie. That's nothing new to me, unfortunately.

Uneedaburger, Elysian, etc. There are a ton of great burgers here.

Don't worry brother, I went through the same thing as an Astros fan. As a fan of both these past couple of years have been rough, but there's some hope. The major issue is that the division is a lot harder with the Rangers upgrading their entire team last year and the Astros having stopped being a dumpster fire.

Weird that I was looking forward to rooting for the Mariners before moving here, but now the mlb fucked over that plan so now the Mariners are in the same division. It goes:'root for Mariners except when they play the Astros'.

Back in November when I still used my car to commute I took a timelapse of the ferry's latter leg to Seattle. It's a good skyline when the sun is out.

Also Seattle has a lot to thank Paul Allen for and I wish he owned the M's. He is a good owner for the Seahawks, he runs this museum for old (OLD) computers called the Living Computer Museum, he founded the EMP, he owns the best theater in Seattle (which I am going to tonight to finally see Star Wars with family). He does it because he likes cool shit. None of this stuff is profitable except the Seahawks.

Man so much praise for Seattle, does anyone not like it? My wife's family lives in Tacoma and while the weather is quite amazing (we only come in summer) it didn't really win me over as much. It is gorgeous, pretty, lots to do but I love my sunshine. We just went in July and there was a drought going on so everything was burnt up. Downtown Seattle is neat but I just love the east coast where I can travel to many cities and places so easily in a car. Rent isn't for me either, love having a house.

Anyhow it is a wonderful place to visit. I wouldn't rule out me moving there though, it could happen one day.

I live here. I moved here from Oklahoma after getting hired here. I work for a TV network.

I am not a city person so personally I really don't like living here. I am a rural person. I like the suburbs around here, especially north of Seattle, but I live downtown so I can walk to work and not deal with the traffic. I think most of my frustration has more to do with living downtown instead of the city itself. I feel trapped, because there is traffic all the time.

I drive 15 minutes south to a Wal Mart Renton to do grocery shopping. Everything within the city limits is fucking expensive.

I don't drink, so I am not really about the bar scene. I don't eat out, I cook all my food to save money, so I am not about the restaurant scene. I am a conservative, so I am not about the political scene. I am a rural country boy so its been tough. If you like those 3 things this city is definately for you.

The one thing I do like here is the outdoors. I am an outdoor person and enjoy fishing, kayaking, skiing, and the like. I also love seafood so I will buy fresh seafood from the markets and cook it.

The one thing that sticks out to me is how there are homeless people everywhere. I walk to work everyday and they are just many in number. You find them sleeping in the middle of sidewalks or at the entrance of a building. For the most part they leave you alone but I have been screamed at and followed for not giving some of them money.

You will see people just go #1 or #2 in the middle of the sidewalk or the street. The streets are dirty and trash is everywhere, at least in the area my office is. It's disgusting.

Parts of downtown are definitely gross. There's some sub-rural places with decent access to the East Side but your commute would be terrible going into downtown Seattle.

Yeah I bit the bullet and live downtown because I'd rather pay more for rent and walk to work than deal with that commute every day.

I see that the OP is moving out here to work for TV, that's the same reason I moved here. I got hired at a network from a smaller market. Increase in pay but a lot of my pay increase was swallowed by the much higher cost of living. But its working for a large market on my resume so the idea is to work here a few years, get the experience then move to a place with a lower cost of living but with a pay increase.

I spent nearly 20 years of my life in Bumfuck, Georgia, so I can relate. Luckily, I like the city, and don't mind the higher living costs since I won't NEED a car (though I'll eventually get one to do outdoorsy stuff on weekends). In addition, I'll put it this way, even after blowing a big chunk of my income on rent and utilities, I should still have more to spend left over than I take home in the entirety of one month right now.

BTW, the grocery thing will be partially solved by Amazon Prime Now for me.

Like you, I reasoned it's easier to go from market 14 down to 30 or whatever than it is to do the opposite, so if I hate it, it's not the end of the world. As it stands, I'm jumping from market 92 to 14, so I had to take it.

And like I said, I'll probably be looking for a new place to split with a roommate come March, which would lessen the cost of living by a few hundred bucks monthly. Keep in touch, we already have work and GAF in common, so who knows.

Well, one of its most famous landmarks is a giant syringe.

I don't think this is even remotely true.
