LOST 06.17/18/18.5: "The End" (Everything Else Was Just Progress)

I'm gonna pretend everyone died in the crash. Because that's the only way I can accept this ending. If they had made that the ending it would have been a huge cop out, but it would have been a better ending. The finale completely failed on it's "All questions answered" promise, I have just as many if not more questions now then I did before I watched it. I did go "Aw fuck" at the "Christian Shephard" part though.

Yeah, Sun and Locke at Hospital on same day no longer matters.

Just like the Police. Desmond doesn't even have to go "fuck em"

They don't matter.

So the fuck what, run over some more cripples!

Most underrated emotional scene?

Jack and Kate's farewell to each other, where she asks him to say she'll see him again, and he simply can't, and they tell each other they love each other. Brilliant.

Maybe it's because Jack is my favorite on the show (in fact he's my most enjoyed television character ever portrayed) or that I've had to in my life say goodbye to a woman like that, but that scene was simply destroying for me.

I will miss this show so much, and I'm so happy this last episode also ended up being it's best.

Just finished it. Sobbed uncontrollably starting at Christian appearing for Jack through the end. That ending was a fucking gift, a beautiful present neatly wrapped and ribbonned for this fan here. I don't feel like I was smacked in the face with answers, but at the same time I feel that they inadvertently cleared up most of the bigger questions I had going into the show to begin with. Everything else is a great detail in comparison and I'm glad that they didn't waste their 2.5 hours going "okay, this is what that was" and so on.

The battle sequence between Jack and the Man in Black was absolutely fucking incredible. The scenery, Giacchino, Bender's direction-- it felt like a great, epic battle scene from any great film. Extra kudos to them for actually having Jack getting stabbed, and showing the knife trying to slowly cut his throat open. That shit was fucking raw and unexpected. Jack and Kate's kiss and farewell was pitch-perfect and satisfying. Every "awakening" sequence was phenomenal, particularly Charlie and Claire. Wow. I kind of wish that Hurley and Charlie had a better scene of them remembering one another, but Garcia's shit eating grin was fine I suppose.

I have several solid ideas about what I think the island ultimately was, and before the finale I couldn't have formed those ideas at all. When I first started watching the show, the biggest mystery for me was simply what the island was. Learning about its past and seeing what the characters who stumble upon the island was all fine and dandy and not every bit of it needed to be cleared up, but the finale gave me just enough to say, okay, I'm pretty sure I understand what the island is. What I haven't quite figured out exactly is what happened at the end but I'm okay with that as I fully plan on watching the entire series again when its released together on Blu-ray.

I'll have more later, but that was absolutely god damned amazing.
Yep ;_; :)

looks like the facebook/hulu crowd is finally watching the finale. FB is lighting up with status updates right now.

Lots of people totally confused, others just paying tribute.

I made my profile pic that awesome Lapidus pic. :D

"We've been waiting for you"

While I think its easier to just think of it as purgatory, I considered something different too...

Observe this: http://arxiv.org/html/physics/0107050
"The Relationship between the General Theory of Relativity and Quantum Theory: How they combine to form a Complete View of the Universe"

In particular this quote:

Where the General Theory of Relativity ends, Quantum Theory begins. Quantum theory tells us that particle B can reside in two places at once.

I think that jughead and the spatially distorting electromagnetic properties of the island allowed Oceanic Flight 815 to both crash and land safely at LA X.

A parallel universe came to exist as a direct consequence of events. While there now appeared to be two versions of each character, they were in fact connected -- you may have heard of the idea that you can spin a paired/entangled particle in one place ... and its counterpart -no matter how far apart- will exude the same behaviour...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_entanglement

...well what if the two Universes were linked in something of a similar way?

In The Constant Eloise Hawking shows prescient knowledge of when a man with red sneakers is about to die. When Desmond quizzes her as to why she didn't prevent it, she states that the Universe has a way of course-correcting, and adjusting to account for errors. That death cannot be avoided.

In the context of the show at the time, that clearly tied in to Desmond's desire to save Charlie - which of course he ultimately couldn't. However, what if the same thing applies across this dimensional split - the alternate universes. By creating a parallel reality, the 815 survivors' alter-egos have escaped their pre-destined fates on the original timeline. And so Desmond, once warned of course correction by Eloise, becomes the instrument through which the Universe corrects itself. One by one, he allows each character to 'remember' their other life via flashes before their eyes. While this allows each character a convenient reunion with the loves in their lives, and a chance to reflect on their individual pursuits, failings and successes in those lives -- ultimately -- it also serves as a mechanic by which each character realises they are not at all in the right place. I believe that the other survivors also realised the extent of Jack's sacrifice and wanted to pay their dues by being there for him as he comes to terms with his own end back on the core timeline.

In a way Desmond is both the Grim Reaper and a shepherd herding a flock of lost, wayward sheep.

Once this process of 'awakening' is complete and they are gathered as one, Christian Shepherd made corporeal invites them to rejoin the light of the Universe. The same light that is at the heart of everything: at the heart of man, at the heart of the island, at the heart of all times and dimensions. They are not in a "where", and it isn't a "when". The X dimension is course corrected - Jack has saved existence, died alone so that they can live together -- and together they depart to rejoin the cosmos. As Jacob once said to Ben, they always had a choice, but this much at least, was always destined. FATE.

Heh, not quite. The show might be over but my interest in it keeps spiking with every passing moment :lol

I wash my hands of the whole thing.

I just wish I could punch Lindelcuse in the face for wasting my fucking time.

Was it really advertised as if they were going to ask all the questions?

Are you sure that wasn't just fans saying what they wanted?

Anyway, them dying in the crash would have been really bad. The one we got was a lot better. And cool.

Not sure if posted, but an insider's (someone from Bad Robot) opinion on the finale. Good read.

The Island:

It was real. Everything that happened on the island that we saw throughout the 6 seasons was real. Forget the final image of the plane crash, it was put in purposely to f*&k with people's heads and show how far the show had come. They really crashed. They really survived. They really discovered Dharma and the Others. The Island keeps the balance of good and evil in the world. It always has and always will perform that role. And the Island will always need a "Protector". Jacob wasn't the first, Hurley won't be the last. However, Jacob had to deal with a malevolent force (MIB) that his mother, nor Hurley had to deal with. He created the devil and had to find a way to kill him -- even though the rules prevented him from actually doing so.

Oh, I have all 5 seasons on BR right now...and I'm curious exactly HOW MUHC extra shit will be in the gigantor boxset.

As much as I want it, if they haven't updated the old seasons disks and everything new will be in the season 6 disk, I may not upgrade.

I hope they announce it soon, if I'm going to sell my BR's I'd rather do it earlier than later.

The finale didn't fail in that promise, the season did. The finale couldn't have been mythology-based IMO. That's what episodes like "across the sea" were for, which they somewhat fucked up.:lol

Looking at the last blip of the last scene on youtube, and it's like a scattershot of the great themes. I can hear Parting Words, Life and Death, and TNPLH.

I think I remember some A Touching Moment/Flying High(top 3 theme imo) in there, too.

Incorrect. Last line in the show belongs to Vincent: 'Ruff Ruffff'. The deep and important meaning of his words will remain the biggest mystery of all.

"You were special, John. And I wasnt"
Top five scenes in "The End".

I loved the way how John looks and smiles like the Locke we all love. Especialy after Ben said he was sorry. "I forgive you Ben".

For those that wonder -- the original ending started the moment Jack walked into the church and touches the casket to Jack closing his eyes as the other plane flies away. That was always JJ's ending. And they kept it.

Wow.

Can anyone clear up the ONLY issue I had with the entire finale. Why does Vincent go and chill with the dying Jack? Did Flocke kill R&B? Was Vincent just out for a walk (on his own, without either of his new masters) and ran across Jack? Please, theories here.

Reading through this thread, i'm surprised people actually think the "purgatory" angle made seasons 1-5 irrelevant, when that goes completely against one of the themes that was going on in that finale.:lol the beauty of the finale i found was it didn't make anything that happened pointless, which what i feared when the alt-flashsideways were introduced.

Been thinking about this episode since I watched it. I really can't believe how good it was. Only thing I don't understand is how did Penny die.

Wait, what is the Sun/Jin and Locke hospital plothole?

People were counting the days that Jin/Sun arrived at the hospital (seemed like the day after the crash since they were sexting) and Locke went to work, lost his job, went to the temp agency, etc. before getting run over.

It didn't add up.

Now, who gives a fuck? PURGATORY BITCHES.

Does anyone know when the Season 6 Soundtrack might be released? I really loved the music from this episode.

Damn.

Wait, what is the Sun/Jin and Locke hospital plothole?
Sun and Jin go to the hospital in something like 1-2 days after landing. Locke becomes a teacher and stuff for a week, then goes to the hospital. But they're both wheeled in at the same time. Now we can see it was all due to the nature of the purgatory.

You got that right, parner! Terry has the way of pulling a smile with a certain twinkle in his eye when playing OG Locke that automatically elevates any scene 10 notches.

He was made, not born

So what? People who are made into killing by whatever and keep doing it over and over again without remorse isn't bad period? Doesn't matter if you were born bad or not :lol .

Wow.

It's a bit wobbly though since Desmond and Penny are there.

I love how at the end, there ultimately were no truly evil characters, nor any truly good ones. LOST: shades of grey, baby!
I'd say hurley was as close to pure good as we got which makes it more fitting that he is the one to protect the island

Vincent goes wherever he wants to go, cause you can't tell him what he can't do.

Well one could infer that characters like (but not exactly) Desmond/Penny/Libby were all part of the plan. Ben was a happy accident in the casting department.

9/10

Dharma was originally brought in to be good. But was turned bad by MIB's corruption and eventually destroyed by his pawn Ben. Now, was Dharma only brought there to help Jack and the other Canditates on their overall quest to kill Smokey? Or did Jacob have another list of Canidates from the Dharma group that we were never aware of? That's a question that is purposley not answered because whatever answer the writers came up with would be worse than the one you come up with for yourself. Still ... Dharma's purpose is not "pointless" or even vague. Hell, it's pretty blantent.
Hehe

Solo said:

Sun and Jin go to the hospital like 2 days max after the plane lands

Thats not enough time for the Locke substitue story to happen, based on what is said in the episode

In the end it didn't matter as time was relative in this timeline.

True Blood has a tiny spark of the magic that Lost had - at least for me.

Pretty decent mix of mythology and character development.

Awful show. Go with The Vampire diaries if you want vampires, atleast that show has Boone!
